3 Getting Started Remove your SpringBoard Lite from Ship Mode. You received a battery charger in the box with your SpringBoard Lite. 1. Plug the small end of the battery charger cable into the small battery charger port on the left side of the SpringBoard Lite. 2. Select: This key is on the front of the case. It will take a few moments for the device to turn On. 3

7 Getting to Know the Parts of Your SpringBoard Lite The Front Panel Part Description When this light flashes, the batteries need to be charged. Plug in the battery charger. Battery Low Battery Charging When you plug in the charger, the "Charging" light flashes. A rapid flash indicates fast-charging; a slow flash indicates that the battery is charged but it will continue to trickle-charge as long as the charger is plugged in. Turns the device ON or OFF. If you turn the device off with this button, you must use it to turn the device back on. ON/OFF This takes you to the Toolbox where you can use the system menus. Toolbox 7

8 Part Description Use this to select different Activities. Choose Activity Set Up Recording Microphone Use this key for setting up Pages, Activities and storing vocabulary. After you select the SET-UP key, select the key on your overlay you want to change and follow the prompts on your touchscreen. This is the small round hole to the right of the SET-UP key. When you record messages, speak toward this area. 8

9 Top of SpringBoard Lite Learning IR Window Sending IR Window Part Infrared Windows Handle Description Use these windows to teach remote control commands to the SpringBoard Lite and then to send the commands to your remote controlled devices. To teach remote control signals to your SpringBoard Lite, point a remote control at the window on the right as you look at the top of the case (as in the picture above). When you send the signals from the SpringBoard Lite to a TV or other remote controlled appliances, the window on the left must be facing in the general direction of the object you want to control. Use the built-in handle to carry your SpringBoard Lite. 9

10 Back of SpringBoard Lite Reset Button Battery Door Part Battery Door Reset Button Description The device batteries are underneath this door. There is also a card slot at the top of the battery door that holds the system software card. Should you need to, you can remove the battery door by unscrewing it from the case. Unbend a paper clip and poke it into the hole to press the re-set button. 10

11 Accessories (not pictured) Part Wire Table Stand Wheelchair Mounting Plate Description The wire table stand allows the SpringBoard Lite to sit on a table in a more vertical position, rather than flat on a surface. The wire table stand is an option in countries other than the United States. The optional wheelchair mounting plate allows the SpringBoard Lite to be attached to a wheelchair mount. If your SpringBoard Lite stops working for some reason, push the re-set button to see if that solves the problem. 11

Plug an external microphone in here Plug single and dual switches into Switch A and Switch B ports. A USB flash drive plugs into this port. Use it for memory transfers, importing graphics and downloading music files. You can also use this port to plug in an external headpointer. Plug a USB cable or Bluetooth Adapter in here for computer emulation. 12

Plug one end of the battery charger in here. Plug the other end into a working wall outlet. Warning! Use only the charger that came with your SpringBoard Lite. 15 Using Your SpringBoard Lite The Exploration Wizard Select the TARGET and PIC TEST keys to go to overlays that can help you find out which overlay might be best for you. Select the keys in the bottom row to take you to regular overlays that you can use as your own. 15

16 Overlays The Overlays display your Core Vocabulary. Core vocabulary is the vocabulary that you will use the most. It is the vocabulary you will always want to be able to go to easily. 15-LOC (15 Location) In this manual we will be using the 15-LOC overlay for examples. Select 16

17 The 15-LOC Overlay screen appears. Your Core Vocabulary is found on the overlay screens. 17

18 Using the 15-LOC Overlay Select Do This Select the eat key from the top row. Tip You see: The eat key is located in the Activity Row. The keys in the Activity Row can change. Your device says, I want to eat. 18

19 Activity Row Activity Row Keys Activities contain words that are not part of your core vocabulary, but that you might use frequently in conversation. They help finish sentences. When you selected want and to from the I want to eat example on the previous Page, the Activity Row keys changed. They offered you different words that you might want to use. We selected eat from the Activity Row. Select Sometimes you can change the Activity Row yourself by selecting the CHOOSE ACTIVITY key. 19

20 Pages Pages are single screens that are devoted to one subject or activity. The SpringBoard Lite has a lot of Pages already programmed into it. You can see some of these Pages if you select the PAGES key in the Activity Row. Select You see: Select 20

21 You see: Select the TO CORE key to return to your Core vocabulary overlay. Each key on this Page will take you to a new page where you can choose a game to play, a book to read, or many other things. Go to page 33 to learn how to create your own Pages. 21

22 Full Toolbox Select You see the Full Toolbox. The Full Toolbox contains all the SpringBoard Lite menus. The white keys are functions that allow you to change a device setting immediately without opening a menu. 22

23 Menus contain options that you can select to change settings or perform an action. Menus are yellow, green, orange and purple. Select You see all the options you can use to change the feedback that you receive from the SpringBoard Lite. Go to the SpringBoard Lite Operator's Manual for information about the menus in the Full Toolbox. 23

