1 Product Leica GS09 GNSS Version GS09 firmware v8.50 From GPS Instruments Product Management Date 09 December 2011 DVD No DVD available download from Leica myworld only Download These Release Notes contain information about Leica GS09 SmartWorx software version 8.50 that can be loaded onto CS09 controllers (all) and RX900 controllers (serial number and below only). Included in these notes are installation instructions and a list of files which are part of this software. The new firmware and loadable applications can be obtained from a local Leica Geosystems representative or can be downloaded from Leica myworld. This firmware is protected and can only be loaded onto instruments with a valid firmware (software) Maintenance Date. The Maintenance End Date can be checked on the CS09 Firmware System Information page. This is accessed by pressing USER, F3-STAT, 5-System, F6-PAGE. If the Maintenance End date is before 23 November 2011 then this firmware cannot be loaded. If the Maintenance End date is no longer valid, please contact your local Leica Representative to learn about Customer Care Packages (CCPs) which include software maintenance, so that you can benefit from the latest software improvements. PacificCrest mode for GFU27 Use of a Bluetooth mobile phone at the reference Additional RTK information which can be exported using format files With version 8.50 the Satel TR1 (GFU 27) radio can be operated either in the Satel mode or in PacificCrest mode. The PacRest mode can be set in the radio configuration panel. It is now possible to use a mobile phone connected via Bluetooth to the CS09 as reference modem for dial-up RTK connections. Additional RTK information is now stored to the MDB: - Reference ID of the physical and non-phsical reference stations (Vrs, i-max) - Master ID and Auxiliary station IDs for MAX The information is obtained from different RTCM v 3.x messages (1005, 1014 and 1032). The information can be exported using custom data export (format files) on the instrument or inside LGO. 3 Loading the new firmware and applications Controller Files The following firmware files are available for the CS09 and RX900 controllers: The main CS09 firmware file also contains the Windows CE v5.0 software. Five WinCE languages are available. CS09_en.fw - contains the English language version of WinCE CS09_de.fw - contains the German language version of WinCE CS09_fr.fw - contains the French language version of WinCE CS09_es.fw - contains the Spanish language version of WinCE CS09_jp.fw - contains the Japanese language version of WinCE Note: It is still necessary to load the system language file in order to use the software in the required language. The file extension will differ depending on the language version of the application. For example SYS_Lang.sde is the language file for German. Once the firmware and languages have been loaded onto the controller, then the required application programs can be loaded. The file extension will differ depending on the language version of the application. For example RX_Cogo.aen is the COGO application program in English. SmartAntenna File The following firmware file is available for all GS09 and ATX900 antennas: ME_3019_6110.fw contains the firmware for ME3 and ME4 measurement engines. To check the measurement engine version currently installed, press USER, F3-STAT, 5-System, F6-PAGE. Note: The antenna must be connected to the CS09 controller in order to see the firmware version number. Installing Installing the new Firmware All firmware, languages and applications are uploaded to the instruments from the CFcard when inside the CS09 controller. All the required files firstly need to be copied to the StorageCard/System directory of the CF-card. In order to copy the files onto the CF-card requires the use of Microsoft ActiveSync or Vista Mobile Device Center and the GEV234 USB cable. The files can also be copied onto the removable CF-card by using a card reader. Once the files are on the CF-card, they need to be uploaded to the instruments by following the described steps below. Note: Ensure that fully charged batteries are inserted when uploading the firmware. This process can take some time and the power supply must NOT be interrupted during the uploading process. 4 Uploading the new Firmware Uploading the new firmware, languages and applications from the CF-Card To successfully load the new firmware, follow the instructions below. Be sure to read them carefully and do exactly as described below in the given order. 1) Delete the existing programs from the instrument Existing application programs and languages loaded on the instrument cannot be used with the new firmware and need to be deleted from the instrument as follows: 1. From the main menu, choose 6-Tools and 1-Format. The Format Memory Device panel is now displayed. Press F4-PROGS and F6-YES to the confirmation message. 2. After deleting the existing application programs, the instrument will turn off. Turn the instrument back on. Note: The instrument language is now reset to English. 2) Load the main instrument firmware 1. From the main menu, choose 6-Tools and 3-System. In the Upload System Files panel select 3-Instrument Firmware. The file name CS09_xx.fw should be visible in the Firmware prompt. If the appropriate file name is not visible then check that the firmware file is in the System directory of the CF-card. 2. Press F1-CONT to start the installation. A message will appear to ensure that you have fully loaded batteries. Check that the battery icon shows at least ¾ capacity. Press F6-YES to begin the loading of the new firmware to the instrument. 3. The loading process will take some time possibly even up to 20 minutes. DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERIES DURING THIS TIME. After this period, the controller will re-boot and the SmartWorx software will be started. 4. To check the firmware has correctly loaded, access the System Information screen, Firmware page view. (Press USER, F3-STAT, 5-System). 3) Load the system language If a different language than English is required, then proceed as follows: 1. From the main menu, choose 6-Tools and 3-System. In the Upload System Files panel choose 2-System Languages. 2. A language file should be visible at the Language prompt. If a file is not visible then check you have correctly copied the language file to the System directory of the CF-card. 3. Press F1-CONT to load the language. 4) Load the Measurement Engine Firmware 1. The current measurement engine firmware should be loaded onto the antenna. This requires a connection between the contoller and the SmartAntenna using the GEV237 cable. Geomatics Division 4/6

5 2. To configure cable communication, choose 5-Config, 2-Instr. Config, 1- Antenna. In the Antenna & Antenna Heights panel set the Comm device to USB Cable. 3. To start the upload, from the main menu, choose 6-Tools and 3-System. In the Upload System Files panel choose 3-Instrument Firmware. The file name ME.fw should be selected at the Firmware prompt. If this file is not visible, ensure that it has been copied to the System directory of the CF-card. Note: Ensure that the batteries powering the controller and antenna are fully charged before starting the upload. 4. Press F1-CONT to load the measurement engine firmware. When using the antenna again, it will take several minutes to receive a new almanac before it starts to track satellites. 5) Load the additional applications 1. Choose 6-Tools and 3-System. In the Upload System Files panel select 1- Application Programs. 2. The appropriate file can be selected at the Program prompt. If a file name is not visible then check you have correctly copied the application files to the System directory of the CF-card. 3. Press F1-CONT to load the selected application program. 4. Repeat steps 2 to 4 until all required applications have been loaded. Geomatics Division 5/6
