4 Menu Commands This section lists all FontLab menu commands and their keyboard shortcuts. 5 Edit Menu Commands The Edit menu offers the following commands: Command Shortcut Description Undo Redo Cut Copy Paste Delete + Z + + Z + X + C + V Undoes previous operation Redoes previously undone operation Deletes selected characters or part of glyph outline and moves it to the clipboard Copies data from the selected characters or glyph outline to the clipboard Pastes data from the clipboard into the font or glyph outline Removes selected characters or glyph outline Duplicate Insert Find and Replace Select All Deselect Invert Selection + D + A + U + I Duplicates selected part of glyph outline Replaces the current selection with the clipboard contents Opens the Find and Replace dialog box Selects whole glyph outline or all characters in the font, depending on type of active window Removes selection from the font or glyph outline Inverts selecton of glyph s outline. Selected nodes become deselected and vice versa 5

8 Tools Menu Commands The Tools menu offers the following commands allowing you to select one of the editing tools for font and glyph editing: Command Shortcut Description Actions Allows you to select one of the actions Mask/ Bitmap Hints/Guides See Mask/Bitmap table See Hints/Guides table H Mirror V Mirror Check Connections Reverse all Contours Remove Overlap Nodes at Extremes +F10 or + F10 +F9 Makes a mirror transformation in the horizontal direction Makes a mirror transformation in the vertical direction Analyses an outline and detects the types of connections between outline primitives (lines and curves) Reverses the direction of all contours of the glyph Removes all overlapping parts of the outline Automatically inserts nodes at the extreme points of curves Snap to Guides Optimize Convert to TrueType Curves +F Moves all outline nodes onto guidelines, hints or grid if they are close to them Applies the automatic outline optimization feature Converts all Type 1 (3 rd -order) curves to TrueType (2 nd -order) curves Convert to Type 1 Curves Operations Converts all TrueType (2 nd -order) curves to Type 1 (3 rd -order) curves Activates one of the glyph modification operations Transform Selection + 9 or +9 Interpolate Position Bitmap Scales, rotates or skews the selected portion of the outline Modifies the outline by moving a few base points Sets the size and position of the bitmap background layer Envelope + + E Modifies the outline as if it was stretched on rubber 8

13 Navigating in the Font Window You can use the keyboard keys to navigate in the font chart: Arrow keys Moves the current character mark one cell right, left, up or down, according to the key used Command+Right arrow Moves 2 cells right Command+Left arrow Moves 2 cells left Page Up and Page Down Moves the character mark one screen up or down Home Moves the character mark to the leftmost character on the current row End Moves the character mark to the rightmost character on the current row Command+Home Moves the character mark to the first character on the chart Command+End Moves the character mark to the last character on the chart. By holding down the Shift key you can also select the characters. 13

14 Edit Tool Commands Here is a short description of the outline editing interface of FontLab for Macintosh. CLICK Node "Activates" the node and allows its movement with the arrow keys: Arrows Command+Arrows Shift+Arrows Command+Shift+Arrows Tab PageUp and PageDown Delete moves the node one font unit in any direction moves the node 10 font units moves the whole contour one font unit in any direction moves the contour 10 font units switches between node and BCPs moves to previous or next node deletes node Segment "Activates" the segment and allows you to move it with the arrow keys. BCP (Bezier Control Point) or off-curve point "Activates" the point and allows you to move it with the arrow keys. DOUBLE-CLICK Node Changes the connection mode from sharp to smooth to fixed. Segment Selects the whole contour. Selection Activates the transform tool for selection. Bitmap background Activates the bitmap editing operation. SHIFT-CLICK Node or Segment Reverses selection state of the node or segment. OPTION-CLICK Line segment Converts segment into a Bezier curve. Bezier segment Converts segment into an arc of an ellipse based on BCPs. Spline segment Converts segment into a Bezier curve. 14

15 Node Changes the connection mode from sharp to smooth to fixed (same as double-click). SHIFT-OPTION-CLICK Bezier segment Converts segment into a spline segment. Line segment Converts segment into a Bezier curve. CONTROL-CLICK On node, guideline, hint, baseline or sidebearings Opens the pop-up menu for this object or thhe common pop-up menu if clicked on empty space. On segment Activates the Position tool. CONTROL-OPTION-CLICK Activates the Position tool. COMMAND-CLICK On any object but segment Opens the properties panel for an object. Pressing Option-Return opens the Node properties panel. COMMAND-OPTION-CLICK Segment (line, spline or Bezier) Inserts a new node. DRAG Node Moves the node. Hold the Shift key down to constrain the movement directions to 15 degree increments; hold Command+Shift down to constrain movement only to vertical and horizontal directions. If a sharp node connecting two Bezier curves is moved, then hold the Option key down to move it without the BCP points. Segment Moves the segment in non-nodes editing mode. Guideline in the middle moves guideline; close to window edge: slants guideline. Shift key constrains the slant angle to 3 degree increments. Hint Moves the hint. Hold the Shift key down to move only one line of the hint. Link Allows changing of a link s attachment points. 15

16 Baseline Moves the baseline. Sidebearings Moves the sidebearings. Empty space Activates the selection operation. Rulers Adds new guideline. SHIFT-DRAG (press and hold Shift before dragging node or segment) Node If the node is between two smooth BCPs, moves it along the BCP line. BCP moves the BCP along the control vector. Curve segment Edits the segment in non-nodes mode but doesn t allow change of directions of BCP vectors. OPTION-DRAG Node If it is between two smooth BCPs, moves the node in "auto curvature" mode. Hold the Command key down to move all BCPs of both curves. If the node is between two sharp BCPs, moves the node without the BCPs. BCP moves the next BCP (if any) in symmetrical mode (this mode can be switched on and off during movement by pressing the Option key). Selection Creates an EPS file with the selection when moved to the Finder. COMMAND-DRAG Segment Moves the entire segment. Ruler Adds a new hint. SPACE-DRAG Scrolls the window with the Hand tool. COMMAND-SPACE and COMMAND-OPTION-SPACE Zoom in and Zoom out tools. Z and X KEYS Instant zoom in (Z) and out (X). Both keys work even when you drag a node. < and > KEYS Show the previous or next glyph in the Glyph window. 16
