1 DOCUMENT NUMBER M Getting Started with RSL10 RSL10 is an ultra-low-power, multi-protocol 2.4 GHz radio designed for use in wireless devices that demand low power consumption and a restricted size. The RSL10 Evaluation and Development Kit (EDK) includes the hardware, firmware, software and documentation needed to evaluate this chip and develop applications for RSL10. This document explains how to install the RSL10 EDK software, connect the hardware, and points you to more information to start using this product. 1. INSTALLING THE RSL10 EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT KIT SOFTWARE 1.1 Prerequisite Software Install Java by running jre-7u80-windows-i586 (or another suitable install for Java with at least version 6.xx of Java). Install Make 3.81 by running make-3.81.exe which you can download from gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/downlinks/make.php (subject to change). Install rm through GNU tools: coreutils exe (subject to change). Install J-Link drivers. They are available from the Segger website: JLink_Windows_V610g.exe. 1.2 Installation Procedure 1. Install the RSL10 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) by running RSL10_EDK_Installer.msi. 2. Add the directory containing rm and make to the path environment variable via Windows Control Panel. 2. CONNECTING THE HARDWARE 2.1 Required Hardware RSL10 Evaluation and Development Board USB to Micro-USB cable J-Link Base adapter (Optional) Computer running Windows Connecting the Hardware To connect the Evaluation and Development Board to a computer: 1. Check the jumper position. To use the USB to power up the board and use the onboard J-Link function, the jumper position on header P6, P7, P8 and P11 are configured as shown in Figure 1. Jumper on pins 1 and 2 of P6, jumper on P7, jumper on pins 1 and 2 on P8, and connect VDDO and VBAT_DUT on P11. 1

2 Getting Started with RSL10 Figure 1. RSL10 Evaluation and Development Board 2. Once the jumpers are in the right position, you can plug the micro USB cable into the socket on the board. The dual color LED close to the USB connector flashes green during the first time plugging in, and the Windows system notifies you to promote the driver installation. If the J-Link driver was installed properly Section 1.2, Installation Procedure on page 1, the driver is automatically installed after first plug in.once the J-Link driver successfully installed, the LED turns a steady green. 3. Verify the J-Link driver installation, To verify the correct installation of the driver, disconnect and reconnect J-Link to the USB port. During the enumeration process, which takes about two seconds, the dual color LED is flashing green. After successful enumeration, the LED stays on permanently. In addition, you can verify the driver installation by consulting the Windows device manager. If the driver is installed and your J-Link is connected to the host, the device manager lists the J-Link USB driver as a node below Universal Serial Bus controllers as shown in Figure 2. Right-click on the driver to open a context menu which contains Properties. If you select Properties, a J-Link driver Properties dialog box opens (as shown in Figure 3) and reports: This device is working properly. 2

BUILDING YOUR FIRST SAMPLE APPLICATION (LOW-POWER BLINKY) This section guides you through importing your first sample application and making the LEDs blink on the evaluation and development board with low power sleep. The following procedure assumes you have installed the EDK and started the IDE using the Windows Start menu > ON Semiconductor > RSL10 EDK IDE. 3.1 Import the Sample Code To import the sleep_ram_retention (Blinky) sample code: 1. Click on the File menu item and select Import. An import dialog opens. 2. Select the General folder and click on Existing Projects into Workspace as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4. Importing an Existing Project 3. Click Next and the Import Projects dialog appears. To keep all changes to a project that you created from sample code, enable the Copy projects into workspace check box as shown in Figure 5. The entire sample code project is copied into your local workspace so that changes are not over-written if the RSL10 EDK is re-installed, repaired or updated. 4

5 ON Semiconductor Figure 5. Import Projects Dialog Box 4. Browse to the folder sleep_ram_retention as shown in Figure 6 and click OK. The sample code is in the RSL10 EDK installation directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\on Semiconductor\RSL10 EDK by default) under source\samples. 5

