1 THE GREPLAY PROCEDURE: A VALUABLE TOOL FOR THE SAS" GRAPHICS USER Kimberly A. Mitchell, M.LE.M.S.S. c. Michael Dunbam, M.LE.M.S.S. David R. Gens, M.LE.M.S.S. ABSTRACT: Proc Greplay is a multipurpose presentation tool for creating images from information generated by SAS graphics procedures. Greplay allows the user to view and modify gmphics catalogs which contain the image producing details. The user can inodify the names and colors of graphs, select specific graphs for viewing, move graphs between catalogs, delete graphs, display more than one image per screen, and transmit image producing information to different drivers. Once the catalog is created, Greplay eliminates the need for repetitious creation of data steps and graphics procedures when multiple image visualization is necessary. The user has the option of using interactive or batch mode environment. Proc Greplay has proven to be a valuable technique for storing, modifying, and presenting SAS generated graphics display information. INTRODUCTION: The focus of this paper is to describe the techniques necessary to run Proc Greplay using the full screen environment utilizing SAS/PC Version For more information concerning advanced uses of the full screen environment and Greplay in batch mode refer to the SAS/Graph Guide. All pictures using SAS/Graph procedures are directed to catalogs which are part of the SAS data library. The catalog contains the information necessary to recreate the pictures. Since the catalog is not a SAS data set and does not contain variables, it can not be processed in a data step. Features of the catalog include concatenation of visual images, permanent or temporary storage and management of graphics catalog using Proc Greplay. The general form for graphic information storage is proc gplot data = f GOUT = a. pix ; plot a b; run; GOUT= is the name of the graphics output catalog used to store information to recreate the picture using Greplay. INITIAL PROCESSS IN USING FULL SCREEN GREPLAY: All SAS data libraries and device drivers must be defined before beginning. Greplay uses function keys as well as commands submitted from the command line. The general form for Greplay is proc greplay options; A run statement is not necessary. The Greplay screen contains certain fields that must be completed in order to display pictures. IGOUT: The name of the input graphics catalog. DEV: The name of the device driver that will display the picture. The device driver can be changed in the Greplay session by entering the new device in the DEV field. Press ENTER to list the pictures in the IGOUT catalog. Each entry contains the following fields: A. SEL (selection field) B. NAME (SAS/Graph procedure used to create a picture) C. TYPE (I=independent runs alone vs D=dependent requiring another picture in the catalog to run) D. DESCRIPTION (Describes the picture) E. UPDATED (Date picture was last modified) (fig. 1). DISPLAYING VISUAL IMAGES: To display pictures simply place an S or Sn (n=the order in which the pictures are to be displayed) in the SEL field and depress the ENTER key (fig. 2). Use the ENTER key to move through the pictures to be displayed and to return to the Greplay screen. (NOTE: If the insert key is turned on the SEL field is nonfunctional.) MODIFYING INFORMATION IN THE FIELDS: The information in the NAME and DESCRIPTION can be modified by entering the MODIFY command at the command line. The fields become highlighted. Make necessary changes and submit the MODIFY command when fiuished (fig. 3). 1209
2 GROUPING PICTURES WITHIN A CATALOG: Note that only one picture may be present in any given catalog. To begin, submit the GROUP command from the command line. Place a letter in the SEL field to group the pictures and a number to order the pictures within a group (the number is optional). Press ENTER to process the information or submit the GROUP command at the command line to cancel (fig 4). The group headings may be modified following the steps in "Modifying Information in the fields". To display the entire group of pictures, place an S in the SEL field next to the group header. Use the ENTER key to move through the pictures. COPYING GRAPHS BETWEEN CATALOGS: To copy pictures between catalogs, the IGOUT and GOUT fields must be completed. The IGOUT field contains the name of the catalog where the pictures are stored and the GOUT field is the name of the destination catalog. Place a C in the SEL field next to the pictures to be copied and press ENTER when completed (fig 5). GRAPHICS DISPLAY OPTIONS: A. Color Mapping: Color mapping modifies the colors in the pictures to coincide with the colors available on the specified device driver. Color mapping in Greplay allows the user control over how the colors are mapped. To utilize the color mapping options, enter the name of the color catalog to be used in the CC field and submit the CC command at the command line (fig 6). To create a new or modify an existing colormap enter edit colonnapname (any sas name) on the command line and press ENTER. This will invoke the colormapping screen. The DESC field is the description of the colormap and can be edited by overwriting the defanlt description. To create the map place the original color in the "from" column and the new color in the "to column (fig. 7). When finished, submit the END command at the command line to save changes and return to colormapping directory screen. There will be one entry for every colormap created (fig. 8). Submit the END Command to return to the Greplay screen. To use the colormap simply place the name of the color catalog in the CC field and the colormapname in the CMAP field. Select the pictures to be displayed and press enter. The original colors will be mapped to the new colors as dermed by the colormap (fig. 9). B. Template Facility: The template facility is the most powerful option in Greplay. It allows the user the flexibility of framing pictures and displaying mnltiple pictures on a single screen in addition to many other options. These tasks are accomplished by creating and storing a series of panels or utilizing preexisting panels in the SASHELP. TEMPLT catalog. To create a new or modify an existing template, enter the template catalog in the TC field and submit the TC command. Once in the Template Catalog Directory Screen (fig. 10), enter edit templatename (any sas name) and press enter. The template design screen will be displayed. The design screen has a panel number field, xy coordinate system for creating panels, and a DESC field describing the templates. Each panel is defined using the xy coordinate system corresponding to the four corners of each panel: 1) lower left (L-LEFT) 2) upper left (U-LEFT) 3) upper right (U-RIGHT) and 4) lower right (L-RIGHT). Acceptable values are 0 through 100 including decimals. To create a panel, enter the panel number and the xy coordinates for the corners of the panel beginning with the lower left corner (fig. 11). When finished, submit the PREVIEW command to evaluate the pane\. Press ENTER to return to the design screen. Create additional panels or submit the SAVE command and return to the Template Directory Screen. There will be one entry for each group of panels created under the catalog. Submit the END command to return to the Greplay Screen. To use the template facility, enter the template catalog name in the TC field and the templatenarne in the TMAP field. Select the pictures to be displayed by placing a number in the SEL field to correspond to the panel where the picture is to be displayed. C. Presentation Catalog: Greplay has a presentation screen that allows the user to display picturea using the SEL and DESCRIPTION field. To use the presentation screen, the IGOUT field must be filled in and the PRES command submitted at the command line (fig. 12). Select the pictures for display. After all pictures have been displayed using the END or ENTER key, press END or ENTER to return to the presentation screen and end to return to the Greplay screen. If PRESENTATION was used as an option in the Proc Greplay statement, pressing END after the last picture will return the user to the SAS session in display manager. 1210
3 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The options available in GREPLA Y can be used together by filling in the appropriate fields and submitting the correct commands. Certain" environments can be preselected by submitting with options. Pictures in a graphics output catalog may be deleted by placing DEL in the SEL field next to the desired picture and pressing ENTER. Extreme caution should be used when using this option since SAS does not ask for confirmation before deleting pictures. CONCLUSION: Proc Greplay is a multipurpose presentation tool allowing the user to display, modify, group, copy and delete information generated by all SAS graphics procedures. Greplay is easy to learn and is an invaluable tool for the SAS Graphics users. REFERENCES SAS Institute Inc. SAS/Graph Guide for Personal Computers, Version 6 Edition.
