1 GSF NAV DESCRIPTION GSF NAV is a GPS navigator system that has been developed for all types of mechanized activity. It locates staff in real time on the field and records movements in a track log. It also allows the user to save data. The operator visualizes on the screen a map showing its position as well as all the other geographic data used for the intervention (intervention sectors, lakes, rivers, road network, etc.). Some data preparation is required in order to add the base map to the screen. This application contains tools to define the activation and screenshot parameters of GPS data, zoom tools, distance and area scaling tools as well as functions to import and export data. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

1.1 REGISTERING GSF NAV GSF NAV is protected by a virtual key. Following the installations of the components, it is necessary to register the application by contacting Groupe Système Forêt (GSF) by (info@gsf.ca) or by phone (418) A unique product number of 12 digits will be generated and is specific to the device used, the material components and the version of GSF NAV. It is necessary to furnish this product number for GSF to generate the licence number, which is also composed of 12 digits GSF NAV Versions Three licence levels are available with GSF NAV, which are Basic, Standard and Pro. With the basic licence, it is only possible to import and view data and map. Nothing can be created or edited. All menus are available but not usable. A note is added for each section of this document specifying if it is available in the basic version. The Standard licence requires that the app connect regularly with online services. A Wi-Fi Internet connexion is thus necessary to keep using the app. Data can be created and edited without any limit in this version. All menus are accessible. The Pro licence can be used offline and doesn t need to connect to online services. Data can be created and edited without any limit in this version. All menus are accessible. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

All information regarding the product number, the licence number and, if applicable, the number of days left before authentication can be found in the About window. It can be accessed in the application by pressing the Menu button Changing Licence The licence can be changed in the Settings menu. In the General section, the Version specifies the licence that is actually used by the app. To change it, press the Version button. A warning is displayed saying that GSF NAV must restart to change the version and asks for a confirmation. Pressing Yes will open a new window with a choice of versions. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

Choose the appropriate version and press Continue. The window containing the product number will open and ask for a licence number. Enter the licence number in the appropriate space and Register. GSF NAV is now ready to use. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

2 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR APPLICATION USAGE GSF NAV is a cartographic application simple of use and is presented with an intuitive interface with many buttons and functionalities. It uses the device GPS system for localisation and for registering movements. This chapter contains only general information and requires checking the appropriate chapters for more details. 2.1 CREATING A MAP USING GSF OUTILS FOR ARCGIS The first step is to create two files.nav and.geo using the function «Create Android Project» in GSF Outils. Both files must be transferred to the Cedar device prior to being used by the GSF NAV app. See section 3 on page 17 for more details. 2.2 OPENING A MAP The next step is to open a map with a.nav extension in the GSF NAV app. If no map has ever been opened in the app, or if the previous one has been deleted, the Open window appears automatically, letting the user select a.nav file. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The Open map function in the Menu button gives access to an existing map by pressing its name directly in the Open window if it did not open on the start-up. This function is available for all three licence levels. See section 4 on page 22 for more details. 2.3 CREATING A TRACK LOG Enabling the GPS system only shows real time positioning. Those locations can be stored in a track log using the Tracklog option in the GSF NAV tool bar. The following step is to define the data registering interval using the option Freq : 3s. The default setting for the time lapse is the last one that has been entered. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

To track log can be started by pressing the Tracklog Off option. To stop the recording, the same option, now named Tracklog On, must be pressed again. This function is available for Standard and Pro versions only. See section 8.1 on page 32 for more details. 2.4 CAPTURING GPS DATA Using a GPS system to record field phenomena can be of a great utility. Those phenomena can be registered as points, polylines and polygons using the GPS Capture option. The options that are proposed in this menu will change according to the geometry type (point versus polyline and polygon). Here again, the recording must be defined using the Freq: 3s option. The default time lapse between two recordings is the last frequency that has been entered. To begin the polyline and polygon recordings, the Start button must be pressed. The same button, now named Stop, must be pressed again to finish the recording. A Pause and Resume option is also offered during the data capture. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The data registration is done with a minimum of information. To add more details or edit the data, the Settings menu should be used. This function is available for Standard and Pro versions only. See sections 8.2 on page 33 and 9 on page 40 for more details. 2.5 EXPORTING DATA The last step consists of exporting the registered data using the Export GPX function found in the Menu. Everything is automatically done and a confirmation screen appears when the exportation is done. The.GPX files for Track log, Waypoint, polylines and polygons are created in the Gpx folder on the device SD card. This function is available for Standard and Pro versions only. See section 12 on page 48 for more details. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

