1. Introduction Congratulations on your choice of complimenting your Always "On" UPS Systems N-Series unit with a state-of-the-art UPS Status Contact Module. The Status Contact Module continually communicates with your UPS to provide operating status via robust 8 Amp, Form C contacts. A timer relay contact is controlled by 14 different timer relay delay settings and a week schedule that is broken down into 336 half-hour intervals. You can assign one of the 14 time delays to each half-hour interval. The time delay countdown is triggered once the ac mains supply to the UPS fails. Other contacts give status for ac mains supply fail and low battery warning conditions. Additional features include a log of 20 power transition events with time stamp. The user interface is easy to navigate and to program a schedule. A PC software package will soon be available for download from our website, further easing the schedule programming. 9 2. Handling 2.1. Delivery Upon receiving the UPS Status Module, inspect the packaging integrity and the physical condition of the unit carefully. In the event that physical damage is visible, the carrier must be informed immediately and a claim filed with them. Inform Always On as soon as the claim has been filed and a copy of claim should be faxed to Always On at (250) A detailed report of the damage is necessary for your carrier insurance claim Initial Inspection Unpack the unit carefully, and retain the box and packing material. If you must return the unit at any time, you must repack it the way it was originally shipped. Visually inspect the unit for damage that may have occurred during shipment. If there is damage, contact the dealer from whom you purchased the unit, and save the packaging for future shipment. When the unit has passed the initial inspection, record the Installation date on the back panel of the unit and in the space provided in the front of this manual. Included with the system: 1. User manual 2. Communication cable 2.3. Storage 1. If the UPS Status Contact Module is to be stored prior to installation, it should be placed in a dry, well-ventilated area where it will not be exposed to dirt, moisture or other contaminants. 2. Extreme storage temperatures are: a. -40ºC to +74ºC Important: 1. The internal real time clock is supported with a battery and should last approximately 5 years at 25ºC in storage. Expect a shorter lifetime when temperatures exceed 25ºC. 3

3. Installation The UPS Status Contact Module is intended for installation in a temperature and humidity controlled indoor environment, free of conductive contaminants. Absolute maximum ambient temperature at sea level must not exceed 74ºC (165ºF). Place the UPS Status Module within the cable length of the UPS. There is very little maintenance required for this unit Mounting There are 2 mounting screw holes to fit a ¼ screw with a ½ head. They are spaced 4 apart. Figure 3.1: Dimensions for Mounting the Status Module 3.2. Connecting to the UPS Connect the Status Module to the UPS with the supplied cable. Figure 3.2: Connecting the Status Module to the UPS 5
3.3. Status Contact Connection There are four form-c type relays standard with each unit. The relay functions are as follows: Relay 1 Relay 2 Relay 3 Relay 4 Dynamic Timer Relay Status Utility Failed Status Low Battery Status Future Use The connections are as follows in the figure below. Figure 3.3: Terminal Connections 6
4. Front Control Panel Always On UPS Systems Inc. Figure 4.1: LCD Display & Interface 4.1. Button Operation The buttons < and > are used for menu navigation and the button is used for menu selection or accepting changes Statuses of the Module Normal Operation: The AC Power Supply is within operating parameters and the UPS is operating in Online Mode. Utility Fail: The UPS has communicated with the Status Module to tell it that the utility power supply to the UPS has failed. The picture above shows 14 minutes until timer relay closes. This is a real time countdown display. Low Battery: The UPS has communicated with the Status Module to tell it that the battery reserve to the UPS is deemed low. Timer Expires (**FLASH**): The internal timer has counted down and enabled the timer relay. 7
Maintenance Mode (**LOCKOUT**): This mode deactivates the timer relay. It is activated/deactivated by pressing the < and > keys simultaneously. This feature may be used if a large extended battery pack is added to the UPS during an extended utility maintenance or outage. Thus a very large battery pack may be used instead of a portable generator. Therefore, if the timer relay is used in conjunction with the flash bus, the intersection will not go into flash in an extended outage. 8
4.3. Overview of Menus Various status and programming menus are accessible through the UPS Status Contact Module display; pressing the < and > buttons will scroll through the screens. Selection of a menu is done by pressing. Please note that the select curser indicates a selection by turning lower case letters to upper case letters. Table 4.3.1: Map of Menus 9
4.4. Description And Operation of Menus Timer Menu The timer menu provides 14 different programmable time delays. Each programmable time delay is related to a symbol (-, A through M). These timer symbols can be assigned to half-hour intervals throughout the week schedule. When an AC mains failure occurs during a particular half-hour interval, the time delay assigned to that interval will be the duration of the time delay for the timer relay during that outage. If the power returns before the timer expires, the contact will not close and the countdown is stopped. The table can be edited with the < and > and. The following illustrations describe this process. To back out to the main menu at any time, just repeatedly press the < key. Select Timer Edit: Highlight timer using the < or > keys. The selection of timer menu is indicated by the change from timer to TIMER. TIMER can be selected by pressing the key. The Timer splash screen tells you that you have selected the timer menu. Press the > key to go to program the Timers. Choose Timer To Edit: Hit to edit the timer delay value, shown as 1:04. Press the < and > keys to select different timers. Edit Timer Time Delay Values: Then use the < and > keys to change to a different value, in this case, 1:08. Press again to accept the changes as shown below. This is a similar process for all following programming changes. To back out to the main menu at any time, just repeatedly press the < key. 10
Schedule Menu The Schedule menu allows the user to schedule the 14 different timer relay delay settings for different time delays throughout the day, depending on what time an AC mains failure occurs. Any of the 14 timers can be assigned to each of the 336 half-hour intervals of the week schedule. The time delay countdown is triggered once the ac mains supply to the UPS fails. If a power outage occurs, the timer relay delay length is governed by the timer symbols (-, A thru M) in that particular half hour interval. The theory behind this feature is that it offers the user to place the intersection into flash to gain a duty cycle and an extended runtime when on battery backup after an extended period of backup. The schedule allows for programming of the timer relay to have different delay times depending on the time of day and day of the week. The table can be edited with the < and > and. To get to the menu, use the similar process illustrated in the first two stages in the Timer Menu progression. Review pictures below. To back out to the main menu at any time, just repeatedly press the < key. Select Schedule Edit: Highlight date using the < or > keys. The selection of schedule menu is indicated by the change from sched to SCHED. SCHED can be selected by pressing the key. Press the > key to continue past the splash screen. Push the < or > to navigate through the schedule time slots. The above illustration shows that the > key has been pushed once to show 12:30AM or 00:30. Change Timers For A Time Slot: Press to change the timer for a particular slot. Then press > to scroll through the days of the week at the selected time. In this case, Friday has been selected because it is upper case. 11
