20 Getting started with TechComplete Test Productivity Pack One of the first things you probably want to do with TechComplete Test Productivity Pack is to add meters to your inventory in the Manage Meter Assets section. After you build an inventory of meters to be managed using this software, you'll create, edit, and deploy channel plans and limit plans to be used by these meters. If you are ready to add your first meter, exit the Help system now and click the Add icon on the Table Toolbar of the Meter Asset Table on the Manage Meter Assets home page to proceed to the Add a meter to your inventory page. If you are not sure how to execute these tasks, an extensive Help system is built into TechComplete Test Productivity Pack to assist you. Each page of your TechComplete Test Productivity Pack software is supported by a Help Text View and a Help Graphic View. These views explain how each page functions and show page components with helpful annotations. The Help system is explained in greater detail below. Here are five Help options to assist you in getting started with TechComplete Test Productivity Pack. Choose the type of Help that best fits your needs at this time: 1) Click here to learn about the Manage Meter Assets home page or 2) Click here to learn about adding a meter to your inventory or 3) Click here to learn about the functions and features of TechComplete Test Productivity Pack or 4) Click here to learn how to connect DSAM meters for synchronization or 5) Find out more about the Help system by reviewing the section below: Using the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Help system Accessing the Help System From any TechComplete Test Productivity Pack location, you can access the Help system in one of three ways: by pressing the F1 function key on your keyboard by clicking the Help icon on the Navigation Toolbar by clicking the Help option on the Menu Bar, or Navigation Toolbar Help Icon Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 2

21 Menu Bar Help Option Help Text Views and Graphic Views When you access Help, a Help Text View appears in a separate window (which can be sized and moved on your screen to allow direct reference while you also view your TechComplete Test Productivity Pack software). The subject of the Help Text View corresponds to the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack page you are viewing when you access Help. A link at the top of most text views allows you to also access a Graphic View of Help for that subject or page. Red annotations on the Graphic View identify key areas of interest on the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack page. Help Navigation and Printing Use the four buttons on the Help Toolbar to move perform the following Help-related operations: Previous - return to the previously-viewed Help page (back) Next - move to the next Help page (forward, after going back) Print - print the currently-viewed Help page Page Setup - choose page setup options prior to printing (Help pages) Help Toolbar You also can move from page to page in Help easily by clicking TechComplete Test Productivity Pack page topics in the Help Table of Contents (a portion of this is shown below). 22 Help Table of Contents Searching Help Using Key Words By typing Alt-HS on your keyboard (or by using the Menu Bar shown above), you can access the Help Search feature, allowing you to enter a key word or phrase in the space provided (the Find: box) to locate indexed topics in the Help system. Press Enter after you type your entry. When you enter what is likely to be a frequently-used key word for this type of software (such as "configure"), press the Enter key (repeatedly) to scroll through the available Index topics using that word. This will display (on the Right Panel) the Help pages associated with those index topics. If your key word or phrase does not match an Index entry, no page for that word or phrase will be displayed. Should this occur, try an alternate or related word or phrase (or directly browse the Index or Table of Contents to locate the page you desire). Example: The word "glossary" is not indexed, but the word "icons" is in the index. So, if you type "glossary" in the Find: box, the Icon Glossary is not displayed on the Right Panel - but entering "icon" or "icons" will get you there. And remember: You also can use the vertical scroll bar on the right side of the Index to locate and select the word "Icons" or use the Table of Contents to locate and select "Icon Glossary" to achieve the same result. 23 Connections and windows configuration (Text View) Additional "Welcome" topics Part 1: Connections Choosing a Meter Setup for TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Synchronization (DSAM firmware versions 2.0 and later) JDSU's DSAM meters have their own Ethernet or RF settings that allow them to be uniquely identified on the network. There are three synchronization connection options for your DSAM meters - Ethernet connection to a LAN, RF connection to a LAN, or direct Ethernet connection to your PC. Option 1) Ethernet Connection to a LAN with a Domain Host Controller Your PC must have a static IP address. The DSAM can obtain a dynamic IP address from the DHCP Server or have a static IP address. On the meter, enter the DSAM IP address under Configure>General>Ethernet Network. Choose "DHCP" for a dynamic IP address or "Let me specify below" for a static address. If "DHCP" is selected, no further DSAM IP configuration is required. If "Let me specify below" is selected, enter the correct static IP address and subnet mask in the space provided. (See your System Administrator, if necessary, to obtain these.) Under Configure>Access>PC Connection, enter the PC IP address (To obtain the IP address for meter synchronization, display the About JDSU TechComplete Test Productivity Pack dialog box using the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Help>About JDSU TechComplete Test Productivity Pack menu item.) and select Ethernet as your preferred connection. Option 2) RF Connection to a LAN with a Domain Host Controller Your PC must have a static IP address. The DSAM can obtain a dynamic IP address from the DHCP Server or have a static IP address. On the meter, enter the DSAM IP address under Configure>General>RF Network. Choose "DHCP" for a dynamic IP address or "Let me specify below" for a static address. If "DHCP" is selected, no further DSAM IP configuration is required. If "Let me specify below" is selected, enter the correct static IP address and subnet mask in the space provided. (See your System Administrator, if necessary, to obtain these.) Under Configure>Access>PC Connection, enter the PC IP address (To obtain the IP address for meter synchronization, display the About JDSU TechComplete Test Productivity Pack dialog box using the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Help>About JDSU TechComplete Test Productivity Pack menu item.) and select RF as your preferred connection. Option 3) Direct Ethernet Connection using a Cross-over Cable Your PC and DSAM must have a static IP address with the same subnet mask. The first three groups of numbers in the IP address should match. (For example if a PC's IP Address is and Subnet Mask is , then the DSAMs static IP should be xxx and Subnet Mask should be ) Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 5