3 CREATING A MAP USING GSF OUTILS FOR ARCGIS 3.1 PREPARING A BASE MAP A base map can be made using an ArcMap Project. A regular Arc Map project should be made with the desired layers, such as lakes, streams, road network, elevation contours or any other relevant layers. The symbology and the scale ranges can and should be specified before creating the map. 3.2 CREATING A MAP To create the map, the function Create Android Project from GSF Outils must be used. Select all layers to include on the map, name the project with a proper name and specify the Output folder prior to executing the function. For more details on this function, see GSF Outils manual. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

3.3 TRANSFERRING TO CEDAR DEVICE Before transferring any map or data to the Cedar Device, The GSF NAV app must be open at least once. This will create the necessary folders for the data and map transfers between the computer and the Cedar device. The Cedar device must be connected as a USB storage or Mount SD Card on the computer to make the transfer. See GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

Appendix for more details Transferring Map to Cedar Device To transfer all necessary files in the Cedar device, the folder in which those files were created must be opened using Windows Explorer. Both files having the name of the previously created project must be manually copied onto the Cedar device. They have.nav and.geo extensions. Use the Autoplay Window that appears on the connection of the Cedar Device to open another Windows Explorer window, using the Open folder to view files option. If more than one window has opened, explore both removable disks to find the GsfMaps folder. Select and open the GsfMaps folder. Copy files,.nav and.geo, there. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

3.3.2 Transferring Data to Cedar Device To transfer shapefiles and rasters (images) on the Cedar device, the Transfer GSFNAV data for Cedar device function from GSF Outils must be used. Select the layers (shapefiles) and images (rasters) from the ArcMap project that need to be sent and Execute the function. For more details on this function, see GSF Outils manual. 24 5 GSF NAV INTERFACE The main window of GSF NAV contains many sections. There is the graphic area, which consists of most of the screen, the main toolbar at the top of the screen and the zoom toolbar. Each section is explained below. Main toolbar Zoom toolbar Graphic interface 5.1 MAIN TOOLBAR The app main toolbar shows a different amount of tools depending on the orientation of the Cedar device. Only two are always visible: Tracklog and Create. All the non-visible tools and a few more can be found using the Menu button. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

5.2 ZOOM TOOLS There are four different zoom tools in this application. Three of them are available at all time on the GSF NAV graphic interface. There is also an information tool that gives details (attributes) about a selected entity on the map. This entity might have been created using GSF NAV, imported on the map (shapefile) or a part of the base map. The last zoom tool can be found in the Menu under the name Full Extent. The following table gives a brief description of those tools. Tools Description Offer a constant zoom in. Offer a constant zoom out. Centralise automatically and permanently the actual position of the device ( AutoPan ). Give information linked to the selected entity on the map. Zoom to the full extent of the map. It is possible to change the scale using two points on the screen and by moving them in opposite direction or toward the same point (closer or away from each other). 5.3 GRAPHICAL INTERFACE The map can be moved around with a movement of the finger on the screen. All layers are visible according to their scale range and the actual position of the device is shown as a blue or grey dot. The dot is grey when there is no available satellite to get the actual position and blue when there are. 26 6 CONFIGURING GSF NAV 6.1 GPS MENU When starting the application, the GPS is automatically connected. If this is not the case, it is necessary to go to the GPS menu and select GPS Off to start the connexion. This function is available for all three licence levels. To get a better precision with the Cedar CT7 tablets while using a Garmin GLO, see Appendix B: Using a Garmin GLO to Get a Better Precision for Cedar CT7 Tablets Consulting GPS Status The Status menu opens a second application, GPS Status, which gives more details on the GPS signal. This app shows the satellites position and number, the precision of the location as well as the intensity of the signal. It is possible that the Cedar device doesn t allow the app to access the location. This access must be granted in the device parameters for the app, and GSF NAV, to use and show the real position. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

6.1.2 Showing a Buffer around the GPS Location The Buffer On option adds a buffer area around the GPS location. This option can be activated or de-activated by pressing Buffer. This draws a blue circle around the actual position. Its radius is modifiable. The buffer default radius is defined at 20 meters and can be changed using the Distance button Centralising the Map on the GPS Actual Location ( AutoPan function) This option does the same action as the zoom tool, which is to centralise the actual location on the map. This function can be turned on and off using both the Autopan button and the zoom tool. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

6.2 SETTINGS MENU In the Menu, in the Settings window, there are three options to verify. They are available for all three licence levels. The first, in the General section, shows the version of the application. It can be changed from this place. The second option in this section shows the storage location that is used by the application. It can be changed by pressing on it. The last option to verify is the north to use for the Go To function. Two choices are offered: Geographic north and Magnetic North. For more details on the Go To function, see section 11 on page 46. 30 7 IMPORTING DATA It is possible to import shapefiles and TIF images and add them to the actual map. This function is available for all three licence levels. The section Import data, in the Menu, gives access to a list of shapefiles and TIF images to import. The Import button adds the layers in the existing project. The imported layers must have the same coordinate system as the project. If not, the layers will not be seen on the map. GSF NAV does not project any data on the fly. A message will appear if the coordinate system (projection) of the shapefile is different from the coordinate system of the map. This message doesn t appear for the TIF images. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The images will be added underneath the layers while the shapefiles will be placed according to their geometry. The points will be the highest displayed layers, then the polylines and finally the polygons layers. The following example shows a project having a shapefile and a satellite image that were imported in the actual map, which displays lakes, water bodies, roads and cities. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

