5 General Information about SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Distribution 1 General Information about SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Distribution 1.1 Definition of SWIFTRef File Publication Date and File Activation Date The date in the SWIFTRef directory filename represents the publication date or the activation date. Definition File publication date File activation date Description The date at which SWIFT makes the file available to its users. All SWIFTRef data files are published on the same day (that is, the publication date), as per the SWIFTRef Monthly Directories Publication Schedule on page 14. The date on which the data in the file becomes active, if not specified otherwise (see Activation of Individual Records on page 7). The date in the filename of Alliance Bank File, BIC Directory, CCH, and EURO1/STEP Directory reflects the data activation date. Type of file Description Example Alliance Bank File BIC Directory CCH EURO1/STEP1 Directory BIC Directory 2018 The date in the filename is the first Saturday of the month following the publication date. The date in the filename of the BIC Directory files relates to the date on which the new BICs are activated on the SWIFT network (that is, the BIC activation date). For BIC Directory 2018, the date in the file name is the publication date (not the same as the BIC Directory). BICs are activated on the first Saturday of the month following the publication date. Time of file availability with manual and automated download For manual download and automated download, all SWIFTRef directories are accessible at 02:00 GMT on the monthly publication date. For example, directories published on 27 May 2016 will be accessible at 02:00 GMT on 27 May The files are always available at 02:00 GMT. However, they may appear earlier. 7 General Information about SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Distribution 1.3 Activation of Individual Records It is not necessary to activate all records within a file at the same time. Because the files are published monthly, some records can be valid earlier or later, as explained in the following section. In the Alliance Bank File, BIC Directory, BIC Directory 2018, and EURO1/STEP1 Only the records with new BICs become valid at the file activation date. All other modified, added, and deleted records are already valid at the publication date of the file. However, since the original practice for the BIC Directory has been to activate the entire file at the activation date, SWIFT recommends keeping the activation process unchanged. All other SWIFTRef files, such as Bank Directory Plus, Bank Directory for SAP, IBAN Plus, SEPA Plus, Service Directory, and SSI Plus Some records may become valid later than the file activation date. For example, records with new BICs become active approximately a week after the file activation date, or some SSIs may become valid after the file activation date. This future record activation date, if different from the file activation date, is specified in the column FIELD A. The number of such records with a future activation date is currently smaller than 0.1 percent of records. You can ignore these records if you cannot implement them immediately. However, SWIFT recommends implementing future validation in the long term. The files COUNTRY CODE, CURRENCY CODE, HOLIDAY, HOLIDAY SERVICES, and TIMEZONE do not have the column FIELD A. All the records are valid at the date specified in the file name. Daily updates always contain activated BICs. Example In the following example, the line entry (record) in Bank Directory Plus DELTA file indicates that the BIC SCBLSG22 will be activated on the date in FIELD A. The record is indicated as "Modified". Modified BIC8 Branch BIC Institution Name Field A A SCBLSG22 XXX SCBLSG22XXX STANDARD CHARTERED BANK In the following month's publication, the same record shows the modification flag as "M", which indicates that the BIC is active: Modified BIC8 Branch BIC Institution Name Field A M SCBLSG22 XXX SCBLSG22XXX STANDARD CHARTERED BANK Note The examples do not show all of the columns in the actual file. 1.4 Differences in RECORD KEYs in Daily and Monthly Files SWIFT recommends that customers use the same file frequency (that is, either daily or monthly) for all of their SWIFTRef files that need to be linked using the record key cross-reference. For example, 06 October

8 General Information about SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Distribution if the link between the BANK DIRECTORY PLUS (BDP) file and IBAN PLUS (IP) file is required (using the IBAN KEY field), then customers should use the same frequency for both the BDP and IP files. Each record in a SWIFTRef file contains a RECORD KEY. The RECORD KEY is the unique identifier of the record in the file. RECORD KEYs are consistent across the daily file set and across the monthly file set. However, in limited cases the daily RECORD KEYs and monthly RECORD KEYs can be different for the same record in the same product. For example, the RECORD KEYs in the IBAN PLUS daily full file can be different from the RECORD KEYs in the IBAN PLUS monthly full file. The field IBAN KEY in the monthly full BDP file contains the record key values of the monthly IP file. If the user updates the IBAN PLUS file to the daily frequency and leaves the BDP file in the monthly frequency, then some IBAN KEY values may cause incorrect references to IBAN PLUS records. SWIFT cannot resolve this issue in the near future. The solution is to align the frequencies for both files. Using the same file frequency is only important if cross-references are used. If crossreferences are not used, then the difference in RECORD KEYs does not cause problems. This issue is caused by the BIC publication date. The BIC publication date is different from the activation date. The activation date is one week after the publication date. In the monthly files, the BICs must be published one week in advance (on the publication date). However, in the daily files, BICs are published on the activation date. This causes a temporary difference in content between the two file frequencies. SWIFT cannot change this process due to our customers' legacy systems. 1.5 Preparation to Upload SWIFTRef Files If you use your existing processes to prepare and to upload directory files into a live system, then SWIFT recommends that you activate all records that do not have a date in FIELD A. Records with future dates located in FIELD A become active approximately eight or more days after the publication date. If your systems are unable to dynamically process the valid from date in FIELD A, then the majority (99.9 percent) can be imported and used (activated) on the file publication date, with an additional import of the 0.1 percent of records on the date specified in FIELD A. Tip The publication time is defined as when the files are expected to be available for download. It is possible for the files to appear online earlier than the publication time. 1.6 SWIFTRef File Formats TXT format is the standard format for all directories, except for the Alliance Bank File. This file is only available in ABE format. The following additional formats are available depending on the type of directory:.abe (a non-readable format designed for Alliance Access and Alliance Entry).CSV (for UK SEPA IBAN Only Directory file).dat.dos.ebc.xml 06 October

