This booklet introduces you to the basics of getting started with Sprint and your HTC Arrive. 4 Insert the Battery Install the Battery 1. Remove the back cover. With the device face down, slide the back of the device to the right (opening the keyboard). With your thumb or finger, lift up the back cover from the small notch at the side of the device. 2. Remove the battery from its packaging and insert it into the opening at the back of the device, exposed copper contacts first. Gently push the battery into place. 4

5 3. Replace the back cover. Align the three tabs on the right side, slide the keyboard closed, and then press the left side down. You will hear a click when the cover is locked into place. Charge the Battery 1. Insert the small end of the USB cable into the charger/accessory jack on the lower left side of the device. 2. Insert the larger end of the USB cable into the AC adapter and plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. 6 Activate Your Device Activate Your Device If you purchased your device at a Sprint Store, it is probably activated and ready to use. Proceed to Set Up Your Device on the next page to get started. If you received your device in the mail, and it is a new Sprint account or a new phone number, your device is designed to activate automatically when you first turn it on. Proceed to Set Up Your Device on the next page to turn your device on and get started. If you received your device in the mail and it is going to be activated on an existing number (you re swapping phones), before turning it on, go to sprint.com/activate and follow the instructions. When you have finished, proceed to Set Up Your Device on the next page to get started. If your device is still not activated (or you do not have access to the Internet), contact Sprint Customer Service at for assistance. 6

7 Set Up Your Device Turn Your Device On Press the Power button ( ) to turn your device on (black button located at the top of the device on the right). Set Up Your Device When you turn on your device for the first time, you ll be asked to set some options. Just follow the onscreen instructions and you ll be up and running with your device in no time. 1. If your device is activated when you first turn it on, you will see a Setting up connections screen followed by a Success! message. Tap next at the bottom right, and then tap get started to begin. 2. Read the Windows Phone Terms of Use. If you agree, tap accept. 3. Follow the prompts to select Windows Phone settings and choose a time zone. 4. You ll be prompted to sign in with a Windows Live ID. Tap sign in to sign in with your Windows Live ID and password, create one to sign up for a new Windows Live ID, or not now to skip it. A Windows Live ID is the address you use to sign in to services like Xbox LIVE, Zune, and Hotmail. If you can t remember the address you use: For Xbox LIVE: On your Xbox 360 console, sign in with your gamertag and press the Guide button on the controller (the one that looks like the Xbox logo). In Settings, click Account Management > Windows Live ID. For Zune: Sign in to the Zune software on your PC. Right-click your profile picture and click Switch user to see your Windows Live ID. 5. Tap done and you re all set. Note: You do not need to complete every step in the setup application now. 8 Using Your Device s Touchscreen Move Around Your Device s Menus and Screens Using Gestures First time using a touchscreen? You can control everything on your device through various types of touches or gestures on the touchscreen. Tap: To select items such as tiles, apps, or settings, press onscreen buttons, or type using the onscreen keyboard, tap lightly with your finger. Press and hold: To open the available options for an item (for example, a link in a Web page), press and hold the item. Swipe or slide: To swipe or slide (for example, to clear the lock screen), quickly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen. Drag: To drag an item (for example, to move a Start screen tile), press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to move it. Do not release your finger until you have reached the target position. Tap Swipe, Slide or Drag Press and hold 8

9 Flick: Flicking is similar to swiping, but with lighter, quicker strokes. This finger gesture is always used in a vertical motion, such as when flicking through contacts or a message list. Flick Pinch: Pinch the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom out or zoom in when viewing a photo or a Web page. (Move fingers inward to zoom out and outward to zoom in.) Pinch Rotate: Change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the device sideways. When entering text, you can turn the device sideways to bring up a bigger onscreen keyboard (or just slide open the hardware keyboard). Rotate visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 9

