1 Road Traffic Collisions Tableau Dashboard Answering Key Questions General Overview Changing the look and feel of the graphs is possible within Tableau, this allow a user to either: - Delve further into the data, to understand in greater detail the Road Traffic Incidents - Alter how the graphs, maps and views look do that they can be saved out for a report This general overview covers: - Changing date groupings on graphs (Year / quarter / month) - Changing colours of graphs - Adding Labels to maps - Apply a New Filter - Filter a graph to an exact date range How do I..? Change date groupings on a graph? 1. Change the date ranges on graphs. For example, the Historical Overview graph (or any graph) from year by year to quarter by quarter or month by month? a. Hover over the x-axis for the graph b. Select the plus icon that appears to increase the level of detail c. You will now have a quarter by quarter view, hover the mouse over the line on the graph 1 P a g e
2 d. Repeat the process again to get a month by month view e. On other graphs the same effect occurs Change the colours of graphs and charts? 2 P a g e

The colours of graphs and charts can be edited to enable the graph to be used in a report that requires a specific colour scheme that matches a corporate brand or a specific Local Authority set of colours. a. Select the Edit icon in the top right hand grey bar b. Tableau dashboards are a collection of graphs, charts, maps and buttons or dropdowns. Each chart or graph is called a sheet. As you hover over a graph the sheet area is highlighted in grey c. Each individual sheet is listed on the left hand side: 3 P a g e
4 d. Right-click on the sheet you want to change in the left hand grey panel and select Go to sheet e. Select Colour from the Marks box f. Select Edit Colours g. You can either: i. Select Color Palette from the drop down menu to choose a set of predefined colours and then select Assign Palette 4 P a g e
5 h. Or to specifically choose a colour for a value: i. Select Colour Palette from the drop down menu 5 P a g e
6 ii. Select each attribute you want to change and then select the colour on the palette 6 P a g e
7 1. Click the value you want to change colour. 2. Click the colour that you want. i. Or: i. Double click on the attribute you want to change and then paste the hex value for the exact colour you want A hex colour is a series of numbers and letter that are used to choose colours on the internet, you may have colours provided by your corporate team, or if you see a colour you like you can find hex colour pickers on the internet j. Select the close icon Add Labels to the map? 3. The maps on Tableau can be edited to appear differently. This can help with producing maps for reports, or to change the view to how you prefer. 7 P a g e
8 a. Set up your map with the filters and selection tools to display what you want on the map. If you are unsure how to do this, refer to xxxxx manual / documentation. b. Select the Edit icon in the top right hand grey bar c. You should be on either the site selection or site level details page. You can tell which page you are on from the list of tabs at the bottom of the screen. d. Right-click on the sheet you want to add labels to in the left hand grey panel and select Go to sheet e. Use the Ctrl key on your keyboard plus a left click drag action to drag the dimension you want to label the map with from the Marks box onto Label 8 P a g e
9 Hold CTRL on the keyboard and drag this Mark onto the Label area. Apply a New Filter 4. On any Tableau Dashboard you can apply additional filters that may not be immediately available on the dropdown options. a. Set up your view with the filters and selection tools that are already there b. Select the Edit icon in the top right hand grey bar 9 P a g e
10 c. Right-click on the sheet you want to filter to in the left hand grey panel and select Go to sheet d. Unhide Extract under Dimensions (which are like column headers in an Excel spreadsheet) from the left hand side panel by clicking on the arrow e. Scroll down to find the dimension you would like to add as a filter 10 P a g e
11 f. Left click and drag the dimension onto the filters box Drag the dimension into the filters area. g. Use the filter, that appears on the right side of the screen, to tick or untick the attributes you want to keep or lose 11 P a g e
12 Filter by an exact date range 5. To alter the date/time on many of the graphs there is a slider. This can also have an exact data selected, rather than using the slider to try and get the exact dates you require. a. Double click on the from date that is showing b. Either: i. Use the calendar to change the date c. Or: i. Click again on the date to unselect the text ii. Amend the date by deleting and typing as necessary d. Repeat the process for the to date that is showing 12 P a g e
