5 Introduction Online education is becoming more and more popular at Kennesaw State University. When instructors use video, this can greatly increase learning for the students enrolled in an online course. Videos also create a more engaging instructional environment. Panopto is a great tool for the online student because it is allows you to view videos for your class. Panopto also allows you to create a presentation that you can submit to your professor. This document will show you how to create and submit a presentation to your instructor. Objectives The following objectives are covered in this document: Downloading the Panopto recorder Understanding and having the ability to use the Panopto recorder Knowing how to create a recording Being able to edit recordings Revised 6/20/14 5 of 33

6 Items Needed for Panopto You will need the following items to use Panopto: A computer with the Windows or Macintosh operating system. This document will show you how to use Panopto on the Macintosh computer. A microphone attached to your computer to capture your voice. A camera attached to your computer is recommended. If you do not want to use a camera to record yourself, a camera is not required. o Those who do not use a camera during a recording will capture either the computer screen or the PowerPoint presentation during the session. 7 Downloading the Panopto Recorder To create a presentation for your class, you will need to download the Panopto recorder to your Mac. The following instructions explain how to obtain this software. These instructions are written using the Safari browser. To precisely follow the directions below, you are encouraged to use the Safari browser as well. 1. Go to the following website: coursecapture.kennesaw.edu 2. Next, click the Sign In button after entering your Net ID and Password (see Figure 1). Figure 1 Sign In 3. Click Download Recorder (see Figure 2). Figure 2 Download Recorder 4. Next, click Download Installer for OSX Intel (see Figure 3 on the next page). Revised 6/20/14 7 of 33

8 Figure 3 Download Installer 5. The file will be moved to the Downloads folder. To access the file, click the Downloads button once (see Figure 4). Figure 4 Downloads button 6. Double-click Panopto Recorder (see Figure 5). Figure 5 - Downloads Revised 6/20/14 8 of 33

9 7. The Install Panopto window will appear. Click Continue (see Figure 6). 8. Next, click Install (see Figure 7). Figure 6 Install Panopto Figure 7 Install Panopto 9. If the Password window appears, enter the Username and Password and click OK (see Figure 8 on the next page). Revised 6/20/14 9 of 33

10 Figure 8 Username and Password 10. The software will install on your computer. Upon completion, a window will appear indicating that the installation was successful (see Figure 9). Click the Close button. Figure 9 Install complete 11. Close the Download Recorder window in your browser by clicking the X in the upper-right corner of the window. 12. Close the Panopto website by following the instructions below: a. Click on your name which will be located in the upper-right area of the window (see Figure 10 on the next page). Figure 11 Logout button Accessing the Recorder The following instructions explain how to access the recorder on your computer. 1. From the menu options at the top-left corner of your desktop, click Go (see Figure 12). 2. In the menu that appears, select Applications (see Figure 12). 12 3. In the Applications window, select Panopto Recorder (see Figure 13). Figure 13 Panopto Recorder 4. The Panopto Recorder window will appear. Click the Login button in the upper-right area of the window. In the window that appears, enter the information below. After you have entered the information, click the Login button (see Figure 13). Server: coursecapture.kennesaw.edu Login: The login should be win.kennesaw.edu followed by your username. For example, if your name is John Smith and your username is jsmith, you would enter the following: win.kennesaw.edu\jsmith Password: Enter the password that you use for all University applications. 13 5. The Panopto Recorder will appear on your screen (see Figure 15). Figure 15 Panopto Recorder An Overview of the Recorder The following is an overview of the recorder. To make a recording, you must have the Panopto recorder open (see steps 1-5 on pages 10-11). Once the recorder is open, you are ready to make your recording. To access the properties for the recorder, click the Create New Recording button (see Figure 16). NOTE: A window may appear asking if you want to enable capture support for Keynote. Click the Cancel button unless you plan to use the Keynote software during your presentation. Figure 16 Create New Recording button Audio and Video Panopto has the ability to record you during a presentation. To record audio and video, place a check to select the Record Audio/Video option (see Figure 17 on the next page). Revised 6/20/14 13 of 33

14 Figure 17 - Record Audio/Video If you have several microphones attached to your computer, you may want to change the microphone that you will use for a particular presentation. The following explains how to control the audio input for a recording. 1. Click the arrow for Audio Source (see Figure 18). Figure 18 Audio Source Revised 6/20/14 14 of 33

15 2. In the menu that appears, select the microphone that you want to use for your recording (see Figure 19). Figure 19 Audio options Panopto has the ability to record a video of the student while he or she is presenting. However, if the student does not want video to be recorded, he or she can turn the camera off and simply display a PowerPoint presentation or the desktop. The following explains how to turn off the camera that records the student. If there are multiple cameras attached to the computer, the following will show you how to change the camera. 1. Click the arrow for Video Source (see Figure 20 on the next page). Revised 6/20/14 15 of 33

17 PowerPoint and Keynote Panopto gives users the ability to display PowerPoint and Keynote presentations to viewers during a recording. To enable this feature, make certain that the option Record Keynote/PowerPoint is selected (see Figure 22). Figure 22 PowerPoint and Keynote Screen Capture Panopto also gives you the ability to display your computer screen to the viewers. To enable this feature, make certain that the option Record Screen Capture is selected (see Figure 23). With this option selected, you can display websites, documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. to your viewers, making for a more engaging presentation. 18 Making a Recording The following explains how to make a recording with Panopto. 1. Click the Create New Recording button (see Figure 24). Figure 24 Create New Recording 2. Change the name of the recording to something that is descriptive of the session, such as Unit 1 Presentation, American Literature for example (see Figure 25). Figure 25 Session Name 3. Select the folder where the recording will be saved by following the instructions below: a. Click the arrow indicated in Figure 26. Revised 6/20/14 18 of 33