24 On the meter, enter the DSAM IP address under Configure>General>Ethernet Network. Enter the correct static IP address and subnet mask in the space provided. (See your System Administrator, if necessary, to obtain these.) 50 Administer SNMP community strings Use this page to define (and to deploy to meters in your inventory) up to four SNMP read community strings. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) read community strings are used as passwords to gain read-only access to the Management Information Base (MIB) of the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). A valid SNMP read community string is necessary for DSAMs (Version 2.0 or later) in your meter inventory to perform certain DOCSIS measurements. In addition to providing loop packet loss measurements, DSAM meters equipped with SNMP read community strings will be able to perform separate upstream and downstream packet loss measurements and a signal-to-noise measurement on the upstream path. To accommodate tests on more than one CMTS device, the DSAM is capable of sequencing through up to four read community strings. Right Panel To define each SNMP read community string, enter up to 32 alphanumeric characters in each edit box on this page. Each character will be displayed as an asterisk (*) when you enter it. When you have defined or edited these strings, press the Done button at the bottom of the page to save them on this page and deploy them to all DSAMs currently in your TechComplete Test Productivity Pack inventory. This deployment will occur upon the next synchronization of each meter, and meters added to your inventory in the future will automatically receive the strings upon their initial synchronization. NOTE: Because SNMP community strings are universal settings for all DSAMs in your TechComplete Test Productivity Pack meter inventory, when you click the Done button all meters in the table on the Manage Meter Assets page will indicate that synchronization is required. NOTE: For security purposes, SNMP read community strings that are deployed to DSAMs are not editable or viewable by DSAM users. Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 32