24 Simple Toolbox Select You see the Simple Toolbox. The Simple Toolbox is a pared down version of the Full Toolbox. There are only a few often-used menus and functions in the Simple Toolbox. The menus in the Simple Toolbox are also easier to use because they do not have all the options the Full Toolbox menus have. Any Toolbox functions you learn in this manual can be performed from either the Simple Toolbox or the Full Toolbox. 24

25 Using the Simple Toolbox Speaker Volume You can change the volume of the SpringBoard Lite in the Simple Toolbox. Select to adjust the volume of your SpringBoard Lite. Look at the Status key to check volume levels. The middle bar tells you where your volume is set. If the bar is filled with green lines, the volume is at its loudest. 25

26 Status Key The Status key is available in the Full Toolbox and the Simple Toolbox. Select GOTO HOME to return to your main vocabulary overlay. For the Bi-Lingual Toolbox: Select the Status key to toggle between the English Toolbox and the Spanish Toolbox. Status key The top row on the Status key shows you how much power is left in your SpringBoard Lite batteries. The middle row shows you where the device volume is set. The bottom row shows you where the headphone volume is set if you are using headphones. Status Key and the Bi-Lingual Toolbox If you purchased a bi-lingual SpringBoard Lite (English/Spanish), select the Status key to toggle between the English Toolbox and the Spanish Toolbox. 26

27 Storing Core Messages Select OR Select You see: Select any icon to store your message under. 27

28 You see: Record Your Message Select Do This Press and hold Record Message (press and hold) and speak your message. When you are finished, release the key. Press Listen to Recording to hear your message. If you like your message, select OK. If you don't like your message, select Record Message (press and hold) again and re-record the message. 3. Press OK when you are finished. 28

29 Choose an Icon for Your Message Select an icon that will help you remember your message. Select an Icon Category. Choose an icon to use from the category you selected. You see your Spelling Page. 29

30 Select Do This If you want a word or words to be displayed when your message is spoken, type them in now. If a word is already on the display and you don't want to use it, you can erase it by selecting the CLEAR DISPLAY key. Type in your own word. Select OK when you have finished typing. Tip If you do not want any words displayed just select the OK key. You See: This screen allows you to add a label to your icon, change the key color, or even change the icon if you decide you don't like the one you selected. The key you defined displays the icon you selected for it. 30

31 Define Additional Keys Select Do This When you have finished with your icon, select Choose next key to define and repeat these instructions until you have stored all the messages you want. When you have finished select OK. 3. If you do not want to define any more keys, just select OK. Go to the SpringBoard Lite Operator's Manual to learn more about the SPEECH MENU. You can select High or Low quality speech for your recording. High Quality is the default. 31

32 Erasing Core Messages Select Select Do This 1. Select the icon for the message you want to erase. 2. You see a Warning Box: Select YES to erase or NO to keep the message. 32

33 Create a Page Select You see the Spelling Page: 33

34 Select Do This Type a name for your Page. Select OK when you have finished typing a name. Select the overlay size you want to use. For this example, press the down arrow until you see 15. Tip The number you choose for the Overlay Size is the number of keys that will appear on your new Page. 4. Select OK when you are ready to move to the next screen. You see: Select NO. See page 41 to learn to add a Visual Scene. 34

35 You will see your new Page. All the keys on it are blank. 35

36 Define Keys on Your Overlay All Pages must have a key that will return you to your main vocabulary screen, so let's define a GO TO CORE key like this one: Tip Core is another word for the main screen. For this example, select the key to the far right of the Text Display Area at the top of the screen. 36

37 Store a Spoken Message with Your Key You can store a message that will be spoken when you press the GO TO CORE key. Select Do This 1. Press and hold the Record Message (press and hold) key. 2. Speak your message. Tip You might want to say, "Go Back" or "Go to Core" or "Go Home" or something similar Release the button and listen to the recording. If you don't like it, re-record it. Select OK when you are finished. Tip If you do not want a message, just select the OK key without recording anything. 37

38 Name Your Key and Add an Icon We will add an arrow and the words GO TO CORE to our key. Add an Arrow Icon We want an arrow icon for our key, so let's select a Category that might have arrows in it, Computer Access. Select COMPUTER ACCESS. Select More Items until you see the arrow you want to use. Select that arrow. 38

39 You see the Spelling Page: The SpringBoard automatically added the name of the icon in the Text Display Area. Change the Key Name Select Do This 1. OR Select the CLEAR DISPLAY or DELETE CHARACTER key to delete the icon name. In this example, smright is the icon name. 2. Type your new key name. For this example, type GO TO CORE. Tip Type a name that will help you remember the function of the key. This will take you to your main vocabulary screen, so you could also type GO TO HOME or MY VOCABULARY. 39

40 Add a SpringBoard Tool to the Key We need to add a SpringBoard Tool to our key. This tool will tell the SpringBoard what to do when we press the key. Select Do This Select the More Items key until you see GOTO HOME. 3. See the Text Display Area. It should look like this: Tip GO TO CORE is your key name and GOTO HOME is the SpringBoard Tool name

41 You see: Select Choose next key to define to define a new key. Select OK when you are finished. Select Change Icon, Change Label, or Change Key Color to change your key. 41

