Study Guide: Geographic Informations Systems Area: Land-use Analysis with ArcView 3.x Subject: Using Soil maps to Assess site suitability Objectives: Upon completing this study guide you should be able to: Join tables to create suitability maps Create layouts that share properties Analyze and correct field names Apply advanced query techniques Necessary Skills: review these items if you need to.. In order to complete this study guide you should be able to: 1. Start ArcView extensions within a project 2. Add image themes and feature data themes to a project 3. Use the Geoprocessing Wizard 4. Apply queries to data in the GIS Introduction: A group interested in conserving and restoring land has contacted your company, a consulting engineering firm. The group has the opportunity to purchase a large parcel of land in Northern Illinois. Before obtaining the land, the group needs to know some things about the land. Your company has contracted to provide maps and reports for them. The group has asked for maps on: a. the agricultural productivity of the parcel b. the potential wetland areas in the parcel c. the location of the parcel As a GIS technician, your job will be to take the available data and develop suitability maps for the site. Other staff in your office has obtained and made available for you the following data: 1. Tiger streets and roads for the county 2. SSURGO soil data for the county 3. Aerial photographs of the area. 4. A parcel map of the property in question.
The property is located in Dekalb County, Illinois. The data is provided to you on a CD, with the following note: Note: The data may be on another location. Check with your instructor. Subject parcel Dekalb Co. Illinois. Data is contained in Illinois-Dekalb folder The following subfolders are used: Rawdata folder contains the Tiger data for Dekalb Co.in a Tigerdata subfolder & the parcel shapefile. Tiger17037cty00-county polygon Tiger17037lka-county roads Tiger17031lkb-county railroads Tiger17037lkc-misc. polygon features Tiger17037lkh-streams, rivers, Tiger17037wat-water polygons Aerial folder contains 2 aerial photos of area Mrsid format Soilil037 has two subfolders Spatial contains the soil polygons Tabular contains the attribute tables for the soils Building your ArcView Project Data Management. Since the original data is on a CD, you will need to move it to a write able storage space. 1. Copy the Illinois-Dekalb folder and the subfolders to your harddrive. 2. Create a new subfolder under the Illinois-Dekalb folder and name it Work. 3. Start ArcView a. Click OK to Create a new project with a new View. b. When asked if you would like to add data to your view, respond No. 4. Set your working directory to the Work folder you created. Click the File pull-down. select Set Working Directory
Enter the path to your working directory in the Work Directory dialog box. Note: you can cut & paste this from the address bar in Windows Explorer. When finished, click OK. Loading themes. 1. Click the Add Data Theme in ArcView. 2. When the Add Theme dialog box opens add the following themes: Tiger1703lka Tiger1703lkh Soil mapunit polygons il037a.shp Parcel.shp When the themes are loaded and displayed, your table of contents should be similar to the one below.
Clip the soils for your parcel. 1. Access the Extension list. File>Extensions Scroll down to find Geoprocessing Place a check mark to the left of Geoprocessing Click OK 2. Start the Geoprocessing Wizard View > Geoprocessing Wizard Make sure the button next to Clip one theme based on another is checked.
3. Click Next 4. The Clip dialog box will open In the.. 1) Select input theme to clip: Select the soil polygons il037_a.shp 2) Select a polygon overlay theme: Select Parcel.shp 3) Specify the output file Output File: Click the butt In the resulting dialog box, make sure you will be saving to your Work folder. Name the output file: parcel_soil Click OK 4) Complete the Clip: Click Finish on the Geoprocessing dialog box.
A new theme, parcel_soil will be added to your view. Clean unnecessary themes from the view. 1. Click on the il037_a theme to make it active. 2. Click Edit > Delete Themes to remove the il037_a.shp. 3. Click Yes or Yes to All on the dialog box that opens. Note: This would be a good time to save the project so that you do not loose data if there is a problem with the computer. Save the project to your Work folder as: Dekalb_parcel
Load attribute data tables into the project. There are a number of tables that contain the attribute data for this project. They have been prepared for you and placed in the Tabular subfolder in the Soilil037 folder. The illustration to the right shows the tables which are available. Load them all into the project. Click the Table icon in the Project Window. Click Add and browse to the location of the tables. They will be in the Tabular subfolder of the Soilil037 folder. The tables are as follows: cropyield, mucrop_yld, muaggatt, and wetland. Now that you have added the essential data to the project, you are ready to begin building the maps requested by your client. Building the location map 1. Create a New View: In the Project Window Click on the View icon. Click New 2. Set the View properties: From the View pull-down select Properties Name this View: Parcel location Set the distance units to miles, map units to decimal degrees.
