1 Planning the Electrical Systems Before you begin The following files are needed for this Let Me Try exercise: For Imperial: For Metric: c06_archi-elec_tut1.rvt M_ c06_archi-elec_tut1.rvt To access the files from your dataset: If you haven t downloaded the dataset yet, open your course homepage. Click on the link: Click here to download the dataset for this course. Save the course dataset to the C:\ drive on your computer. Options for opening a Revit MEP project file(s): Begin by dragging it directly into the application or by using the Open command from the Application menu. Double click a Revit MEP file, but be aware that if you have more than one version of Revit MEP installed on your computer, the file will open in the last version of Revit MEP you used. Please ensure you save all your projects to your computer as directed by the Let Me Try instructions. 2 In this exercise, you will specify the settings for the electrical system and also load the family components required for the project. Opening the Project File In this section, you will open the project. 1. Choose Open > Project from the Application Menu; the Open dialog box is displayed. 2. In the dialog box, browse to C: Revit_MEP_2014_Essentials Creating_Electrical_System folder and then select the c06_archi_elec_tut1 (M_ c06_archi_elec_tut1) file. Next, choose the Open button; the project file is opened. Specifying Electrical Settings 1. Choose the Electrical Settings button from the Electrical panel of the Systems tab; the Electrical Settings dialog box is displayed. 2. In the left pane of this dialog box, click on the Wiring > Wiring Types node; a table is displayed. 3. Choose the Add button in the dialog box; a new row is displayed in the table. 4. In this row, specify the settings as follows: Name: AL-THHN Material: Aluminium Temperature: 75 Insulation: THHN Max Size: 500 Neutral Required: Select the check box Conduit Type: Steel Neutral Size: Hot Conductor 5. Next, in the left pane of the dialog box, select the Voltage Definitions node: a table is displayed. 6. In the table, retain the default settings for all the parameters, refer to the image below.
3 7. In the left pane of the dialog box, select the Distribution Systems node; a table is displayed in the right pane. 8. Retain the default settings in this table, as shown in the image below. 9. In the left pane of the dialog box, click on the Load Calculations node; various options related to the calculations of the electrical load are displayed in the right pane. 10. In the right pane, choose the Load Classifications button; the Load Classifications dialog box is displayed, as shown in the image below. 11. In the Load classification types area of this dialog box, select the Other option and then in the right side of the dialog box, ensure that the Other option is selected in the Demand Factor drop-down list. 12. Choose the browse button displayed next to the Demand Factor drop-down list; the Demand Factors dialog box is displayed, as shown in the image below.

In this dialog box, ensure that the Other option is selected in the Demand factor types area and then select the By load option from the Calculation method drop-down list; a table is displayed below it. 14. In the Calculation options area, select the Incrementally for each range radio button and then choose the Split the selected row button twice (icon displayed in + symbol). On doing so, two rows are added to the table; refer to the image below.
5 15. Now, assign the settings in this table, as given in the image below. 16. Choose OK; the Demand Factors dialog box is closed. Again, choose OK twice in the Load Classifications and Electrical Settings dialog boxes to close them. Loading the Electrical Components 1. Choose the Load Family tool from the Load from Library panel; the Load Family dialog box is displayed. 2. In the dialog box, browse to the US Imperial > Electrical > MEP > Electric Power > Distribution folder (for metric, browse to US Metric > Electrical > MEP > Electric Power > Distribution) and then select the Lighting and Appliance Panelboard - 208V MLO - Surface.rfa (for metric, M_ Lighting and Appliance Panelboard - 208V MLO - Surface.rfa) file from it. 3. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then select the Lighting and Appliance Panelboard - 480V MCB - Surface.rfa (for metric, M_Lighting and Appliance Panelboard - 480V MCB - Surface.rfa) file. 4. Choose the Open button; the Load Family dialog box is closed and the selected families are loaded in the project. 5. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 and select the other family files required for this tutorial from their respective folders. Refer to the table given next for the name of the file and their folder locations.
6 Saving and Closing the Project In this section, you need to save the project and the settings. 1. Choose Save As > Project from Application Menu; the Save As dialog box is displayed. 2. In this dialog box, browse to the C: rmp_2014 c06 folder and then in the File name edit box, enter the text c06_office-space_tut1a (for metric, M_c06_Office-Space_tut1a) and then choose the Save button to save the current project file with the specified name and to close the Save As dialog box. 3. Choose the Close option from Application Menu; the file is closed.