10 Moving Around Your Device Turn the Screen On and Off To quickly turn the display screen off and lock the screen, press the Power button ( ). To turn the screen on and display the lock screen, press. To unlock the screen, touch the wallpaper and drag or flick the image toward the top of the screen. Turn the Device Off Press and hold the screen. until you see Goodbye! on Buttons There are only three main buttons to worry about when navigating your device. Back Start Search Press Start ( ) to display the Start screen from any other screen. Press and hold for Speech, your device s voice recognition feature. Press Back ( ) to return to the previous screen. Press Search ( ) to launch a Bing Web search or a context-sensitive search. Search becomes find Search is your one-button gateway to all kinds of answers. Want to find a contact? Press from People. Looking for an message? Press in . Use it in Maps, , wherever. 10

11 Your Start Screen Your Start Screen Your device s Start screen contains Windows Phone live tiles that continuously update and show the information that matters to you, like your photo album, number of new messages, Xbox LIVE updates, and more: To scroll through the Start screen, swipe your finger up or down. To display the Start screen from any other screen, just press Start ( ). To access a list of all the applications and settings on your device, tap on the right side of the Start screen. Customizing Your Start Screen You can pin all sorts of things to your Start screen, including apps, websites, map locations, and even contacts. To pin most items to the Start screen, tap and hold the item until a menu appears, and then tap pin to start. For others, tap in the app bar at the bottom. To move a tile on the Start screen, tap and hold it, drag it to the location you want, release it, and tap it again. 12 Make and Answer Calls Make a Phone Call 1. Press and tap. 2. Tap to display the dialpad, and then dial the number you want to call. (The number will appear above the keypad as you enter it.) 3. Tap call to place the call. Answer an Incoming Call If the display is on, tap answer. If the display is off, the display will turn on showing the Lock screen. Slide the screen up and tap answer to answer the call. Reject an Incoming Call If the display is on, tap ignore to reject the call and send it to voic . If the display is off, the display will turn on showing the Lock screen. Slide the screen up and tap ignore to reject the call and send it to voic . Mute the Ringer on a Call To mute the ringer, do any of the following: Press the volume up or down button. Press. Place the device face down on a level surface. 12

13 Voic Set Up Your Voic All unanswered calls are automatically transferred to your voic , even if your phone is in use or turned off. You should set up your voic and personal greeting as soon as your phone is activated: 1. Press and tap. 2. Tap to connect to your voic box. 3. Follow the voice prompts to create your password and record your name and greeting. Retrieve Your Voic 1. Press and tap. 2. Tap to connect to your voic box. From any other phone: 1. Dial your wireless phone number. 2. When your voic answers, press *. 3. Enter your password. Voic Password (do not share): Sprint strongly recommends setting and using a voic password. 14 Contacts Viewing the People Hub (Contacts) When you set up your or Facebook account, your contacts are imported automatically into your People Hub. You ll be able to see contacts from your Windows Live, Facebook, and other accounts such as Gmail and Outlook. You can even add contacts the old-fashioned way, by hand. To view the People Hub, press and tap People. The People Hub flows across three screens: all, what s new, and recent. all shows a list of contacts from all the accounts you have synced. what s new shows recent Facebook updates if you have signed into your Facebook account. recent shows tiles for people whose profiles you have recently viewed. Adding a New Account From the People Hub The People Hub makes it easy to add new accounts. For example, to sign into your Facebook account from the People Hub: 1. Press and tap People. 2. Swipe the screen to the left to show what s new and then tap set up account. 3. Tap Facebook, enter the account and password you use with your Facebook account, and then tap sign in. You ll begin seeing Facebook updates in what s new and your Facebook friends will be listed in all. 14

15 Save a Phone Number 1. Press and tap >. 2. Enter a phone number using the onscreen keypad and tap save at the bottom of the screen. 3. Tap search or a contact name to save the number to an existing contact. Tap new contact to create a new entry. 4. If prompted, select an account for the contact, for example, Windows Live or Google. 5. Tap the number type to select a type, for example, mobile or work. 6. Tap next to name, add a name, tap and then tap (Save). or Tap an existing contact name, tap and then tap. Add a New Entry to People 1. Press and tap People. 2. On the all screen, tap to enter a new contact. 3. Tap name, phone, , etc., to enter the information you want to store. If you have multiple accounts synced, select an account type as well. After each type of information you enter, tap. When you re finished entering all the information, tap. Merging Different Contact Types Chances are good that with all those different accounts, there will be duplicate entries. People makes it easy to link multiple entries into one. 1. Press, tap People, and then tap a name. 2. Tap, and then tap a suggested link (if available) or tap choose a contact and tap a name to link the entries. visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 15

