1 RED HAT JBOSS FUSE SERVICE WORKS 6 COMPARED WITH ORACLE SOA SUITE COMPETITIVE REVIEW, APRIL 2014 INTRODUCTION The ability to integrate systems and share data across the enterprise is a common datacenter need that varies in complexity. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works is best used for integration projects using service oriented architecture (SOA) principals. These types of implementations can benefit from additional capabilities that compliment SOA principals, such as orchestration and governance. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works expands the integration and enterprise service bus (ESB) capabilities found in Red Hat JBoss Fuse. Oracle offers the Oracle Service Bus or Oracle SOA Suite for SOA-based projects. This document compares prices and functionality for Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works 6 and Oracle SOA Suite for Oracle Middleware as a WebLogic Suite option. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works is a middleware platform with the technical capabilities to support demanding integration solutions. And the subscription price fits the budget constraints of many integration projects. THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGY FOR THE RIGHT JOB Middleware integration solution requirements often vary greatly and can influence the technology used for implementation. Some solutions demand centralized, large-scale service oriented architectures (SOA) that integrate systems using reliable, high-performance networks. Others require the ability to handle data loads efficiently using distributed deployments with more enterprise application integration (EAI) than SOA integration patterns. For such use cases, Red Hat recommends Red Hat JBoss Fuse. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works is best used for integration projects applying SOA principals. It has the technology required to meet demanding integration user cases and is available in 16- and 64-core entitlement increments. Subscriptions can be renewed annually or on a discounted, 3-year plan. With Red Hat JBoss Middleware, you pay an annual subscription fee and are never charged software licensing fees. Oracle offers Oracle SOA Suite for SOA integration use cases. Customers can acquire Oracle SOA Suite 3 different ways: 1. As a WebLogic Suite option 2. 2 Regardless of how you acquire the product, software license and support costs apply. The combined license and support costs are different depending on which acquisition option you choose. There are also license and functional differences depending on the Oracle licensing option you choose. For example: Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 Certification Matrix indicates that if you use Oracle SOA Suite for non-oracle middleware with IBM WebSphere, the following functionality is not supported: Oracle B2B Oracle Reports Oracle Forms Oracle Service Bus Oracle Web Tier (Oracle HTTP Server, Web Cache) Oracle Complex Event Processing 2 Oracle SOA Suite for Oracle Middleware for Oracle Applications may be used only to enable integration, business processes, workflow interactions and approvals within eligible Oracle Applications. 3 Over 2-years, a 16-core, Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works subscription is more than $1M less expensive than the comparable Oracle SOA Suite offering at list price it s just 7.37% of the Oracle cost. COST COMPARISON There is a significant difference in the total acquisition cost of Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works, when compared with Oracle SOA Suite. While Red Hat believes that price alone does not usually drive purchase decisions, the economic advantage of choosing Red Hat over Oracle is so significant that it shouldn t be overlooked. With an Oracle Fusion Middleware purchase, there are 2 charges in the first year: one for software licensing and another for software update license and support fees 4. In subsequent years, the Oracle renewal price for software update license and support is based on fees paid in the prior year, increased by the Inflationary Adjustment Rate (IAR). 3 A Red Hat subscription is very economical when compared with Oracle Fusion Middleware. For example, compare the 2-year list price acquisition costs of Oracle SOA Suite to Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works, when deployed on 16 cores of Intel-based servers. For Oracle, the Intel cores are rated at a core factor of.5 per core. 5 The price comparison is based on 2 years of costs (at current list prices) for both Red Hat JBoss Middleware 6 and Oracle 7. For Oracle, the price list dated Feb. 13, 2014, is used. First-year Oracle license costs for each product are calculated by multiplying 16 (cores) X.5 (core factor) X [product price]. Second-year Oracle software update license and support fees are calculated at 22% of license cost 8. 5 A Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works subscription includes everything you need to run the platform. PRODUCT SIMILARITIES The following subsections highlight similarities between Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and Oracle SOA Suite. This is not an exhaustive list of all similarities. However, it does represent significant points that Red Hat commonly discusses with customers. RUNTIME PLATFORM Both Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and all of the Oracle SOA Suite components (with the exception of complex events) run on a Java application platform. 10 Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works runs on Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform version Oracle SOA Suite runs on WebLogic Server and However, based on Oracle s public technology commercial price list, you must use the Oracle WebLogic Server that is contained in the WebLogic Suite to run SOA Suite. 