MyMediasite can be used both within and outside of Blackboard to record and publish mini lectures from your desktop, record live class lectures from a classroom computer, and upload videos from almost any device for easy sharing with your students. MyMediasite is also the required platform for uploading recorded GoToTraining Virtual Classroom sessions for students to review. Note: If you have verified your profile previously, you will not see this message and will not have to verify again Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 2
6. Upon clicking on the verification link sent, a new browser window will open prompting you to login. You do not need to login to finish the verification. Simply go back to your Blackboard course site page and click Continue to Mediasite. Downloading the Desktop Recorder The desktop recorder should be downloaded to any computer on which you wish to use MyMediasite. You can download the recorder onto multiple computers. If you would like to use MyMediasite on a classroom computer, contact The Office of Classroom Technologies to make arrangements. The steps below will guide you through the process of downloading the desktop recorder. 1. After clicking on the MyMediasite tool link within Blackboard, click on Download the Desktop Recorder to be taken to the download page Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 3
2. Click on Download Desktop Recorder for Windows (or Download for Mac) to begin your download. 3. Follow the prompts to download and install the recorder. 4. Once you have finished the install, go back to the download page and click Register Mediasite Desktop Recorder to register your software Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 4
Creating a Channel Channels are used to help organize videos. You can create channels for each course, subject, etc. Entire channels can also be shared within your Blackboard course sites. To make organization easier, a channel should be created prior to creating any videos. The steps below will walk you through the process of creating a channel. 1. Click on the plus sign (+) located to the right of My Channels. 2. Enter a channel name and click the plus sign (+) to save Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 5
Creating a Video MyMediasite allows you to create new videos that include screen capture and webcam capabilities. It is great for prerecorded lectures, software and assignment demos, intro and welcome videos, and more. MyMediasite also allows you to upload videos created in other software such as Camtasia and GoToTraining. Uploading these videos allows you to store them on a Duquesne server and share the videos with others through your Blackboard site. The steps below will walk you through the process of creating a new video and uploading an existing video. 1. Select the channel in which you wish to place the video from the My Channels list. 2. Click Create Presentation Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 6
3. Select the presentation type that you wish to create. a. If you want to record a new video, select Record Desktop. b. If you want to upload a video that you created in another program (Camtasia, GoToTraining, etc.), select Upload Media. 4. Enter a name and description (optional). 5. Verify that the channel in which you wish to place your video appears in the Publish To dropdown menu. If it doesn t, click the dropdown arrow to select it. 6. Click Launch Desktop Recorder. a. If you chose Upload Media in step 3 above, click Select Video instead. This will prompt you to browse your computer and select your video. Once you have done this, proceed to step Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 7
7. If prompted with a message similar to the one below, choose to open with the Mediasite Desktop Recorder application (it should already be the highlighted option), check the box to Remember my choice and click OK. 8. Once the desktop recorder launches, click Record Now Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 8
9. Choose your recording option (Slideshow + Video, Slideshow + Audio, Screencast + Video, or Screencast + Audio). Use the left and right arrow to move between the options and click to select. a. The Slideshow options record a new slide each time the screen changes. This option works well for recording PowerPoint presentations that DO NOT include animations. If you are recording a PowerPoint that includes animations, select the Screencast option. b. The Screencast options record a more fluid motion and are preferred to illustrate animation or to perform a demonstration. c. The Video options will record your webcam along with your computer screen. 10. After choosing your recording type, click Next Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 9
11. Choose your camera (if recording webcam video) and microphone settings. a. Click the dropdown arrows to adjust your camera size and camera and microphone input. Note: Camera options will be grayed out if you chose not to record your camera (step 9 above). b. Verify that your microphone is registering sound (indicated by the moving sound bar lights). c. If you experience issues with your microphone after selecting the proper input, click to open your computer s sound control panel. From there, you can adjust the audio. Note: This process varies between computer operating systems. 12. After you have verified your camera and microphone settings, click Next. 13. Select the desktop, window, or region that you wish to record. a. Desktop allows you to record your entire desktop. To use this option, click the dropdown arrow next to Desktop and choose the monitor that you wish to record. b. Window allows you to record the entire window of a program that you currently have open on your screen. c. Region lets you use your mouse to draw a rectangle around a specific area on your screen that you want to record. Once you make your selection, a red rectangle will appear around the area that will be recorded Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 10
14. Click the green checkmark to confirm your selection. 15. Confirm that the MDR Preview window is not in your recording area. If it is in your recording area, a warning will appear. a. If the window is in the recording area, either move it so that it is no longer in the area or uncheck the box to Show recording control panel. If you uncheck this box, be sure to note the shortcuts for pausing the recording. 16. Click Record to begin Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 11
17. A countdown from 5 will begin. When the countdown disappears from the screen, the recording has begun. 18. To pause the recording, either click the Pause button on the MDR Preview window or use the keyboard shortcut (noted in 15a above). 19. To finish your recording after pausing, click Finish Recording. The recording will begin uploading to your MyMediasite account Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 12
20. A video status window will appear. Once the recording has finished uploading, as indicated by the Status column, go back to the MyMediasite tool within your Blackboard site. 21. Your presentation may take an hour or more to process, depending upon the number and size of the videos ahead of it in the queue. You may need to refresh your browser in order to view an update on your video s status. 22. Once your video has finished processing, a preview image of the video like the one below will appear within your channel. To make your video viewable, click the dropdown arrow located next to Private and select Viewable. Note: You will still need to post the video or the channel containing the video to a content area within your Blackboard site in order for those enrolled in your site to be able to view it. Note: You can set the video to Private again in the future Sonic Foundry Inc. & Return to Table of Contents 13