16 Messaging Send a Text Message 1. Press and tap (Messaging). 2. Tap to begin a new message. 3. Enter a contact name, phone number, or address in the To: field at the top of the screen, or tap to search for and select a contact. 4. Tap type a message and then start composing your message. Use either the onscreen keyboard or slide out the hardware keyboard. 5. When you are finished, tap. Send a Picture Message (Multimedia Messaging) 1. Press and tap (Messaging). 2. Tap to begin a new message. 3. Enter a contact name, phone number, or address in the To: field at the top of the screen, or tap to search for and select a contact. 4. Tap type a message and then start composing your message. Use either the onscreen keyboard or slide out the hardware keyboard. 5. Tap. 6. Select a photo from the available folders. or Instead of selecting a photo, tap on the choose picture page to launch the camera and take a photo to attach. 7. 17 Access Messages When you receive a new message, your device plays an alert sound and briefly displays a message bar at the top of the screen. Your messages are collected in ongoing conversations with any given contact, so when you view a message, you can scroll through the entire history of your messages with that person. To display your messages: 1. Press and tap. (You can also tap the notification to go directly to the conversation.) 2. From the conversations screen, tap the message you want to view. 3. To reply, tap the type a message box, enter your reply, and tap. Tip: To call the sender of a message, tap the number shown in the message and then tap call. visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 17

18 18 You can link multiple accounts to your HTC Arrive, including your Outlook (Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync) accounts. You ve probably already set up your Windows Live account, but if not, you can configure it and any other accounts through the & accounts settings page. Set Up a Windows Live Account 1. Press and tap > settings > & accounts. (Or tap setup on the Start page.) 2. Tap add an account > Windows Live. 3. Enter the address and password and tap sign in. The application will complete the account setup process for you and place a Hotmail tile on the Start screen. Note: Although you do not need a Windows Live account to use your device, signing in with a Windows Live account is required to get apps through the Marketplace or to use certain features such as Xbox LIVE and Zune. Note: If you have multiple Windows Live accounts and you want to use your Xbox LIVE account or Zune account on your device, make sure you sign in with that specific Windows Live account. Set Up Another Account 1. Press and tap > settings > & accounts. 2. Tap add an account and select an account type. Windows Live, Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, or Google to set up those specific account types. other account to set up another type of POP or IMAP account. 3. Enter the address and password and tap sign in. The application will retrieve settings and complete the account setup process for you. Advanced Setup 1. If you need to enter specific server settings or other advanced setup features, tap advanced setup in step 2 above. 2. Enter the address and password and tap Next. 3. Tap Exchange ActiveSync and enter the User name, Domain, and Server information for the

19 account. You ll need to get the necessary information from your Exchange Server administrator. or Tap Internet account and enter the Incoming server, Account type, User name, and Outgoing server information. 4. Tap sign in to sign in to the account. Access Messages Once you have set up accounts, you ll see tiles for each account on your Start screen. Whenever new mail comes in, you ll see the number of new messages for an account on its tile. Press and tap an tile to view your inbox. (If you ve removed the tile from the Start screen, tap and then tap the account name.) To view only unread messages, tap unread at the top of the inbox. Send an Message 1. Press and tap an tile. 2. Tap to begin a new message. 3. Enter a contact name or address in the To: field at the top of the screen, or tap to search for and select a contact. 4. Enter a subject and a message. To attach a photo, tap, and select a photo from the available folders (or tap and take a new photo to attach). 5. Tap to send the message. visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 19