42 Create a Visual Scene Page A visual scene is a graphic (picture) that goes over the keys on your Page. You can define the keys on the Page so that they tell you things about the picture. Tip The SpringBoard Lite already has some graphics stored in it that you can use for a Visual Scene. Go to the Transfer Memory chapter in the SpringBoard Lite Operator's Manual if you want to download your own graphics to use. Select 42

43 You see the Spelling Page: Select Do This Type a name for your page. Select OK when you have finished typing a name. Select the overlay size you want to use. Press the down arrow until you see 36. Tip A visual scene looks better on an overlay with a lot of keys. 4. Select OK when you are ready to move to the next screen. 43

44 You see: The SpringBoard asks if you want to add a scene picture. Select YES. You see: Select Choose Scene. 44

45 You will see a screen with all the pre-stored pictures you can use for a visual scene. Select a picture to use. Select OK. 45

46 You see a screen that allows you to change, remove, or keep your picture: Select OK to keep your picture. You see a screen that allows you to change the size of the picture. 46

47 Change the Size of the Picture Select Change the size of the picture. You see: Select where the top left corner of the picture will be placed. Select where the bottom right corner of the picture will be placed. 47

48 Tip It is best to leave some keys visible on the overlay and not cover all the keys with your picture. You see a preview of your overlay: Select Change the size of the picture if you want your picture to cover more or fewer keys. Select OK when you are finished. 48

49 Define Keys for the Visual Scene Now you can define keys by adding messages that teach you about the Visual Scene. For this scene you might want to use words like "DOG", "BOWL", "DINNER" or whatever you think will be helpful. Tip Don't forget to define a GO BACK or GO TO CORE key. See Define Keys on Your Overlay on page 36 for more information. Select a blank key to define. 49

50 Store a Spoken Message with Your Key Select Do This 1. Press and hold the Record Message (press and hold) key. 2. Speak your message. Tip Say words related to the scene. For this picture, you could choose words like "DOG", "BOWL", or "DINNER." 3. Select OK when you are finished. Tip If you do not want a message, just select the OK key without recording anything. 50

52 You see the Spelling Page: The SpringBoard automatically added the name of the icon in the Text Display Area. Select OK. Tip If you want to change your key name, see Change the Key Name on page

53 Go to Your New Visual Scene Page Select You see the Page Menu: Select More Items to search for the name of the Page you created. When you find your Page name, select that key. Tip Your Page will have the name you gave it when you first started to define the key. Pages are listed alphabetically. 53

55 Link One Page to Another Page You can link any Page to any other Page. Let s link the ANIMALS Page to the COLORS Page. Select You see the Page Menu: Select 15COLORS 55

59 Link the Page Select Page Link. 59

60 You see a warning box: Select Yes. This will create a two-way link. No will create a one-way link. If you select YES, you will create a two-way link; you can move between your linked Page and your original Page. If you select NO, you will create a one-way link; you stay on your linked Page. Tip If you select NO, then decide you do want a 2-way link, go to the Full Toolbox and use the Modify Page menu to "erase key contents." Then create a new link. 60

61 You see the Page Menu: Select 15ANIMALS. You see: The Text Display Area shows that your link is complete. Select OK. 61

62 Change the Name of the Link Notice that the label name on the key is the actual link name. Select Change Label. You see the Spelling Page: ANIMAL Type in ANIMAL. Select OK to exit. Select OK to exit the next menu and return to the Toolbox. 62

63 Try Your Link Select You see the Page Menu: Select 15COLORS 63

64 You see the 15COLORS Page: Select brown. The word brown will appear in the Text Display Area. Select your link key, ANIMAL. 64

65 You see the ANIMAL Page: Select the dog. You are automatically returned to the 15COLORS Page. Tip The 15COLORS Page is your original Page and the ANIMAL Page is your linked Page. 65

66 You see: In your Text Display Area you see the color name and the animal name you selected, "brown dog." Tip With a two-way link you can go to your linked Page, select any key, and return back to you original Page as often as you want! 66

67 Modify a Page You will Modify a Page if you need to change something on a Page that has already been created. Go to the Page you want to modify. Select You can use the PAGES key in the Activity Row if the Page you want is there or you can open the Page Menu in the Toolbox and select the Page you want. Select Do This Select the SET-UP key from the front of the case Select the key that you want to work on. Follow the instructions in the Text Display Area. 67

68 Delete a Page Select You see the Page Menu: Select the Page you want to delete. 68

69 Select YES to delete the page or NO to cancel the action and keep the page. 69

70 Next Steps You have learned how to use your overlay. You have become familiar with the keys in the Simple Toolbox. You have stored messages, created a Page, linked Pages and added a Visual Scene to a Page. You know how to raise and lower the volume of the SpringBoard Lite. The SpringBoard Lite Operator's Manual is on the Support CD that came with your SpringBoard. In it you can learn how to set up a switch, make memory transfers, import song files and graphics to your SpringBoard, create Activities, switch overlays and many other things that make it fun and easy to talk with your SpringBoard. Keep the Operator's Manual handy on your computer desktop. When you have a question or need to know how to do something, you can check the Table of Contents or the Index first before you call the Service Department.