19 Figure 26 Select Folder b. Click on the Drop Box that your instructor created for you to save your recording (see Figure 27). Figure 27 Choose Folder 4. You are now ready to record the presentation by pressing the Start Recording button (see Figure 28). Figure 28 Start Recording Revised 6/20/14 19 of 33

20 5. You can now use your desktop to present visuals to your viewers. You can present PowerPoint slides, websites, documents, spreadsheets, etc. 6. When you are finished with your presentation, you can click the Panopto icon on the dock to display the recorder again (see Figure 29). Figure 29 Panopto Icon in Dock 7. To temporarily pause the recording, click the Pause button. When you are ready to resume recording, press the Resume button. When you are finished recording, press the Stop button (see Figure 30). Figure 30 Stop and Pause Recording NOTE: The following keyboard shortcuts can also be used: To start and stop recording: Command + Option + R To pause and resume recording: Command + Option + P 8. The recording will begin uploading to the server. The status of the upload will appear in the lower-left area of the Panopto window (see Figure 31). Revised 6/20/14 20 of 33

22 Managing Your Recordings Panopto allows you to edit and delete your recordings. The following explains how to manage the videos that you create with Panopto. Accessing the Available Videos The following instructions explain how to access your videos. 1. Open the Panopto recorder on your desktop (see pages of this document). 2. Click the Manage Online Recordings link (see Figure 33). Figure 33 Manage Online Recordings 3. A browser window will open. Click the arrow to the left of the name of the course that you want to access, as indicated in Figure 34. Figure 34 Accessing the Video Revised 6/20/14 22 of 33

23 3. A sub-folder will now appear, which is the folder for your instructor s Drop Box. Click this Drop Box folder once as indicated in Figure 35. Figure 35 Dropbox Folder 5. Your video will appear in the browser window (see Figure 36). Figure 36 Video in Dropbox Folder Revised 6/20/14 23 of 33

24 Editing a Recording Panopto allows you to edit your recordings in the browser window. The following explains how to edit the videos that you have submitted. Opening a Video 1. When you have accessed the video in the Drop Box, allow your mouse pointer to hover over the video that you want to edit (see Figure 37). Click the Edit icon that appears (see Figure 38). 25 Deleting Video 1. To remove video at the beginning or end of the recording, allow your mouse pointer to hover over either of the handles on the timeline (see Figure 39). Figure 39 Edit Handles 2. As your mouse hovers over the handle, hold your mouse button down and drag to the location of the timeline where you want the video to start or end. The area behind the screen will no longer be seen by your viewers (see Figure 40). Figure 40 Edit Handles 3. If you want to delete a segment in the middle of the video, click the Scissors icon (see Figure 41). Revised 6/20/14 25 of 33

26 Figure 41 - Scissors 4. Place your mouse pointer at the ending area on the timeline where you want to delete and click your mouse button once. Then, place your mouse pointer at the beginning area where you want to delete and click your mouse button again (see Figure 42). Figure 42 Editing Video 5. You can now use the handles on the timeline to adjust the area of the video that you want to delete (see Figure 43). Figure 43 Editing Video Revised 6/20/14 26 of 33

27 6. To preview the video with the edits that have been made, place a check next to Preview Edits (see Figure 44). NOTE: Panopto never really deletes video. Instead, it allows you to mark areas of the video that viewers will not see. Figure 44 Preview Edits 7. Click the Play button to preview your edits (see Figure 45). Figure 45 Play button Adding a Link to an Existing Event The following explains how to add a link to another website. Your viewers will be able to click on the link and it will open in a new window. 28 1. Hover over any of the screen captions or PowerPoint slides where you would like to insert a URL link, as indicated in Figure 46. Figure 46 Add link to recording 2. As you hover over the screen caption or PowerPoint slide, a window will appear as indicated in Figure 48. Hover over the area labeled Click to edit (see Figure 47) and click once. Figure 47 Including a Link to a Website 6. In the window that appears, enter the address of the website in the text box labeled Url (see Figure 48 on the next page). It is important to enter before the website address. Revised 6/20/14 28 of 33

29 Figure 48 Including a Link to a Website 7. Click the OK button to close the Edit Event Properties window. Adding a Link to a New Event In addition to adding a link to an existing event, you can also add a new event to the timeline, which is explained in the following. 1. Click the Add a new event button in the lower-left area of the editing window, as indicated in Figure 49. Figure 49 Add a new event button Revised 6/20/14 29 of 33

30 2. Click on the area of the timeline indicated in Figure 50 where you want the event to be located. Figure 50 Adding a new event to the timeline 3. In the window that appears, enter the address of the website in the text box labeled Url (see Figure 51). It is important to enter before the website address. Figure 51 Entering the website address 3. Click the OK button to close the Edit Event Properties window. 4. The new event will appear on the timeline, as indicated in Figure 52. 31 The following explains how to save the edits that you have made. 1. To save the video with the edits that you have made, click either click the Save button or the Save As button in the top right corner of the window (see Figure 53). Figure 53 Save buttons Note: - The Save button will save your progress and allow you to continue working. A successfully saved edit session will display the message below (See Figure 54). In the window that appears, enter a new version name and click OK (See Figure 56). Figure 56 Enter Name Note: The Panopto system will give you status updates as the edits are made to your video. It may be necessary to click the Refresh button on your browser to see the most recent update. Revised 6/20/14 31 of 33

32 Deleting a Recording The following explains how to delete your video from the Drop Box. 1. Allow your mouse pointer to hover over the recording that you want to delete (see Figure 55). 2. Underneath the title of the recording, select the Delete icon (see Figure 57). Figure 57 Delete Video 3. A window will appear on your screen asking if you are sure you want to delete the recording.