20 Camera & Video Take a Photo 1. Press the camera button on the lower right side of the device, or press and tap > Camera to launch the camera. (The first time you launch it, tap allow if you want the camera application to use your device s location information.) 2. Holding the device in landscape mode (with the camera button at the top), frame your subject in the screen. The camera will automatically focus on the center portion of the screen. 3. Press the camera button to take a photo. Your device will save the photo and return to camera mode. To see options for the photo you just took, swipe the screen from left to right and tap. (The first time you access options, select an option for automatically sharing photos to your online account. Tap ok to confirm.) Capture a Video 1. Press the camera button on the lower right side of the device, or press and tap > Camera. 2. Tap to switch to video mode. 3. Holding the device in landscape mode (with the camera button at the top), frame your subject in the screen. 4. Press the camera button to begin recording. Press it again to stop recording. Your device will save the video. To delete it, swipe the screen from left to right, tap > delete and then tap delete. Photo & Video Settings From the camera, tap to open the settings menu. 20

21 View Photos and Videos The Pictures Hub lets you review all the photos and videos stored on your device. You can also view any photos you have available in your Windows Live or Facebook accounts, including photos posted by your Facebook friends. 1. Press and tap Pictures. 2. Tap a viewing option (all, dates, favorites, what s new) and tap an album or a photo or video to view it. 3. For options, tap an image and tap (your photos and videos only, not Facebook photos). If the photo is from your Facebook or Windows Live account, tap save to phone to save it to a folder on your device. If the photo is already on your device, choose from additional options including add to favorites, upload to SkyDrive, share, and use as wallpaper. Share 1. Press and tap Pictures. 2. Tap a viewing option and tap a photo to view it. 3. Tap > share. 4. Tap a sharing option (Messaging, account, upload to Facebook, upload to SkyDrive). 5. 22 Stay in Sync Using Zune Synchronize Your Device Using Zune Your HTC Arrive makes it easy to synchronize your music, videos, photos, and more from your computer to your phone (or vice versa). First you ll need to install the Zune software on your computer. 1. Connect your device to your computer using the included USB cable. 2. On your computer, go to windowsphone.com to download and install the Zune software. 3. Open the Zune software on your computer, and then follow the instructions to add music, videos, photos, and whatever else you want into your collection. The first time you connect, you ll be prompted to name your device and search for updates. Don t worry it s a quick process. 4. Click collection, and then drag whatever you want to sync to your device to the phone icon in the lower left corner of the Zune page. Music + Videos Hub Play Music Using the Music + Videos Hub Your device s entire media collection is available through the Music + Videos Hub. 1. Press and tap Music + Videos. 2. In zune, tap music. 3. Slide your finger left or right to browse by artists, albums, songs, playlists, or genres. 4. Tap an item to begin listening. Tap to stop playing. (If you re not viewing the player, press the volume button and tap at the top of the screen to stop playing.) Watch Videos 1. Press and tap Music + Videos > videos. 2. Slide your finger left or right to browse by category. 3. Tap an item to begin watching. Videos are shown in widescreen mode. 22

23 Wi-Fi Connect to a Wi-Fi Network When you re in range of an available Wi-Fi network you can use your device s Wi-Fi feature to access the Internet and other data services. 1. Press and tap > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. If it s not already on, tap the Wi-Fi networking switch on the right. Your device will scan for and list available Wi-Fi networks. 3. Tap a Wi-Fi network to connect to it. If it s a secure network, type the password and tap done. Tip: When you re not using Wi-Fi, tap the Wi-Fi networking switch to turn Wi-Fi off and extend battery life. Web Go Online Whether using your Sprint data services or a Wi-Fi connection, going online is a snap. 1. Press and tap (Internet Explorer). 2. Navigate the Web from the SprintWeb home page, enter Web addresses in the address bar, and more. Press to run a Bing search. Tap to use tabbed browsing, add tabs, or switch between tabs. Tap or to access and add Favorites. Tap for even more options. To scroll, slide your finger up or down the page. To zoom in or out, pinch the screen. Note: If you re browsing in widescreen (landscape) mode, you ll need to rotate the phone back to portrait mode to access many of the browser options. visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 23