3. Add the following themes to the view using the Add Theme button. Parcel_soils.shp Parcel.shp Tgr17037lkh Tgr17037lka 4. Differentiate the water features on the map. Click Zoom Extent Click on the Trg17037lkh theme to make it active. Open the Theme Table. Look at the Fename field by scrolling through the records (it helps if you click on the Fename field in the table and click Field >Sort Ascending from the pull-down menus) Notice the names. The can be roughly subdivided into Creeks, Rivers, (Rivers are also indicated by R ) and Ditches. Many of the records have no names. Making some assumptions.rivers are larger than creeks, ditches are different from creeks, and the records with no names are probably small drainage ways. We will sort the features by these names. Open the Query dialog box. Double Click on Fename Click on the = button. Key in the following: * Creek Your query builder should look as follows:
Click New Set. The query will select all of the features of Tgr17037lkh that are labeled as Creeks. From the Theme pull-down, select Convert to shapefile. Save the new shapefile as dekalb_creeks. From the Theme pull-down, click Clear Selected Features Return to the Query Builder. Create the following query: ([Fename]= * River ) Click New Set Change the query to: ([Fename]= * R ) Click Add to Set Close the Query Builder Activate the Parcel Location view (click on it) Access Theme>Convert to shapefile Save the selected features as dekalb_river. When asked if you want to add the shape file to the view, answer Yes.
Using the legend editor (double click on the symbol under the theme name in the Table of Contents) Change Dekalb_river to Blue, and a line width of 3. Change Dekalb_creeks to Blue, and a line width of 2 Change Tgr17037lkh to Blue, and a line width of 1 Now that the hydrography (streams, creeks, & rivers) has been illustrated, the same type of work can be done with the roads. The road layer is Tgr17037lka. Activate this layer by clicking on it. Look at the theme table and identify the state and US highways. Note: Tiger data frequently labels different parts of a feature with different names (Fename). The attribute table must be carefully checked to find all of the terms used for a road. The following Fenames identify the US and state highways in this dataset: I-88 State Route 38 State Highway 23 United States Highway 34 United States Highway 30 Illinois Route 72 Illinois Route 23 Il Route 72 Il Route 64 Il Route 38 Il Route23 Lincoln (this is a state higway) Use the query builder to create a theme that contains all of the state or US highways. Be sure to use the tools used on the Rivers queries. Use the Geoprocessing Wizard if necessary to merge themes. Create and save a US_state_hwys theme.
Turn on the US_state_hwys theme and uniquely identify the Interstate (I-88) and the US Highways and State Highways using the Legend Editor. Make I-88 red with a width of 3 Make the state highways green with a width of 2 Make the US highways orange with a width of 2 Note: In the legend editor you may select multiple records by holding the Shift key down. All of the Illinois highways can be selected by holding the Shift key down and single clicking on each record. When all have been selected double click while still holding the Shift key down. The Palette dialog will open. Any setting changed in the palette will apply to all of the selected records. Option When you return to the View, you may find that some of the features which are obviously part of the highways have not been selected. This may be due to problems in the Tiger attribute tables. You may want to select the features and edit the table Fename to apply the proper label.
Your Table of Contents should look similar to the one illustrated on the next page. This would be a good time to save your project! Use the label tools to label the state and US highways. Use the Use the Use the for the Interstate. for the State Highways. for the US Highways. Place a text label using the tool to label the Conservation Parcel. Creating the first layout This problem asked for three maps. To enhance the appearance of the report, it will be important that all of the layouts have the same look.
Create a layout on an 11 x 8.5 page. Make sure to include a compass rose, and scale. You do not have to include a legend if you place labels on the major roads. (State and US highways). Use the Portrait template found with View > Layouts to make the initial map. Title the map: Conservation Parcel Location Dekalb Co. Illinois The illustration below should resemble your map.
Creating Agriculture Productivity Map of Conservation Parcel The major crops in north central Illinois are corn and soybeans. These crops will be the index crops to base the productivity of the soils on. Index crop is the crop that is used as an indicator. 1. Create a New View in ArcView. a. Click View icon in Project dialog box. b. Click New c. Set View properties to the same as Parcel Location view (distance units=miles)(map units = decimal degrees). d. Name the view: Agriculture Productivity 2. Copy Parcel_soil theme from Parcel Location view to the Agriculture Productivity view. Make the Parcel Location view active Click on Parcel_soil theme to make it active Click Edit>Copy theme Make the Agriculture Productivity view active. Click Edit>Paste 3. Create tables for crop productivity analysis Load the mucrop_yld table into your project if it is not already loaded.. It should be located in the tabular subfolder of the Illinois- Dekalb folder. Open the mucrop_yld table. Check the fields, notice that the only yield data field with values is the second nonirryiel field. Also notice that several fields have the same name, this will cause problems. Open the table properties: Table>Properties In the Alias column, next to the second nonirryiel label enter cropyld.
Click OK. Notice that the field name in the table has changed to cropyld. With the table still active, use the query builder to select all of the Cropname = Corn records. Export the resulting selections as a new table. File > Export Select dbase as the export format. Name the new table corn_yld. Clear the selections using Edit>Select None Use the same techniques to create a Soybean yield table, called soybean_yld.
Load these new tables into your project. 4. Create High, Medium, Low map for Corn productivity. In the Agriculture Productivity view open the theme attribute table. Open the corn_yld table. Join the corn_yld table to the attributes of Parcel_soil theme using the mukey field. Return to the Agriculture Productivity view. Access the Legend Editor for the Parcel_soil theme. Set the Legend Type to Graduated Color Set the Classification Field to cropyld. Click the Classify button.
