WSO2 Platform Offerings for Developers Version 1.1 (February 03, 2014)
Table of Contents Application Development Jaggery for JavaScript-Based Web and REST Style Applications Tooling for Development Deployment and Management of Jaggery Applications with WSO2 Application Server Java Web Applications Web Application Management Services JAX-WS and JAX-RS Support Apache Axis2 and Apache CXF Services Java EE Support Data Services User Engagement Server API Manager and Application Development Developer Studio Applications using Cloud APIs App Factory
Application Development Web applications are mainstream today. They solve the problem of taking data onto screens with value addition in the process. Many infrastructure choices exist when taking data onto screens; however, among these choices, time to market, agility to develop, ease with which to amend and upgrade (i.e. maintainability), extensibility, and testability, are some characteristics to consider when picking development tools and infrastructure. When using the WSO2 platform, development teams can build Java Web applications (which includes some of the JavaEE technologies and Spring related frameworks) and JavaScript Web applications with Jaggery application framework. Among these three technology options, the JavaScript-based approach is of particular importance as that brings in a novel approach to Web applications development with the power of scripting, the familiar language and full-fledged presentation as well as back-end logic support. Jaggery for JavaScript-Based Web and REST Style Applications Jaggery is a framework to write Web applications and HTTP-focused REST style web services. It helps address all aspects of an application: front-end, communication, server-side logic and persistence in pure JavaScript. One of the intents of this framework is to reduce the gap between writing Web applications and Web services, by helping a seamless design where the presentation layer and the REST API layer could be combined into a single application. As a JavaScript server-side scripting engine, Jaggery combines all the strengths of JavaScript with flexibility and freedom at both the development and deployment stages. In a way, it has enabled PHP style application development with JavaScript. Most JavaScript Web application development mechanisms restrict developers to a framework-specific structure or pattern, which demand an additional learning curve. By contrast, with Jaggery, any developer versed in JavaScript would have everything they need to get going. Further, the ability of calling Java classes directly in Jaggery would be another advantage. This was you can plug in the functionality embedded in Java libraries into JavaScript-based Web Applications with ease. Jaggery has a unique and easy to use model when it comes to implementing REST services. Unlike writing the REST service in JAX-RS, you can match URL templates and direct the requests to certain functions in Jaggery. In addition, applying security with basic-auth is quite simple with Jaggery REST applications. Tooling for Development Since Jaggery is about JavaScript, you can use any JavaScript supporting IDE to develop Jaggery applications. However, WSO2 Developer Studio comes with a syntax highlighting editor for Jaggery that makes a Jaggery developer s life still easy in the development process. 3
Deployment and Management of Jaggery Applications with WSO2 Application Server Jaggery applications, once developed, can be deployed onto the WSO2 Application server to manage deployment and DevOps life cycle. You can deploy/undeploy the applications using the management console, monitor the status, activate/deactivate the application, and track the usage stats. Java Web Applications WSO2 has comprehensive support for your Java Web applications. Web components are packaged in Web Application Archives (WAR), which are then deployed in the Application Server. The advantage of using the WSO2 platform is that you get the luxury of being able to manage, monitor, track statistics, such as access information and performance information and be on top of all the DevOps operations of your applications. This result is the systematic application lifecycle management for all your Web applications. You will be able to maintain the application and also migrate and upgrade as deemed necessary with ease with WSO2 Application Server. WSO2 platform APIs to help implement services security Hot-deployment and hot-update for your Web services WSO2 Registry APIs to realize application persistence User-friendly management console for to deploy, monitor stats and state, deactivate, activate, retire Web Application Management All the benefits inherited from OSGI Java component architecture and provisioning capabilities Fine-grained authorization through WSO2 Identity Server features (with standards such as XACML) 4
Web Application Management WSO2 Application Server is a proven platform for Spring, Hibernate and Java MVC frameworks (such as Structs2, Spring-MVC, Wicket, Tapestry) based applications. Application Server also support Groovy frameworks, such as Grails. The rationale for using WSO2 Application Server is that you get the packaged platform features, such as cloud computing multi tenancy, application management with management console dashboards, application monitoring with business activity monitor (BAM), and many more WSO2 platform-related unified application management features. Services The most popular Java APIs for services these days are JAX-WS and JAX-RS. These SOAP-style and REST-style services are supported by WSO2 platform. In addition, Axis2 Services and CXF Services too are supported, based on the most popular Apache projects in the Web services space. The platform supports Data Services, which exposes data sources as Web services. It is a quick, simple, and yet powerful mechanism for taking data onto screens. Mashups (Services with JS) is another popular form of creating Web services using JavaScript as the programming language. Application Server has comprehensive support for WebSockets as well. JAX-WS and JAX-RS Support JAX-WS is the preferred API among majority of Java developers to develop SOAP services, and JAX-RS is the preferred API for REST style services. WSO2 provides complete compliance for both these APIs. The benefits of using the WSO2 platform for implementing these services include: Ability to use the user stores through the WSO2 platform APIs to help implement services security scenarios with ease Ability to use WSO2 Registry APIs through to help realize application and service persistence requirements with ease Fine-grained authorization through WSO2 Identity Server features, such as the use cases for user entitlement (with standards such as XACML) All benefits inherited from OSGi Java component architecture and provisioning capabilities User-friendly management console for Web application management to carry out life cycle management activities, such as deploy, monitor stats and state, deactivate, activate, retire Hot-deployment and hot-update for your Web services The above set of features are in fact applicable to any Java Web Applications that you host with WSO2 Application Server. 5