8 CAPTURING DATA The GPS location can be recorded in a track log or captured as punctual data, polylines or polygons. Those elements can also be manually drawn in the application. All those ways of capturing data are descripted in the following sections. Those functions are available for Standard and Pro versions only. 8.1 CREATING A TRACK LOG The Tracklog option can be used to create a track log. Some setting is required to program the time lapse (frequency) between each GPS location recording Setting the Frequency The option Freq: 3s allows the user to set the recording frequency in seconds. Pressing this button will open a window in which the frequency can be changed. The text on the button will then display the new recording frequency. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

8.1.2 Recording a Track Log The GPS location can be recorded in the track log using the Tracklog Off button to start the recording. The Autopan function is automatically turned on at the same time as the Tracklog. The same button, now showing Tracklog On, is used to stop and save the track log recording. The track log can be exported in GPX format with the Export GPX option in the Menu. See section 12 on page 48 for more details. 8.2 CAPTURING GPS DATA The option GPS Capture adds a point ( waypoint ), a polyligne or a polygon on the map using the GPS location. It can be used to locate some problematic found on the terrain or obstacles that were met. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The procedure consists of selecting the desired geometry, either Point, Polyline or Polygon and the recording will take place depending on the geometry. Each procedure is described below Capturing a Point The punctual capture is done the moment the Point button is pressed. A window opens with some attributes. Those attributes are Color ( Couleur ), ID ( Ident, for labelling) and comment ( Cmt ). They can be modified before saving the point. Pressing the Save button will save all data. The point is automatically added to the map. The entry in the Ident field will also be displayed on the map. To modify or see more attributes of this point, the function Manage Data, in the Menu must be used. See section 9 on page 40 for more details Capturing a Polyline or a Polygon Capturing a polyline or a polygon is done in the same way, except there a more visible information for the polygon. The first thing to do is to specify the recording frequency. The button «Freq: 3s» opens a window in which the frequency can be modified. The default value is the last one that has been entered. The text of the button will show the new frequency once it has been changed. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The «Start» button must be used to begin the data capture for either the polyline or the polygon. Those data will be recorded at the previously defined frequency. The Start button will change color and its label will become Stop. The recording can be put on hold with the Pause button. Once it has been pressed, it changes color and its label become Resume. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

While recording, the polygon area (in ha) and perimeter (in m) are shown on the screen for a polygon and the polyline length (in m) is shown for a polyline. They are located on the top left corner of the graphical interface. The Stop button stops the recording for the polyline or the polygon and save the new entity. A window opens, showing the perimeter and the area of the polygon and the length of the polyline. Two attributes of the newly created entity can be modified in this window: its color ( Couleur field) and its ID or label ( Ident field). Pressing the Save button will save the polyline or polygon data. The entity is automatically added to the graphical interface once it is saved. The ID is also shown on the screen. To modify the information about this entity, or see more attributes of this element, the option Manage data in the Menu should be used. See section 9 on page 40 for more details. 8.3 MANUAL DATA RECORDING The Create option can be used to draw, by hand, points, polylines or polygons on the map. The geometry of the element is chosen in the Create tool bar. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

8.3.1 Ponctual Data Recording To create a point (waypoint), the proper geometry must be selected in the Create menu. Then, by pressing on the desired location on the map, the point will be created. A window will open, with three fields: Couleur (Color), Ident (ID, for labelling) and Cmt (Comment). Those fields can be modified. The point location is also shown on top of the window, in the map coordinate system. The Save button records the point and its attributes. The point is automatically added to the map as soon as it is saved. Its ID is also shown on the map. To modify the information about this entity, or see more attributes of this element, the option Manage data in the Menu should be used. See section 9 on page 40 for more details. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

8.3.2 Polyline or Polygon Recording To create a polyline or a polygon, the proper geometry must be selected in the Create menu. Then, the vertices must be added to the entity on the screen. When they are all created, a rapid double click on the screen ends the creation. A window opens describing the polyline or the polygon. The Save button saves the polyline or polygon with its attributes, modified or not. The entity is automatically added to the map as soon as it is recorded. The Ident attribute is also added as a label. To modify the information about this entity, or see more attributes of this element, the option Manage data in the Menu should be used. See section 9 on page 40 for more details. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

