With comprehensive development tools to help create, deploy and maintain traditional enterprise and composite applications, Rational Developer for System z enables developers with different technical backgrounds to easily participate in important technology projects. Improve productivity with IBM development technology throughout your enterprise Built on Eclipse open source technology and written to Java EE specifications, Rational Developer for System z is designed to optimize and simplify
application development for traditional processes. Employing the common services of an integrated development infrastructure, it helps facilitate reuse, better management and improved communication. It also helps reduce requirements for manual integration ultimately driving a shorter development process. Eclipse plug-in technology allows you to integrate complementary development tools to extend the functionality of the total platform so you can interoperate with other Eclipse technology-based products. Rational Developer for System z has key capabilities for application development including: CICS, IMS, DB2, Batch, and UNIX System Services development and maintenance tools Integrated life-cycle development with IBM Rational ClearCase version control support, the IBM Software Configuration and Library Management (SCLM) Developer Toolkit; browse and update VSAM dataset content on System z using IBM File Manager integration; Fault Analyzer integration accesses problem reports for diagnosing mainframe application faults Enterprise Service Tools that assist a System z Web service developer in creating a CICS Web service; creating an IMS SOAP Gateway Web service; creating a Web service that is not runtimespecific; use the System z Database Application Generator to create a COBOL CICS application that accesses a z/os DB2 database CICS Service Flow Feature allows transformation of a CICS application to a Web service, or to integrate an existing CICS application into a Web service. The service flow specific project can also be driven by MQ Messages and CICS Transaction Gateway. To run the service-flow project, you must have the CICS service-flow feature installed, which in turn requires CICS TS, Version 3.1 or 3.2 software. Develop, maintain and reuse traditional application processes You can continue to leverage your traditional applications and processes as part of your SOA and still meet your quality-of-service requirements. Rational Developer for System z provides an interactive workstation-based environment to help develop, maintain and reuse COBOL, PL/I, C/C++, CICS, IMS and batch applications for traditional processing or for inclusion in an SOA. Version 7.5 release of Rational Developer for System z offers new features and capabilities including: System configuration and performance Increased performance and decreased resource requirements on both the client and the host by as much as 50%. The host installation and configuration process is faster to install, configure or upgrade the product. Core z/os development Create manageable groups of build/ syntax check properties with Property Groups. Support for alternate include syntax in COBOL and PL/I. A new API allows for local syntax check pre-processors that can be called from a local syntax check operation. The Show dependencies function is now available from local and remote projects. Compare view now allows updates to the content being compared. New code generation options are included to generate data access logic to structured data in QSAM/VSAM files. 2
Next-generation COBOL development environment Syntax-check as you type enables you to immediately see syntax errors. A refactoring engine offering wizards to perform code changes with the ability to preview and approve changes. New data-rich code analysis views that include searchable displays series of perform statements. The COBOL editing environment includes new support for copy-replace verbs, HEX editing, simplified ISPF command, and visual indicators. COBOL design and development using UML UML profiles for COBOL applications allow use of these profiles in IBM Rational Software Architect to take generic UML class diagrams and activity diagrams and transform them to COBOL-specific application specifications. Designers can feed UML models into IBM Rational Developer for System z where they can be transformed into COBOL programs, copybooks, data definitions, and application logic. SOA and Web services Enterprise Service Tools usability enhancements to simplify and improve Web service development including updated wizards to meet in the middle support. Web service creation enhancements including support for IMS PL/I Web services, and XML system Service generation options to offload XML processing to z/os specialty processing engines. Integrated CICS Explorer and Application Deployment Manager tooling Includes an integrated copy of the CICS Explorer, which is enhanced via the RDz Application Deployment Manager (ADM), allowing you to query, define and install needed CICS resources with proper authorization. RDz Enterprise Service Tools integrated with ADM allows you to define and manage CICS application resources if you have the correct permissions that need to be defined for CICS Web services and Service Flows to be deployed and tested. Integrated application life cycle Enhanced support for managing z/os projects with IBM Rational ClearCase. WebSphere Service Registry and Repository (WSRR) support via the WSRR Eclipse plug-in to allow integration with Web service test and production governance systems. Enhanced debugger support including: integration with the LPEX editor; use of the outline view while debugging; content assist while entering debug commands; new Debug Console commands that can be entered in a command file for unattended debugging. File Manager integration enables access to KSDS files from the IBM Rational Developer for System z workbench including: browsing and updating datasets from the workbench; supporting template-driven display of VSAM, PDS Member, and Sequential File data; supporting large dataset display and edit; support for File Manager template editing from the workstation. Fault Analyzer integration allows users to: browse Fault Analyzer ABEND reports on CICS, IMS, Batch, Java, WebSphere; view dump selections relating to ABENDs; annotate reports to share comments; use split-screen mode in the dump analyzer; reference the same editor sessions used for code editing instead of module sidefiles. The preceding new and enhanced features of Rational Developer for System z are in addition to an already comprehensive set of rich features. For the V7.5 release, IBM Rational Developer for System z offers two new product 3
packaging choices, each with the features already described, but with additional development support for greater choice and flexibility: IBM Rational Developer for System z with Java provides a unified development environment for heterogeneous enterprise application development with workload spanning System z runtimes such as CICS, IMS, DB2, and Batch to front-end Java Enterprise Edition workloads running on WebSphere Application Server. RDz with Java includes tools for building the underlying business process and infrastructure for Web applications. These tools support the popular, open source JavaServer Faces (JSF) and Struts run times. They also include a visual construction environment that allows developers to quickly link views implemented as HTML and JavaServer Pages (JSP ) with business logic implemented with different technologies, such as Web services, Java EE Connector Architecture (JCA) adapters, COBOL, PL/I and C/C++. IBM Rational Developer for System z with EGL provides a unified development environment for modern System z application development connecting traditional System z applications in COBOL, PL/I, C/C++, or high level assembler on CICS, IMS, DB2, and Batch to Web and Web frontend applications written using EGL (IBM s newest business language). EGL helps to increase developer productivity while delivering integrated high-quality code faster yet working within the organization s development processes, tools, and philosophy. EGL to build Rich Web 2.0 applications As part of the IBM Rational Developer for System z with EGL, a fully supported and enhanced implementation of the EGL Rich UI technology is expected to be delivered in fourth quarter With it, users will be able to gain access to this technology via the included license of IBM Rational Business Developer. This capability provides the tools to build rich Web 2.0-style applications in which the presentation logic runs in the browser instead of on a traditional Web application server. Data and business logic required by the application are accessed via service calls made from the browser to services running on a server. EGL can be used for developing the UI and UI logic, as well as the services. EGL Rich UI relies on standard Web technologies such as Ajax, HTML, JavaScript, REST and SOAP. Therefore, no additional software is required on the client. Planned features include: Fully integrated, end-to-end development and testing environment for building back-end business logic and services, and front-end rich user interfaces Visual editor for graphically developing user interfaces Rich library of UI widgets, and framework and tools for UI widgets extensibility and widget creation Dynamic publishing and rendering of the application during development Support for asynchronous SOAP or REST service calls Support for popular browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari) on multiple platforms 4
Leveraging with the open and extensible Jazz platform Also in fourth quarter 2008, IBM intends to deliver the client component of the IBM Rational Team Concert for System z in IBM Rational Developer for System z. IBM Rational Team Concert for System z will be based the Jazz platform. IBM Rational Developer for System z client will enable customers to connect to the IBM Rational Team Concert for System z Server, which will provide team collaboration when the server has been purchased and installed on System z.