Apache Axis2 and Apache CXF Services Apache Axis2 and Apache CXF are the most popular Web services projects from Apache Software Foundation. WSO2 platform has comprehensive and first-class support for both these Web services engines and user artifacts based on those Web services engines. Developers can use any tools that they are already familiar with to develop Apache Axis2 or CXF artifacts and then use the WSO2 Application Server for all DevOps related to those applications. Java EE Support WSO2 Application Server provides support for a number of Java EE Web profile-based specifications that are as follows: Servlet 3 Java Server Page (JSP) and Expression Language (EL) Java Server Faces (JSF) Java Persistence API (JPA) Java Transaction API (JTA) WSO2 Application Server uses Apache MyFaces as the JSF reference implementation. JSF-based web applications can run on the libraries provided by the J2EE class loading environment. WSO2 Application Server uses Apache OpenJPA as the persistence provider. Web applications can use the OpenJPA libraries provided by the J2EE class loading environment. JTA support for web applications is inherited from the base WSO2 platform; therefore, JTA comes as an outof-the box feature by inheriting the transaction management capabilities of the platform. Data Services WSO2 Data Services Server rapidly generates services and makes data sources (e.g. RDBMS databases, NoSQL databases, CSV files, Google Spreadsheets) more accessible. WSO2 Data Services Server allows developers to write a simple services descriptor using a graphical tool (or XML) and expose the data sources as services both using SOAP and REST styles within minutes. The Data Services Server comes with the following: Tools to generate services as opposed to create them manually; saves time Effort to implement and fine tune is minimal, could be done with the server s management console alone No code required at all, it requires minimal configuration Comprehensive services security options to secure both SOAP and REST style services Secure vault to help secure the data source access credentials Is cloud computing enabled, based on the WSO2 platform support Transactions management support 6
JNDI Registry Data Service opencsv External Clients Standard Service Data Service Data Access Layer Apache POI G-Doc API WSO2 DS Dorby, MySQL, etc. RDBMS Cassanda, Mongo DB No-SQL The key characteristic of WSO2 Data Services Server is the time it takes to take your services to the market. Rather than writing lines of code, it is astonishing how fast you can bring data stored in various data sources to the screen. User Engagement Server WSO2 User Engagement Server combines the power of Jaggery JavaScript applications with Gadgets to provide developers with a composer to build graphical dashboards and truly dynamic Web applications. The server comes with tools to help users to visually compose the dashboards. This is a very powerful feature especially for non-technical business users where they can create dashboards with zero code. The key differentiator of this approach is the ease with which you can combine the static Web content with dynamic gadgets. Gadgets can be used to build visual information sets to help visualize the data sets that are pulled from back-end services. WSO2 User Engagement Server also helps developers to create micro sites, where Jaggery.js, HTML, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript can be used in combination to create dynamic and agile Web applications in super quick time. Pre-build gadgets are added to an enterprise store along with HTML widgets, so that they can be re-used when creating the dashboards and pages. 7
To help developers with the development and testing process, the server comes equipped with an easyto-use Web IDE. This Web IDE significantly reduces the time to production, and developers can enjoy the power of continuous integration with their updates and upgrades to the applications. API Manager and Application Development WSO2 API Manager appeals to application developers for two reasons: Firstly, you can use the API manager to expose your in-house IT assets as APIs to the outside world. This could be done with proper security, throttling, billing, metering and monitoring capabilities, thanks to the comprehensive architecture of WSO2 API Manager that takes care of all these aspects. The second interesting aspect of API Manager is that the APIs can be used from your web, mobile or desktop applications that you develop. You can use the consumer or application key infrastructure of the API Manager at a click of a button and you are ready to use any API that is published. As an application developer, you can also keep track of usage monitoring data that will help you figure out how to tune and enhance your applications in the future. 8
Developer Studio WSO2 Developer Studio is the Eclipse-based source integrated development environment (IDE) that can be used to develop various application types to be hosted with the WSO2 platform. WSO2 Developer Studio is a complete tooling platform where you can easily develop, deploy, test, and debug your SOA, web and cloud computing applications. Axis2 Service Project WSO2 Carbon Server Carbon Application Project Synapse Configs Carbon Application Project Deploy Sequence Endpoint Proxy Service Local Entry Testing & Debuging WSO2 Cloud PaaS Carbon Application Project BPEL Carbon Application Project Developer Studio allows you to package your artifacts into composite applications and deploy those into WSO2 products such as the Application Server, Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), and Business Process Server (BPS). Applications Using Cloud APIs From the WSO2 ESB release, there is comprehensive support for cloud connectors. A cloud connector allows your message flows to connect to and interact with cloud services APIs, such as Twitter and Salesforce.com. This relieves you from the burden of having to maintain clients stubs of your own. It also takes care of API versioning factors when there are multiple API versions. Cloud connectors from WSO2 will significantly reduce the development time against cloud services, allowing the developers to just focus on the business logic aspects in the implementation. App Factory WSO2 App Factory is a cloud computing-based application development lifecycle management platform. It is a platform on which you can provision application development projects, where the full life cycle of project creation, development, testing, deployment, and DevOps can be managed in a unified manner. 9
Development Issue Occurred -Code completed -Design Review Done -Code Review Done QA Issue Occurred -Smoke Tests Passed -Test Cases Passed Production Retired The App Factory model is designed to help software development teams to stay agile, act flexible, and realize continuous application delivery with ease. The model gets rid of the numerous routine tasks, such as setting up environments, re-configuring those environments, manual build triggers, and manual deployment of artifacts. WSO2 App Factory is the future platform of choice to leverage cloud computing benefits to software applications development. 10