Related information Frequently Asked Questions for SWIFTRef Users XML schemas 1.7 Daily and Monthly File Distribution of SWIFTRef Files Overview of file distribution You can receive the files on a daily or monthly basis. The distribution mechanisms are identical. An additional subscription, access, and fee for the daily files apply, except for BIC Archive. A daily feed for BIC Archive is included as a standard feature. All directory files are available on a daily and monthly basis in TXT and XML formats except for the following files. The UK SEPA IBAN Only Directory is also available in CSV format. This full file is published once a month with the monthly full file and once a month with the daily full file. TXT TXT and XML (1) As of November 2018, the BICDU file will no longer be available. 10 General Information about SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Distribution (2) After November 2018, the CCH data will only be available in TXT and XML formats in distinct files: COUNTRY CODE, CURRENCY CODE, HOLIDAY, and HOLIDAY SERVICES. Important The daily cycle files and the monthly cycle files are not interchangeable. Users must choose and maintain one update frequency. Switching from one frequency to the other can only be done exceptionally by loading the full file of the new frequency. Daily cycle files To keep data consistent, all daily files must be applied in the correct order (by date in the file name). SWIFT suggests the customer implements a daily delta file counter, using dates, so that the counter automatically detects if a file has been missed out or applied in an incorrect sequence. The counter must also count empty daily delta files. The daily files do not necessarily need to be applied once per day. They can be accumulated and then applied in a single batch in the correct order. For example, if you want to apply the daily files on a weekly basis, then on 15 June you apply the files of 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 June in this order. Alternatively, if you prefer to keep your monthly update process, then you can apply 30 or 31 daily updates at the end of each month in one go. The benefit of this, in comparison to applying one monthly delta file, is that if there is an urgent data fix made throughout the month, you already have the related update in one of the daily deltas. You only need to apply all outstanding daily deltas immediately to have the data fixed. Subscribers to the monthly updates do not have such fixes available on time. The daily full file is published as a separate file along with the daily delta. Published once a month At 02:00 GMT on the Saturday following the Friday monthly publication day Daily delta file This file contains only the changes of the previous day. For example, on 4 November 2015 at 02:00 GMT, SWIFTRef provides the daily files with file date To download this file, select 03 Nov 2015 in the Date Selector. Published once a month At 02:00 GMT on the monthly publication day (a Friday) Related information SWIFTRef Directories Publication and Activation Dates on page 15 Distribution channels 1.8 File Size of SWIFTRef Directory Files A SWIFTRef Directory file (for example, the Bank Directory Plus file) can differ in size from month to month. Customers should not be concerned about these differences. One month the delta file may contain fewer rows than the previous month. The following month may contain a major change (for example, a change to the GROUP_KEY of hundreds of thousands of rows), and the size may increase greatly. The size of the file depends on the number of A/M/D records (that is, added, modified, and deleted records). This determines the size of the DELTA file, which changes every month. 06 October

12 SWIFTRef FileAct Service and Automated Download Service 2 SWIFTRef FileAct Service and Automated Download Service 2.1 SWIFTRef FileAct Service Information about the FileAct service All SWIFTRef files are available through FileAct, except for the BIC Directory in XML format. The TXT version of the BIC Directory is available through FileAct. All SWIFTRef directories are accessible from 02:00 GMT on the monthly publication date (see SWIFTRef Monthly Directories Publication Schedule on page 14). Network fees are charged based on the size of the file. See the Price List for SWIFT Messaging and Solutions. Note Ordering Although published FileAct distribution officially starts at 02:00 GMT, the files may appear in the FileAct queue earlier or later than the published time. To provision the files to be pushed through FileAct, go to the ordering pages on Click Place orders, then select Subscribe (Test) or Subscribe (Live). Complete the subscription/change form. You can select individual files or the full package for download. You can select current and previous versions of directory files. Clear the check box to cancel file distribution. Information about the files All files are compressed with the MD5 check file and the SHA256 check file. The ZIP container includes these checksums. The SHA256 checksum replaces the md5sum, which will be removed at the end of December For files received through the Directories Over FileAct service, sha256sum.txt will be added at the end of October XML files are typically four times larger than TXT files. File re-push To request that a file be re-sent (that is, re-pushed), contact Support using the. Make sure that you specify which files must be re-pushed when you report the case. See also the Directories over FileAct Implementation Guidelines. The first re-push is free of charge. Subsequent re-push requests are priced at EUR 1000 per ten pushes within the publication month. Provisioning Provisioning of store-and-forward queues always defaults to level 2 DN. If you require level 3 DN configuration, then you must send an to E2E-Reference- Data.Generic@swift.com to request the change. 06 October

13 SWIFTRef FileAct Service and Automated Download Service Provisioning must be completed at least two weeks before the FileAct distribution scheduled delivery for the current cycle. Emergency changes to file provisioning requested after the cut-off date are charged at EUR Related information Directories over FileAct Implementation Guidelines 2.2 SWIFTRef Automated Download Service All SWIFTRef data files are available through automated download except for EURO1/STEP1. You can select from all the directory packages that you subscribe to. All files are compressed with the MD5 check file and the SHA256 check file. The ZIP container includes these checksums. The SHA256 checksum replaces the md5sum, which will be removed at the end of December For files received through the Directories Over FileAct service, sha256sum.txt will be added at the end of October All monthly SWIFTRef Directories are available for download automation at 02:00 GMT (maximum) on the morning of the publication date.
