1 User s Guide ExTERM Software for Model RH520 Humidity/Temperature Chart Recorder Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Extech Model RH520 Paperless Humidity/Temperature Chart Recorder that includes ExTERM software and a PC interface cable. The software is dedicated for use with the EX520 Chart Recorder. It can display 49,000 Temperature and Humidity readings in chart form on your PC. Data is stored as a text file (csv format) that can then be opened in a spreadsheet and other software programs. Software Installation NOTE: Close all programs (including spy sweepers and virus scanners running in the background) before downloading the data from the RH520 to the PC. If other programs are running and accessing the hard drive, then data can be dropped in transmission which would lead to a corrupted data set and cause ExTERM to crash. If this occurs, close all programs (including ExTERM), re-open ExTERM and download the data again. 1. Place the supplied software CD in the PC CD-ROM drive and run setup.exe 2. Change the path if necessary or choose the Finish button to install the program to its default location. 3. Connect the RS-232 cable to the PC s COM port but DO NOT connect the RH520 to the cable at this time. 4. Launch the program by double clicking the program file in the location where it was saved during installation.
2 The ExTERM opening screen will appear momentarily and the program will open. 2
3 Connecting and File Opening Click on the File pulldown menu. Select New Connection to download data from the RH520. Use the pulldown menu to select the port the meter will connect to. All available COM ports are displayed in this list. In the New Connection pulldown menu, you can also select File to view any previously saved data files containing comma-separatedvalues (csv) obtained from the RH520. Note: Previously saved files may also be retrieved by using Open on the File pulldown menu 3
4 Downloading Memory To download data from the RH520, select the COM port and click OK. Connect the RH520 to the RS-232 cable. Once the serial cable is connected, the data will automatically begin to download to the PC. Note: The RH520 should not be connected to the PC until the window Please Connect the Device Now is opened. The RH520 will download all of its recorded data to the PC. Do not unplug the RS-232 cable from the meter during the data download process or data may be corrupted. Note: After the data transmission is complete, click the Stop Data Transfer button to close the transfer window. 4
5 Graphical Display The downloaded data will be displayed in the Temperature and Humidity charts: 5
6 Gridlines Use the View pulldown menu to add Gridlines and Timestamps to the charts 6
7 Saving a File To save the downloaded data to a file (csv format), use the Save As command found in the File pulldown menu. The saved file can then be imported into Excel for analysis. 7
8 ExTERM Graphical Controls 1. Select the MAX Temperature value to be displayed 2. MAX/MIN Temperatures of the current chart 3. Automatically set the vertical scale of the Temperature Chart 4. Select the MIN Temperature value to be displayed 5. Select the MAX Humidity value to be displayed 6. Automatically set the vertical scale of the Humidity Chart 7. Select the MIN Humidity value to be displayed 8. MAX/MIN Humidity of the current chart 9. Selection of the First and Last Records to be displayed on the Charts