12 It is 80% more expensive to license and purchase annual support for Oracle WebLogic Suite than it is for Oracle WebLogic Server Enterprise Edition. 13 SERVICE COMPONENT ARCHITECTURE (SCA) SUPPORT Both Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and Oracle SOA Suite heavily rely on SCA to develop integration solutions. SCA provides a standards-based approach to defining the components in a service base solution, using existing services as references, and making the assembly accessible via service bindings. A Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works subscription includes SCA support, integration flows, governance, a business rules engine, complex event processing, BPEL engine, and messaging, along with operations administration and management tools. All of the functionality included with Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works can be included in an SCA composite. However, Oracle SOA Suite does not allow all components included in the product to be embedded in SCA composites. For example, Oracle Service Bus proxy services cannot be included directly within a SOA composite. Instead, Oracle SOA Suite provides a direct binding framework that lets you expose Oracle SOA Suite service components in a composite application, and the Oracle Service Bus SOA-DIRECT transport interacts with those exposed services through the SOA direct binding framework, letting those service components interact in the service bus layer and leverage the capabilities and features of Oracle Service Bus. 14 RICH SET OF INCLUDED FUNCTIONALITY Both Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and Oracle SOA Suite include a rich set of functionality that can be used by developers. 6 In addition, Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works offers support for Camel, and BPMN 2.0 (business process model and notation) support that is missing from Oracle SOA Suite. Oracle provides BPMN 2.0 capabilities with the Oracle Unified Business Process Management Suite, which is licensed separately from SOA Suite. However, Oracle SOA Suite does not provide an SCA component to include BPMN process flows within an SCA composite. 15 INTEGRATION PROTOCOL SUPPORT Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works provides multiple adapters for developers to use when connecting with external systems. When creating SCA composites within JBoss Developer Studio, there are 17 bindings graphically available to provide access to the composite, or access an external system via a reference. Some of the adapters include: REST SOAP File JMS Netty You can also use the Camel binding to access Camel components which expand your connectivity options even further. There are over 125 different Camel components supported by Red Hat JBoss Fuse that can be used for connectivity to integration endpoints. 16 If needed, Apache Camel documentation details how to write custom components. 17 You may also be able to find a Camel component provided by a third party that you could use as an alternative to writing a custom component. Red Hat JBoss Fuse is included in Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works. All adapters and components you use with Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works can be used in development, testing, production, or any other environment you deploy to, within the limits of your subscription. Oracle SOA Suite also includes multiple adapters for connectivity. Both Oracle and Red Hat provide file, FTP, JMS, SOAP, and REST connectivity. Oracle technology adapters are licensed via the WebLogic Suite license and are also included in SOA Suite for Non Oracle Middleware. 7 MESSAGE ROUTING As messages are received and processed, and data is potentially shared with enterprise systems, there is a common need to perform message routing. Often, the routing is based on message content but can be based on other factors. For example, a request for internal product information is routed to internal fulfillment systems, while requests for OEM product information is routed to specific partners. Red Hat JBoss Service Works primarily relies on Camel services for message routing. Camel services allow you to use the core routing engine of Apache Camel to route between services within an SCA composite. Camel endpoints function as protocol adapters, exposing services hosted in an SCA composite to the outside world and allowing external services to be invoked from within the composite. You can define Camel routes using Java DSL or XML and deploy them within Red Hat JBoss Service Works to handle pipeline orchestration between composite services. With Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Service Bus is used as a service intermediary in an enterprise IT SOA landscape. 19 Within Oracle Service Bus, routing logic pertaining to communications with a service endpoint is handled with configured proxy services. Proxy service development is performed using Oracle proprietary technology. There is no open standard such as Camel used by the Oracle Service Bus. It is also important to keep in mind that Oracle Service Bus proxy services cannot be embedded in SOA Suite SCA composite. The Oracle Service Bus must call a deployed SCA composite or be called by the composite using one of the provided Oracle transports. PROTOCOL SWITCHING Both Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and Oracle SOA Suite support protocol switching within deployed services. A deployed service may provide an accessible endpoint using one or more protocols. Once the service starts to process a message, it may call one or more external systems using the same or different protocols. Red Hat JBoss Service Works provides protocol switching within the services of a defined SCA composite. There is no need to rely on a separately deployed process to handle protocol switching. Oracle SOA Suite provides multiple locations where developers can implement protocol switching. The Oracle Service Bus is commonly used as the endpoint to access deployed SOA services via a proxy service. Within the Oracle Service Bus, developers can make calls to other systems, including deployed SOA Suite SCA composites. Oracle SOA Suite SCA components such as the BPEL engine and mediator can access SCA references which can be used for protocol switching. 