Meter Details Details about the meter selected (on the right panel) are displayed on three tabs at the bottom of the left panel. Click the tab you would like to view. Move the scroll bar (when displayed) to view the entire contents of the tab. The Summary tab and Options tab are read-only. The Comments tab provides space to enter up to 255 alphanumeric characters of information. This information is not synchronized to the meter itself; it remains solely on TechComplete Test Productivity Pack. Right Panel Use this page to assign the selected meter by entering (or editing) the employee name and employee identification number and by choosing a limit plan and active channel plan for the meter. The serial number of the meter you are assigning is shown in the box directly below the page title. To assign the meter, follow these three steps: 1) Enter the employee name and ID number (using up to 32 alphanumeric characters for each) in the boxes provided. Click the (Step 1) checkbox to select or deselect the PIN (personal identification number) option. When the box is checked, the meter user will be required to enter a valid PIN prior to entering (editing) this operator information on the meter. 2) (This step is optional.) Click the checkbox to select or deselect the PIN (personal identification number) option. When the box is checked, the meter user will be required to enter a valid PIN prior to selecting the active channel plan. Checking this box also enables the drop-down box listing all channel plans stored on the meter. From this list, click on the plan of your choice. 3) Select the active limit plan by clicking the drop-down box on the page in Step 3 and by clicking on the limit plan of your choice. About the Active Limit Plan in Relation to Plans in the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Repository The meter's active limit plan (Step 3) can compare to plans in the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack repository in one of three ways: 1) It can be identical to a plan in the repository with the same name (when the plan has not been edited on the meter and matches the repository plan) 2) It can be different from the plan in the repository (because it has been edited on TechComplete Test Productivity Pack and not re-deployed upon synchronization or because it has been edited on the meter) 3) It can exist only on the meter and not in the repository (because the plan with the same name was deleted from the repository). 58 To properly interpret the condition of the active plan in relation to those in the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack repository, it is important to read the drop-down box in Step 3 correctly. 59 About the Active Limit Plan in Relation to Plans in the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack Repository How to Read the Drop-Down Box in Step 3 on the Assign This Meter page: The meter's active limit plan (Step 3) can compare to plans in the TechComplete Test Productivity Pack repository in one of three ways: 1) The meter's limit plan can be identical to a plan in the repository with the same name (when the plan has not been edited on the meter and matches the repository plan). The Default LP shown below in the top box (with the drop-down arrow) is identical to the one with the same name in the repository. Plans in the repository are shown in the bottom box. 2) The meter's limit plan can be different from the plan in the repository (because it has been edited on TechComplete Test Productivity Pack and not re-deployed upon synchronization or because it has been edited on the meter). The Default LP shown below in the top box (with the drop-down arrow) is different from the one with the same name in the repository. Two things indicate this - an asterisk next to the plan name in the top box and the same plan name repeated with and without an asterisk in the bottom box. 3) The meter's limit plan can exist only on the meter and not in the repository (because the plan with the same name was deleted from the repository). The Default LP shown below in the top box (with the drop-down arrow) does not exist in the repository. Two things indicate this - an asterisk next to the plan name in the top box and the same plan name repeated with an asterisk in the bottom box but without the name listed again without an asterisk. Although plans in the repository are shown in the bottom box, the meter's active plan (which is listed in the bottom box as well with an asterisk) is not Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 41

60 currently in the repository. (You may add this plan to the repository by archiving it on the Archive Meter Files page. This drop-down box will then resemble the condition of the first scenario shown above.) Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 42

81 Administer SNMP community strings Use this page to define (and to deploy to meters in your inventory) up to four SNMP read community strings. Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 63

Simply click the Import icon on the Table Toolbar and select.pln on the Files of Type drop-down box. Then browse to locate your Stealthware channel plan and double-click it to complete the import. WARNING: Stealthware channel plans created without a template cannot be imported by FDM/TPP. Stealthware channel plans can be created by choosing a template (like PAL-IRE or PAK-GERMANY) which fills in channels or by just picking a video format (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM). When no template is specified, it cannot be imported by FDM/TPP, instead it gets an error dialog with the following text: "Could not import the channel plan. The file is not compatible with this application or has been corrupted." Files with this problem will have a blank line 15. Identifying StealthWare Version 13 Channel Plans If you are uncertain about the version of the StealthWare channel plan you intend to import, you can easily confirm its version using Notepad. Using Windows Explorer, locate the StealthWare folder ("Stlware") and, under that folder, the channel plans folder typically called "plan." Use Notepad to open the plan file and look for version number 13 as shown below: Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 72

