Welcome to Using The Audible Otis on Your Mac! Thank you for purchasing Audible s own exclusive mp3 device, the Otis. This guide provides instructions on how to use and enjoy your new device on a Mac. This guide will help you in: 1. Setting Up your portable Otis device in itunes 3 2. Transferring your files to your portable Otis device 3. Listening to your files on your portable Otis device. This guide can be used online as a quick reference or you may print a copy for reference when exploring the web site. Happy Listening! We welcome your comments and suggestions about this guide. Please them to gettingstartedguide@ 1
Step One Setting Up Your Otis. Before You Connect Your Otis Before you connect your Otis, please make sure you have done the following: You have a Mac running OS X. You have the itunes 3.0 or higher installed. You have installed the Audible Otis plug-in for itunes 3. You can find this plug-in by going to Connect Your Device Now you are ready to connect your Otis to your Mac: Insert the batteries found in the box into the Otis Now connect your USB cable (included in the box) to the Otis and a free USB port on your Mac. Open itunes 3 and you will see the Otis appear on the left section under Source in the itunes application. (See below for a screenshot) Please note: The Otis LCD screen (display) will turn itself off when plugged into your Mac to save battery life. Sample itunes 3 Display 2
Setting up a Storage Card The Otis will work with any MMC card (sold separately) up to 128 MB. We highly recommend using cards from Sandisk, as they have been found to work best with our device. Insert the MMC card by pushing it completely into the card slot found at the top of the device, with the gold contacts facing down and towards the front of the device. Once the card has been inserted itunes will show a new item under source on the left section. (See below for a screenshot) You use your library to download a copy or to listen to your audio program Sample itunes 3 Display 3
Activate your Otis Before you can transfer any files to your Otis you will need to activate it. Activation is the process of identifying that your Otis device is allowed to play files that belong to you. To activate your Otis you will need to open the Device Options screen. To open the screen click on the first button found on the bottom right in itunes. (See below for a screenshot) Once you have opened the Device Options, click on Add Account. (See below for a screenshot) You will now be asked for the username and password you created at. You will need to be connected to the Internet when activating your device. You are now ready to use your Otis with your files. Sample itunes 3 Display 4
Step Two Transferring Files to Your Otis Transfer files to your Otis Now you are ready to transfer files to your device. This section will help you with: Transferring files to your Otis Transferring parts of a file when the file size is larger than your storage space Transferring MP3 files to your Otis Please note: Your Otis device will only support files in format 2 and format 3. How to transfer an file to your Otis Once you have downloaded your files, they will appear under the Library section of itunes. Follow these steps to transfer the file to your Otis device: 1. Click on the word Library under Source in itunes. 2. Find the file you want to transfer. (See below for a screenshot) 3. Now click on the file and drag it to the Audible-Otis or Audible-Otis (Storage card) location under Source 4. You will see the progress of the file transfer on the top of the itunes screen. (See below for a screenshot) 5
How to transfer a file that is too large to your Otis device At times you will find that you have an file that is too large to fit in the internal memory or storage card of your Otis. We have created a feature that will allow you to transfer parts of the file. Please do the following to enable this feature: First open the Device Options screen. To open the screen click on the first button found on the bottom right in itunes. (See below for a screenshot) Once you have opened the Device Options, check Enable Partial Transfers. (See below for a screenshot) Please Note: When you enable partial transfers itunes will display that you have more free memory in your Otis than you actually have. It may show that you have up to 500 MB when you only have 64 MB itunes will now split the file you want to transfer and only send what you have available for storage. For Example: o You have a 80 MB file o You transfer the file to your Audible-Otis (which holds only 64 MB internally) o itunes will now transfer the first 64 MB of the file. Once you listen to the file on your Otis, simply re-connect it and retransfer the same file. itunes will notice the last place you left on the audio and transfer the remainder of the file. For Example: o o o You listen to ½ of the audio on your Otis for a total of 32 MB of the 80 MB file You reconnect the Otis device and transfer the same file itunes will notice that you last audio position and transfer the remainder 48 MB of your 80 MB file to your device. 6
How to transfer MP3 files to your Otis Your Otis device also supports MP3 files. The use of MP3 files is very much the same as using your files. To transfer MP3 files to your Otis do the following: 1. Click on the word Library under Source in itunes. 2. Find the MP3 file you want to transfer. 3. Now click on the file and drag it to the Audible-Otis or Audible-Otis (Storage card) location under Source 4. You will see the progress of the file transfer on the top of the itunes screen. 7
Step Three Listening to Your Files Using Your Otis Listening to your files Now that you have transferred files to your Otis, let s get ready to enjoy them. In this section we will help you with: General operation of your Otis Give you an overview of the Display on your Otis 8
Operating your Otis With your files now in your device, us the following to operate your device: Turning it on Press and hold the PLAY button for 2 seconds. Turning it off Press and hold the STOP button for 2 seconds. Play files Press the PLAY button. Pause during play Press the PLAY button during playback. Stop play Press the STOP button. Rewind within an file or music track Press and hold the REW button. Skip to the next section in an file Press the SEC up button. [Note: Sections enable the user to advance from chapter to chapter or section to section within audio programs that have been pre-divided into sections (i.e. each individual article in the Wall Street Journal or New York Times is a single section of audio)] Skip to the previous section in an file Press the SEC down button. Make the Otis buttons inactive Move the HOLD button up. This is a good feature if you are carrying your Otis in your pocket and don t want any buttons pressed accidentally.