6 Getting Started with RSL10 Figure 6. Select a Project to Import 5. On the Import Projects dialog, click Finish. This creates a new project in your workspace called sleep_ram_retention. The project appears in the left side of Project Explorer as shown in Figure 7. Figure 7. Newly Imported Project 3.2 Build the Sample Code Before the sample application can do anything, an executable file must be built: 1. Right click on the folder for sleep_ram_retention and click Build Project as shown in Figure 8. 6

When the build is running, the output of the build is shown in the Eclipse C/C++ Development Tooling (CDT) Build Console as illustrated in Figure 9 Figure 9. Example of Build Output 3. The key resulting output in Project Explorer includes: Sleep_RAM_retention.hex: HEX file for loading into Flash Sleep_RAM_retention.elf: ARM executable file, run from RAM, used for debugging Sleep_RAM_retention.map: map file of the sections and memory usage These files are shown in Figure 10. 7

Set up the Flash Loader as an external tool by selecting Run > External Tools > External Tools Configurations from the menu as shown in Figure 11. Figure 11. Setting Up the Flash Loader as an External Tool 2. On the External Tools Configurations dialog, select Program, right-click, and select New. 3. In the New Configuration dialog, enter the values for the Flash Loader as shown in Figure 12. 8

On the Build tab, de-select the Build before launch option, so that the projects in the workspace are not built each time you run the flash loader. 5. Click the Run button, and the flash loader dialog appears as shown in Figure 13. Figure 13. Flash Loader Dialog 6. Click on Browse and navigate to the location of the sleep_ram_retention.hex file (located under the Debug folder in the project). Open the.hex file in the flash loader. 7. Click Program to program the.hex file into flash memory on the evaluation and development board. If it is successful, no errors are reported for programming or verification on the window as shown in Figure 14. 9

Progress and Message Dialog for Flash Loader 3.4 Debugging the Sample Code (Debugging with the.elf File) If you have done the previous sections, you are free to debug the application using the.elf file as follows: 1. Within the Project Explorer, right-click on the sleep_ram_retention.elf file select Debug As > Debug Configurations 2. When the Debug Configurations Dialog appears, right-click on GDB SEGGER J-Link Debugging and select New. A new configuration for sleep_ram_retention appears under the GDB SEGGER heading with a new configuration in the right side panel. 3. Using the values found in the RSL10 Software Development Tools User s Guide in Creating an ARM Cortex -M3 Core Debug Configuration and Launching a Debug Session, adjust the following values for your configuration: a. Change to the Debugger tab, and enter Cortex-M3 in the Device field b. Change to the Startup tab, add the Run Command set $sp=0x as shown in Figure 45 on page 54, and uncheck Enable semihosting. Ensure that all of the following are unchecked: Initial Reset and Halt Enable semihosting Set program counter at (hex) Pre-run reset and halt 4. Once the updates to the configuration are completed, make sure the evaluation and development board is connected to the PC via a micro USB cable and click Debug. The.elf file is placed into RAM. 5. Eclipse asks if you would like to open the Debug perspective. Answer yes and click on Remember my decision so that the question is not asked again. The Debug perspective opens and the application runs up to the first entry in main as shown in Figure

Clicking on the Resume button (the toolbar button with the small green triangle) continues running the sleep_ram_retention application from the beginning of main. If you watch the evaluation and development board, you will see the DIO 6 LED blink for 1 second every 16 seconds. Remember that once the application goes to deep sleep, you lose your JTAG connection, so it will look like the evaluation and development board has reset from the debugging perspective. You can also run the application from flash memory by simply using the flash loader to program the application to flash memory, and then resetting the board. 4. KNOWN ISSUES 4.1 Flash copier comparison error when next address points outside memory area When verifying that an area of memory is the expected value, the flash copier indicates an error occurred if the next address to compare points to an area outside of memory. To work around this issue, instead of relying on the FLASH_COPY_CTRL_ERROR bit, a user application can verify that FLASH_COPY_SRC_ADDR_PTR points to the address one further than the last address that should have been checked. If this FLASH_COPY_SRC_ADDR_PTR is set to this value, the comparison succeeded; if not, the comparison points to the first word that failed the comparison. [COL-833] 4.2 LPDSP32 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) initialization copies too much LPDSP32 is initialized using a flash copy which is mis-sized for the data to be loaded to the DSP s data memories. This can cause failures in RF traffic when the RF Front-End or Bluetooth low energy baseband is initialized prior to completing initialization of the LPDSP32 DSP. To work around this issue, initialize the LPDSP32 DSP data memories prior to initializing the Bluetooth low energy baseband. [COL-1105] 11