8 Get comprehensive Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works functionality from a single subscription. It is debatable if the ability to perform protocol switching in multiple places in and out of the context of an SCA composite is a positive or a negative. However, since Oracle Service Bus is not an SCA service component, Oracle is unable to provide protocol switching between all SOA Suite technologies within the scope of an SCA composite. This can lead to inconsistent use of the SOA Suite by developers. This approach also dictates that at least two products must be deployed and administered, which increases complexity. COMPARATIVE DIFFERENCES The following subsections highlight competitive differences between Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works and Oracle SOA Suite. It is not an exhaustive list of all differences. However, it does represent significant points that Red Hat commonly discusses with customers. PRODUCT ACQUISITION Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works development can be performed with the same development tool used for all other Red Hat middleware. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works functionality is available in a single platform bundle. Managed premium support subscriptions are available in 1- and 3-year terms with either 16 or 64 cores. There are no product feature usage restrictions associated with an installation covered by a subscription. Oracle offers the option to acquire the Oracle SOA Suite three ways. First, as a WebLogic Suite option, second as an option for use with non Oracle middleware, and third as a middleware option for Oracle applications. 20 DEVELOPER TOOLING Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works includes Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio for drag-and-drop and code level integration development. JBoss Developer Studio can be used to configure all Red Hat middleware platforms. 21 The drag-and-drop feature in Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works is easy to use, letting developers deliver solutions faster, which can result in lower costs. Oracle SOA Suite development is performed using multiple tools, which can increase developer complexity, lengthen the developer learning curve, and make it challenging to keep all development assets synchronized. For example, the following tools are associated with Oracle Service Bus development activities: 22 XQuery mapper tool is used to transform data between XML, non-xml, and Java data types. It can be used only with the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse. Format builder tool is used for non-xml data (binary) and runs independently of all other tools. Web-based Oracle SOA Suite Administration Console provides design tools and runtime activities such as monitoring. It must be run from an Oracle WebLogic Server instance to use. Oracle SOA Suite plug-ins for Eclipse are for design time activities such as configuring services and other service bus resources. 9 Development for Oracle SOA Suite components, SOA Composite Assembly, BPEL PM, Mediator, Human Task, Business Rules, and adapters are performed using the Oracle SOA Composite Editor extension for Oracle JDeveloper. 23 Oracle developers need to learn what development tools must be used for each SOA Suite component. They also need to learn about the differences in building, deploying, debugging, and other aspects of the development life cycle. For example, the process for deployment, testing, and debugging Oracle Service Bus and Oracle Event Processing artifacts is different from other Oracle SOA Suite components such as business rules and BPEL. DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE JBoss Developer Studio can be used for all Red Hat middleware development, including Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works developers can choose to work with a graphical editor, work directly with XML files, or switch between graphical and direct XML editing. The developer chooses the method that makes them the most comfortable and productive. Using JBoss Developer Studio, developers can also choose to develop for Camel directly in Java classes. Oracle SOA Suite development is performed using multiple tools that vary based on the activity being performed. Most of these tools require users to work strictly within visual editors. For example, message flow development must always be performed visually. Oracle documentation specifically warns against directly editing 11 types of resources: Do not manually edit resource files as text or XML files. This can result in unpredictable behavior. 24 However, in other cases, manual steps may be required. Oracle Fusion Middleware documentation contains 135 mentions of the word manual associated with application development topics. Some are very important to developer success, for example:... security headers that are appended to a message, or the headers for a Mediator that are created using an abstract WSDL file. 10 Building integrations using patterns can be faster than trying to start from scratch each time. BUILDING INTEGRATIONS USING PATTERNS Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works allows you to use Apache Camel as a service component. Camel is open source and includes out-of-the-box, standards-based integration patterns based on the book Enterprise Integration Patterns by Gregor Hohpe and Bobby Woolf. 