91 NOTE: Before importing a StealthWare channel plan into TechComplete Test Productivity Pack, make sure that the channel plan has an SDA/Stealth target when viewed in the StealthWare channel plan editor. If the StealthWare channel plan has a target of CLI, for example, simply change the target to SDA/Stealth and save the channel plan under a separate file name. Then you can import the edited plan into TechComplete Test Productivity Pack. Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 73

138 View DOCSIS Range file Use this page to view a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) measurement Range file from the selected meter. A DOCSIS Range (only) file is saved on a meter when DOCSIS ranging was the only task attempted or when ranging and registration were attempted but registration did not occur. NOTE: When packet loss, throughput, or ping tests are saved on a meter, the associated range and registration information is saved in the file as well. The Range and Registration tabs are available for viewing on the View DOCSIS Ping File page, the View DOCSIS Throughput File page, and the View DOCSIS Packet Loss File page. DOCSIS measurement mode analyzes the digital performance of user-selected DOCSIS channels to verify downstream/upstream connectivity. Only DOCSIS channels defined in the downstream (forward path) channel plan are available for DOCSIS measurement testing. When a DOCSIS channel is selected for testing, the meter automatically searches for that channel, acquires upstream channel data, conducts ranging with the CMTS, and displays detailed test results. DOCSIS measurements include performance data on the upstream signal level and on the downstream signal level, downstream modulation error ratio (MER) (or EVM, as configured), and estimated downstream bit error rate (BER) before and after forward error correction (FEC) along QAM sensitivity and AGC Stress measurements. This data can be viewed in relation to userconfigured limits to determine the Pass/Fail status of the DOCSIS channel. Left Panel Overall Limit-Set Status The overall limit-set status for this measurement file is displayed directly under the page title (View DOCSIS Range File). The first line of text indicates the type of limit set that was enabled at the time the file was saved on the meter. The next line shows an overall status of Pass, Fail, Limits Off, or a question-mark icon followed by a blank space (which appears when a limit set was selected but the measurement results were indeterminate). NOTE: If any of the DOCSIS measurements did not fall within the range of the selected limit set when the file was saved, the overall result shown in this section will be Fail. See the Right Panel for more information. File Details Four read-only tabs at the bottom of the Left Panel display details about this DOCSIS file. Click the tab you would like to view. Move the scroll bar (when displayed) to view the entire contents of the tab. 142 View DOCSIS throughput file Use this page to view a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) measurement Throughput file from the selected meter. This test measures the speed at which a file can be downloaded from a web server. If the meter's throughput configuration points to a server on the same IP network as the CMTS, the downstream throughput will display the maximum speed the customer is capable of receiving. Anything less may indicate network issues such as high traffic on the downstream channel or a slow server. Downstream throughput will decrease drastically if the meter is configured to download from a server out on the Internet. The cable modem service provider may have a fast connection to the Internet backbone, but the server from which the meter downloads may have a slow connection. The server itself could also be the bottleneck. It could be heavily loaded by requests from other users, or it might be an inefficient server. Three tabs - Range, Registration, and Throughput - are available for viewing on this page. When a throughput test is saved on a meter, the associated range and registration information is saved in the file as well. The system will default to the Throughput tab when a throughput file is viewed. Range tab information includes upstream and downstream ranging performance data. Registration tab information includes the MAC addresses used to register and the network and modem assignments. Throughput tab information is discussed below. 144 View DOCSIS Packet Loss file Use this page to view a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) measurement Packet Loss file from the selected meter. Packet loss testing can help verify that an IP performance issue is not due to packet discards in the network. This test sends pings to the CMTS and counts replies. The loop packet loss is the count of pings that did not get a reply. A basic packet loss test provides loop results for packets sent, packets lost, and the resulting sent/lost ratio (loss ratio = number lost / number sent). Three tabs - Range, Registration, and Packet Loss - are available for viewing on this page. When a packet loss test is saved on a meter, the associated range and registration information is saved in the file as well. The system will default to the Packet Loss tab when a packet loss file is viewed. Range tab information includes upstream and downstream ranging performance data. Registration tab information includes the MAC addresses used to register and the network and modem assignments. Packet Loss tab information is discussed below. Left Panel File Details Four read-only tabs at the bottom of the Left Panel display details about this DOCSIS file. Click the tab you would like to view. DOCSIS Packet Loss Test Results The Packet Loss tab provides the following information: Packet Loss The packet loss table displays measurement data indicating the number of packets sent upstream, downstream, and round trip (loop) the number of packets lost in each of these categories, and Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 126