12 Getting Started with RSL Builder settings for LPDSP32 elf conversion tool missing from sample code The builder settings for the Convert_Elf_to_C.exe program do not exist in the sample applications. To add the Convert_Elf_to_C builder, open the.project file in the project root and place the following XML code right after the first <buildspec> tag (making it the top builder in the list). <buildcommand> <name>org.eclipse.ui.externaltools.externaltoolbuilder</name> <triggers>auto,full,incremental,</triggers> <arguments> <dictionary> <key>launchconfighandle</key> <value><project>/.externaltoolbuilders/convert Elf to C.launch</value> </dictionary> </arguments> </buildcommand> The managedbuilder.core.genmakebuilder will be the next builder in the settings. [COL-1126] 4.4 The supplemental calibration sample code does not write to NVR3 flash memory on CID 101 boards The Supplemental_Calibrate sample code calibrates the power and clocks, but does not write to non-volatile flash memory 3 (NVR3) on evaluation and development boards with chip ID (CID) 101. Currently, we do not have a work around for this issue. [COL-1150] 4.5 The supplemental calibration sample code debug library is missing for CID 8102 If you are using an evaluation and development board with chip ID (CID) 8102, the Supplemental_Calibrate sample code requires a change to the project properties in the Debug8102 build configuration. Change the library search location from ${eclipse_home}..\libs\debug to ${eclipse_home}..\libs\debug8102 to use the CID 8102 compatible library files. [COL-1153] 5. MORE INFORMATION For more information about using the IDE, sample code and libraries, see the RSL10 Software Development Tools User s Guide. Specifically, look for: 1. Using the Integrated Development Environment for information about importing a sample application and building it, along with build configuration information. 2. Running and Debugging to find out how to run and debug code on RSL10. All the documentation included in the RSL10 EDK is: Getting Started with RSL10 A short guide that provides installation instructions and basic information to connect the hardware to your computer so that you can start using the RSL10 Evaluation and Development Kit. RSL10 Software Development Tools User's Guide How to use the tools provided by the Integrated Development Environment (IDE): editor, integrated source code builder, integrated debugger and online help. 12

13 ON Semiconductor RSL10 Stand-Alone Flash Loader Manual Describes how to configure and use the stand-alone flash loader, which can program, erase and read flash memory in RSL10. RSL10 Hardware Reference Describes all the functional features provided by the RSL10 SoC, including how they can be used and how they are configured. This manual is a good place to start when you are designing real-time implementations of your algorithms or planning a product based on the RSL10 SoC. RSL10 Evaluation and Development Board Manual A reference manual that provides detailed information on the configuration and use of the RSL10 Evaluation and Development Board. When you use this board with the EDK, you can test and measure the performance and capabilities of the RSL10 SoC. RSL10 Firmware Reference The system firmware provides functionality that isolates you from the hardware or implements complex but common tasks, making it easier to support and maintain your code. The Bluetooth firmware provides an implementation of the Bluetooth host, controller, and profiles supporting standards compliant use of these components within your application. This manual provides a reference to both sets of firmware features and how they can assist with the development of your applications. ARM and Thumb-2 Instruction Set Quick Reference Card From the ARM company, this quick reference card provides a short-hand list of instructions for the ARM Cortex-M3 processor.