26 For many, enterprise integration patterns are the de facto standard for discussing enterprise integration. Forty-five different patterns are supported out-of-the-box and are broken down into the following categories: Messaging systems (6 patterns) Messaging channels (5 patterns) Message construction (2 patterns) Message routing (15 patterns) Message transformation (5 patterns) Messaging endpoints (11 patterns) System management (1 pattern) The Oracle Service Bus component of Oracle SOA Suite does not offer a development environment with pre-built integration patterns or templates that can be used to address recurring integration patterns and speed development. EMBEDDED JAVA DEPLOYMENT You can embed Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works composites directly into Java applications. This allows you to simplify tasks like posting or retrieving data as well as transforming the data to or from a Java class instance for use with your application. With this capability, you do not need to deploy the composite to a server in order to use it. This capability can increase the productivity of a Java developer who otherwise would need to implement custom code to replicate the capabilities already found in Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works. Oracle Service Bus does not provide the ability to embed functionality directly into a Java application. Instead, Java applications must connect to the Oracle Service Bus using one of the supported transports to use deployed proxy services. This increases the deployment topology of Java applications accessing functionality deployed on the Oracle Service Bus. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works developers can test locally and avoid testing on shared servers where artifact and potential concurrency issues can cause trouble. LOCAL DEVELOPER UNIT TESTING Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works gives developers the ability to test their work using a JUnitbased test framework. By annotating Java code, developers start an embedded Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works runtime for each JUnit test method. Additional testing functionality is provided with MixIns. MixIns provide customized testing tools for service implementations, gateway bindings, and transformers. For example the BPMMixIn provides utility methods for working with BPM Human Tasks such as starting and stopping a TaskServer. All Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works testing can be performed directly from JBoss Developer Studio or via the command line when performing a maven build. 11 Oracle SOA Suite testing is always performed after a SOA composite application has been deployed. This can be done manually with the Oracle Enterprise Manager Fusion Middleware Control or automated via ant, using the composite test framework. If you have licensed Oracle SOA Suite for use by each developer, and the developer s machine has the computing resources to run SOA Suite, then local testing may be done. Otherwise, testing will need to be performed on a server shared by multiple developers. Such an environment could introduce concurrency issues where developer artifacts and potentially test data can overlap. In addition, Oracle Service Bus testing is performed separately from SOA Suite SCA composite testing. DEVELOPER ACCESS TO ADDITIONAL MIDDLEWARE With your Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works subscription, you get development rights to all Red Hat JBoss Middleware platforms. Specifically, for every 16 cores of a Red Hat JBoss Middleware subscription, 25 developers gain rights as developers for all Red Hat JBoss Middleware platforms. As a result, developers can easily explore how Red Hat middleware platforms such as Red Hat Data Virtualization, Red Hat JBoss Data Grid, and others complement Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works. Unlike a Red Hat middleware subscription, an Oracle SOA Suite license does not entitle developers access to other Oracle products. For such access, developers must adhere to the terms of the OTN Free Developer License Agreement 27 or license the software for development and testing. For those who choose to initially develop under the OTN Free Developer License Agreement associated with Oracle Service Bus, be aware that, per Oracle, you may not... continue to develop your application after you have used it for any internal data processing, commercial or production purpose without securing an appropriate license from us, or an Oracle reseller[.] 28 Therefore, if you successfully deploy Oracle SOA Suite (or any Oracle middleware) into production, you must properly license your developers for future development. This requirement must be repeated for each new piece of Oracle middleware you deploy into production. 29 CONCLUSION This competitive review has presented a high-level comparison between Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works 6 and Oracle SOA Suite There are many features that both products have in common, which allows them to be used to implement use cases. For example, both use SCA for a service assembly framework but only Red Hat JBoss Fuse allows users to directly embed service meditations and BPMN-based processes within a composite. And only Red Hat JBoss Service works lets you develop solutions using a single integration development environment. You get the full functionality of Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works without any associated software licenses fees. With Red Hat, you simply purchase subscriptions for the technologies you use. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Service Works costs just 7.37% of the Oracle solution s price. The cost savings you realize by choosing Red Hat can enable you to start more projects, deploy technology more pervasively within the enterprise, and apply more of your budget towards innovation.