24 Marketplace Downloading Apps and Games From Windows Phone Marketplace Windows Phone Marketplace gives you a central location to find, purchase, and download new applications, games, and music for your HTC Arrive. 1. Press and tap (Marketplace). 2. Tap a category to browse available content. HTC Apps to view free exclusive applications offered by HTC for the HTC Arrive. apps to browse all apps available through Marketplace by category, top sellers, new, and featured. games to browse available games sorted by xbox live, top, new, free, and categories. music to access music available through the Zune marketplace. 3. When you find an item you want, tap it to see its details. To sample an app, tap try. To buy an item, tap buy and confirm your payment method (you ll need a credit card). To install a free item, tap install. Access Installed Apps Once you ve downloaded and installed an app, it appears in your applications list. Installed Games are available through the Games Hub (see next page). 1. Press and tap. 2. Scroll to locate the new app and tap it to launch the application. 24

25 Games Xbox LIVE Your HTC Arrive lets you join in and play Xbox LIVE games and other fun games on the go. Signing Into Xbox LIVE If you have an Xbox LIVE ID (a Windows Live ID associated with your Xbox LIVE gamertag), you can sign in and join the fun on your device. 1. Press and tap Games. 2. Swipe your finger across the screen until you see Xbox LIVE, and then tap Join Xbox LIVE to play with friends. 3. Tap sign in when you see Windows Live ID required, and then follow the instructions to sign in or create a new Windows Live ID. Note: If you re already signed in to your device with the Windows Live ID you use with your gamertag, you should already be signed in to Xbox LIVE. Get Games 1. Press and tap Games. 2. Under collection, tap Try now to try Xbox LIVE games for free, tap Get more games to jump to the Marketplace games section, or swipe to spotlight and tap a featured game. To sample a game, tap try. To buy a game, tap buy and confirm your payment method (you ll need a credit card). To install a free game, tap install. Play Games Once you ve installed a game, it appears under collection in the Games Hub. 1. Press and tap Games. 2. 26 HTC Hub The HTC Hub features applications preinstalled by HTC on your device, as well as other apps available for download. Access the HTC Hub 1. Press and tap HTC Hub. The first time you access it, you may be prompted to allow HTC Hub to use your location. Tap ok if you want to allow your location to be used. 2. Tap and swipe through to see featured items, applications, games, and more. Viewing the Weather The HTC Hub gives you weather for your current location at a glance. 1. To check the weather, press and tap HTC Hub. 2. Tap the weather image to open the weather screen and view details. Tap for more options. 26

27 GPS Navigation Using TeleNav GPS Navigator 1. Press and tap TeleNav GPS Nav. The first time you access the feature, follow the prompts to allow location use, accept the Terms of Use, and register your device. 2. From the TeleNav GPS Navigator main menu, choose an option and follow the onscreen instructions to get directions, view maps, or access additional services or options. Main menu options include drive to, search, maps & traffic, tools & extras, and upgrade to premium. Using Bing Maps 1. Press and tap > Maps. The first time you access Maps, you will be prompted to allow the application to use your device s location information. 2. Use the application options to find your current location, get directions, or search for a location. Tap to see your current position on a map. Tap and enter a location to get driving or walking directions from your current location. Tap to search for an address or a place (for example, enter pizza in the search field to get a list of pizza places near you). visit sprint.com/support for complete user guide 27

28 Battery-Saving Tips Reduce the Screen Timeout Period 1. Press and tap > Settings > lock & wallpaper. 2. Tap the Screen time-out box and select a time period before the screen automatically turns off and locks. Reduce the Screen Brightness By default, the screen brightness automatically adjusts to surrounding light conditions. You can manually adjust the brightness to save power. 1. Press and tap > Settings > brightness. 2. Tap the Automatically adjust switch on the right and then tap a brightness level. Manage Your Device s Wireless Functions Disable the data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location functions of the device when you re not using them. 1. Press and tap > Settings. 2. Tap a wireless function and then tap the switch on the right to turn that service off. Tap cellular and tap the Data connection switch. Tap Wi-Fi and tap the Wi-Fi networking switch.