9 MANAGING DATA Managing data can be done from the Menu in the Manage data section. The Manage data window offers five possibilities to manage data. Those options allow the user to modify the attributes of the created entities, to delete the track log and the entities and to remove shapefiles and images from the project. Note: All modifications made to those entities are permanent and cannot be undone. The only way to remove those entities without losing the data is to export those entities in the GPX format before deleting them. Those files can be transformed into shapefiles and feature classes using GSF Outils afterward. For more details on exporting GPX, see section 12 on page 48 or consult GSF Outils manual. 9.1 MANAGING TRACK LOG The first option in the Manage data menu is Tracklog. It gives the possibility to delete all track logs that were recorded before a specified date. The actual number of track logs in the project is given on the left side of the screen. In the section on the right side of the window, there is a calendar that is used to select the date prior to which the data will be deleted. This function is available for Standard and Pro versions only. Once the date is selected, the Delete button can be used. A window appears, showing how many entities will be deleted and asking a confirmation. Pressing Yes will permanently delete those data. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

A confirmation window appears and confirms that the selected entities have been deleted. The only track logs left are those prior to the date that has been specified earlier. 9.2 MANAGING POINTS (WAYPOINTS), POLYLINES AND POLYGONS Managing points (Waypoints), polylines and polygons is done the same way. The first step is to select the data type from those proposed in the Manage data window. These functions are available for Standard and Pro versions only. The window that appears shows all entities that have been created that have the appropriate geometry. The way those entities were created ( Create or GPS Capture ) is not taken into account. To change an entity, it must be selected on the screen by pressing it until an Actions window appears. It is also possible to use the buttons at the bottom of the screen, Select all and Select none to select or de-select all entities. The Actions window proposes two options, Modify and Delete, if a single entity has been selected. If many entities are selected, the only visible option is Delete. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

9.2.1 Modifying Entities The Modify option is available only when one entity is selected. All attributes of the entity are displayed on the screen in a table. It also includes the latitude and longitude (in the map coordinate system) if the geometry of the entity is a point, the length for a polyline and both the perimeter and the area for a polygon. It is possible to modify the attributes by pressing it. Once the edition is done, the Save button records the modifications. Once done, the entity window opens again Deleting Entities An entity can be deleted from the Actions window by pressing the Delete button. This will open another window asking for a confirmation ( Feature to delete window). Saying Yes will permanently delete the selected entities. This action will be confirmed in the Process Finished window. 9.3 MANAGING IMAGES AND SHAPEFILES To manage both images and shapefiles, the Layers option must be used in the Manage data window. This section gives a list of all the layers attached to the project. This function is available for all three licence levels. To remove either a shapefile or an image from the project, the layer must be selected from the list. Its background color will turn blue once selected. Only one layer can be selected at a time. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

The Delete selected layer button opens a confirmation window ( Delete layer ) asking for a confirmation for the action. ). Saying Yes will remove the selected entity. The image and the shapefile will no longer be linked to the project, but can be used or imported again in the same project, or another one, later on. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

10 MEASURING ELEMENTS GSF NAV offers the possibility to measure a feature on the map, in distance as well as in area. Those options can be found in the Measure menu. This function is available for all three licence levels. To measure a distance, the option Measure distance must be used. It will show the length, in meters, of the line that is drawn by the user on the map. To measure an area, the option Measure area must be used. It will show the area, in hectares, of the polygon that is drawn by the user on the map. To draw the polyline or polygon, each vertex must be placed on the map by pressing the screen on each summit. The information about the entity, distance or area, is shown directly on the screen, centered at the bottom, in a grey rectangle. To erase the drawing, a fast double-click on the screen is necessary. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST

11 MOVING TOWARD A POINT (GO TO FUNCTION) The last option in the Menu tool bar is one that gives the direction and the shortest distance (Euclidian distance) between the current location and a selected point. It is in the Go To section. This function is available for all three licence levels. When no destination has been previously selected, a selection window opens. It lists all point layers that can be used for the Go to function. Once the layer is selected, another window appears with a list of points that are found in the layer. Selecting a single point activates the Go to selected feature button. This button, when used, closes the interface returns to the map. A new orange line is now visible on the screen between the actual GPS position of the device and the selected point. The direction, in decimal degrees, and the distance, in meters, are also visible on the screen. The direction is calculated using the north specified in the Settings menu. For more details on how to change the north, see section 6.2 on page 28. A new destination can be chosen from this interface using the Choose target button. This opens the layer selection window. To stop the navigation between the actual position and the selected point, the Clear button must be used. The navigation is also interrupted when GSF NAV is closed. GROUPE SYSTÈME FORÊT INC. AUGUST