Set the type to Natural Breaks Set the number of classes to 3. Click OK. In the resulting Legend Editor, set the label values to Low, Medium, and High to reflect the yield ranges. Change the High level color to Green Change the Medium level color to Yellow Change the Low level color to Red. Apply this legend. (Click Apply) Rename this theme Corn Yield. This would be a good time to save your project! 5. Create a High, Medium, Low productivity chart for Soybeans.
Copy another Parcel_soil theme into the Agriculture Productivity View. Load the carto.avp Palette into ArcView. This palette contains transparent symbols which will allow placing the soybean yield theme over the corn yield theme so that both values may be observed on the same map. Select Window> Show Symbol Window from the Window pull-down. Click on the Palette symbol. Click the Load button. In the Load Palette dialog box, browse to the folder containing the palettes. On most systems, the path is: \esri\av_gis30\arcview\symbols Select the carto.avp palette. Click OK. Create Low, Medium, and High categories for Soybeans as you did with Corn. Use transparent symbols from the carto palette as the symbols in this theme. Make sure to select distinctive hatch patterns for each value. You may want to set the foreground color for the hatches to black to insure that they stand out. Your legend editor should look similar to the one below.
Apply this legend. Rename the theme Soybean Yield 6. Creating an Agriculture Productivity map for the Conservation Parcel. Create a new layout from the Project Window. Click the Layout icon. Click New. A new layout (layout 2) window will open. Resize this window using a double arrow on the corner so that you can see what you are doing. Click the View Frame button. Click in the layout area of Layout 2. Stretch a window to show the view extents make sure not to go outside of the print area.
Print area border, won t print outside of this. In the dialog box that opens, select Agriculture Productivity as the desired view.
The window you stretched will fill with the view. Select the Legend Frame button: Stretch a Legend window in the lower left corner of Layout 2. Place the legend window in this area. Select the Agriculture Productivity view frame. Select OK.
Place a legend on the map. Click the legend button Drag a legend window just below the view image. When the Scale bar dialog box opens, apply the following settings Click OK Creating a Title and Compass Rose for the map. When creating a series of maps for the same project, certain things can be done to increase the professionalism of the presentation. The following techniques will help you keep the style of font, compass rose, and other elements of a map constant from layout to layout. From the Project Window Open Layout 1. Use the selection pointer to select the Title on this map. It will be framed by small squares on each corner when selected.
On your keyboard, hold the Ctrl button down and tap the C key. Make Layout 2 active. (Click on it) When Layout 2 is active, press Ctrl and V on your keyboard. The title from Layout 1 will be placed in Layout 2. You may have to move your view down to see the title. Double Click on the title in Layout 2, opening the Text Properties dialog box. In the Text Properties remove Location. Return (Enter) to move down a line and enter Agriculture Productivity. TO Click OK to apply the changes. Use the same technique to copy the compass rose from Layout 1 to Layout 2. Creating a Wetland Classification Map. Wetland classification is an important part of conservation and land restoration planning. Modern Agriculture has frequently changed the nature of the land so that areas originally wetlands have been drained and farmed. When land is to be restored to closer to it presettlement status, soil maps can be valuable tools in identifying wetlands. The data prepared for you includes a table that ranks the suitability of the soils for wetland plants. This table will be used in creating a wetland map. 1. Create a new view. Name this view Wetland Suitability Set the Map Units to Decimal degrees Set the Distance Units to Miles 2. Copy the Parcel_soil theme into this view.
3. Open the wetland table. 4. Join the wetland table to the attributes of Parcel_soil. 5. Use the legend editor to rank the Wetland Suitability based upon the suitability for wetland plants as Good, Fair, and Poor. The field to use is wlwetplant. 6. Create a third layout. Title this layout as: Conservation Parcel Wetland Plant Suitability Dekalb Co. Illinois Place a legend in the lower left corner as on the previous maps. Place the same compass rose found on the other maps on this one. Finishing the project Each map should have references on it. This should include the following information: a. the project name
b. the author c. the date. 1. Open the first layout (Layout 1) 2. User the Text button to open the text dialog box. 3. Enter the following in the Text dialog box. ArcView Project Conservation Parcel Dekalb Co. IL By: (your name) Date: (today s date) 4. Click OK. Place the text in the lower center of the layout. 5. Copy this same text to a similar location on each layout. Print all three maps and hand them in.
Bonus problems: 1. Aerial photographs (MrSid format) are included in the Aerial folder. Use the aerial photographs as backgrounds for a soils map of the parcel. Label the soils with the musym field. 2. The prospective owner would like to build an information center and meeting facility on the parcel. The parcel is bounded by roads to the West and South. Show the suitability of the soils within 100 yards of the roads for buildings with a basement and for a septic systems. (Hint: look for the following fields:engdwbll, and Engsafll) 3. Make a map of the parcel with a ½ mile area around the parcel. Label the roads which appear on this map.
