Good Old Things (even before Mt Lion) Application Switcher Fast User Switching Wi-Fi Information Was called AirPort in Snow Leopard (Hold down option key) 2
New Things Airport Utility (Lion item) Airport Utility 6.1 Lots of Info! ISP Router Address? DNS Service ISP Domain LAN IP series Devices on Wi Fi 3
New Things (2) Resume (windows) What happens when App Starts Or at Log In / Start up To Manage / Control what happens System Pref / General Quit App Options Start App Options Option Key changes to Quit & Keep Windows Depress Shift when clicking on App in Dock to prevent Windows from opening Log Out Check box Option, Command, Q bypasses this window Sometimes the space bar toggles the checkbox 4
New Things (3a) Auto Save & Versions Auto Save & Versions Still only for Apple Software Not M$oft, for example Some Apps have had Auto Save but are not yet using Lion s features (e.g. Bento) Auto Save Writes to Disk At any lull in your keystroking At least every 5 minutes The Red button does now flag changed data There is a Duplicate command (Shift, Command,S) There is a SaveAs command (Shift, Option, Command,S) There is a Save a Version (Cmd S) You must be aware whether you are using an AutoSave App or not! Otherwise you could lose important work! Apple has provided the Application Program Interface specs so M$oft and others can implement Auto Save and Versions 5
New Things (3b) Versions Versions Now only for Apple Software Not M$oft, for example Versions Saves copy within the file At Least once an hour Every Time you do Cmd S All are Time Tagged for retrieval Versions is like Time Machine but within the document. Mt. Lion stores hourly versions for a day, daily versions for a month and weekly versions for prior months. Have NOT found any indication of a limit on the number of versions File / Revert Document... to Browse Versions or to Revert to last Saved Creates Time Machine like view to select / use a prior version Only stores what changed from prior Save Only current version is provided when you share the file Does NOT replace the existing work space, that becomes another version Demo Tutor 6
Send files / folders New Things (4) AirDrop Only between Lion or Mt Lion systems Only recent Macs Doesn t use the Local Wi-Fi Only when AirDrop Selected in Sidebar Recipient has to Accept transfer Goes into Downloads folder Faster than sneaker net, etc. Can initiate as sharing option Demo AirDrop 7

Some Quick Tips Reduce Level of Power-On Chime Lower Speaker setting BEFORE shutting Down or Restarting Quickly send Safari URL in Mail message Command, Shift and I (eye)creates new message with URL in body Quickly send Safari s Screen in Mail message Just Command and I puts Safari s screen as attachment in Mail message BUT Safari s Reader function (shown last week) is probably better than either of the above Quickly Attach Files to Mail message Simply drag the file(s) to Mail icon in Dock Creates a new message with the Attachments 33
Don t Modify Folders Folders and files in your Library are used by your Applications Don t rename, Don t move, Don t change the internals May be Appropriate to Copy to another Drive or CD / DVD Certainly Needed to Backup for protection itunes, iphoto, imovie, idvd, etc place working files in User folders Do NOT change the internals, the Application will probably lose your Data Rename Only the Main Folder: itunes folder, iphoto Library folder Main Folder can be moved to another drive Main Folder can be copied. 34
Important but Not Touched Disk Utility Create Disk Images, Burn DVDs or Multi-Session CDs Verify / Repair Disk Permissions Verify Disk, early warning on approaching disk failure Erase Free Disk Space (Not after cocktails, etc For giving computer away) Erase Disk (Not after cocktails, etc) KeyChain Access Secure place to store your Passwords in encrypted form. 36 Not Touched Applications (2) Calendar Apple s visual calendar program, Alerts are my primary benefit While I used to have a paper calendar I never looked at it. Stopped buying them for myself. My Luddite still uses them! Visual alerts on computer screen alerts to my Profile in Address Book.