145 the ratio (expressed as a percent) in each category of packets lost to those sent. NOTE: When the SNMP read community string is not provided, upstream and downstream numeric values are replaced with gray dashes. Upstream Modulation When the SNMP read community string is provided, the upstream signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is displayed. This value is received from the CMTS MIB and is the last reported value contained in the MIB. Error Conditions: One of two error messages may be displayed when insufficient or incorrect information regarding SNMP read community strings prohibit complete packet loss measurements. Error condition #1: "Some values are not available because the SNMP read community strings were not configured for this meter." This message is displayed when no SNMP read community strings have been provided to the meter supplying this measurement file. For the meter to measure upstream and downstream packet loss, a valid SNMP read community string must be provided to the meter using TechComplete Test Productivity Pack. (See Help topic for Administer SNMP community strings.) Error condition #2: "Some values are not available because statistics were not provided by the CMTS." This message is displayed when none of the SNMP read community strings provided to the meter supplying this measurement file are valid for the intended CMTS. A valid SNMP read community string on the meter is one that matches the community string of the CMTS providing this measurement data. (See Help topic for Administer SNMP community strings.) 146 View DOCSIS Ping file Use this page to view a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) measurement Ping file from the selected meter. The ping test can verify connectivity to any address on the Internet, showing how much delay exists between the meter and the destination address. It can be used as a bidirectional throughput test or round-trip packet loss test between the meter and any other device on the Internet. Three tabs - Range, Registration, and Ping - are available for viewing on this page. When a ping test is saved on a meter, the associated range and registration information is saved in the file as well. The system will default to the Ping tab when a ping file is viewed. Range tab information includes upstream and downstream ranging performance data. Registration tab information includes the MAC addresses used to register and the network and modem assignments. Ping tab information is discussed below. Left Panel File Details Four read-only tabs at the bottom of the Left Panel display details about this DOCSIS file. Click the tab you would like to view. Move the scroll bar (when displayed) to view the entire contents of the tab. Right Panel When the Ping tab is selected on the Right Panel, three toolbar options are available on the Test Results Toolbar. When the menu of options appears, click the option of your choice. DOCSIS Ping Test Results The Ping tab provides the following information: Parameters IP address - the configured IP address Packet size - the packet size in bytes (possible values: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, or 1518) Time between pings - time between pings in milliseconds or seconds as configured (possible values: 0, 10 ms, 25 ms, 50 ms, 100 ms, 1 sec, 2 sec, or 5 sec) Reply Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 128

147 The last six ping replies (with the most recent reply displayed on the top line). The round trip time and time-to-live (TTL) are displayed for each ping reply. "No response" will be displayed when there is no reply for the ping destination. NOTE: The reply time is the total time needed for the ping to go from the meter to the ping destination, for it to generate a reply, and for that reply to come back to the meter. A lot of variation in reply time is normal because the pings are not synchronized with the DOCSIS system's channel slot timing, and because of varying loads on the ping destination machine. The average response time is a good indicator of the delays between the meter and the ping destination. The TTL (time to live) value does not actually measure time. Its shows how many routers the ping reply had to pass through before it reached the meter. The ping destination (such as a router or a PC) sets the TTL in the ping reply to 64, 128, or 255 when it creates the reply. Each router that forwards the message decrements that value. For example, if the meter shows TTL = 56 and it started at 64, eight routers had to forward the reply from the ping destination back to the meter. The TTL typically does not decrease by more than 50 from its initial value. Statistics Packets sent - the number of packets sent Packets lost - the number of packets lost Ratio - the ratio of packets sent to packets lost Average response time - the average response time (round trip) Copyright 2008 JDSU, LLC 129
