4 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS Read all instructions carefully before use. Retain manuals for future reference. Use this product only in the manner described. Only use a water-dampened soft-cloth to clean the surface of this product. Use electronic devices in well ventilated areas & not exposed to excess vibration. The following will damage this product: any liquid such as water or moisture, extreme heat; cold; humidity, dusty or sandy environments. Only place this device on stable surfaces and ensure that any attached cables are secure and will not cause the device to fall. If charging is required, it is recommended to thoroughly charge electronic devices for the first time overnight. Subsequent charges can be as needed. During charging, or extended use, the product may become warm. There are no user serviceable parts in this product. Un-authorized attempts to dismantle or repair this product will void product warranty and may result in dangerous electric shock. Do not use this product if you are in control of dangerous machinery such as a motor vehicle. Remove any power or data cords by pulling them from the plug and not the cord. Using this device near other electronic devices may cause interference. 4

Speaker Built in speaker (rear or device) GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PRODUCT Power On/Power Off Slide the Main ON/OFF Switch to the on position. When the device is off, press and hold the On/Off button for 3 seconds to turn it on. When the device is powered on, press and hold the On/Off button for 3 seconds to turn it off. 6

7 2. Connecting to a Computer Turn the player on, and then connect the player to the PC with the USB cable (included). The PC will detect the ebook reader as a standard USB mass storage device as soon as it is connected. The Micro SD card slot will only be displayed if a card is inserted. EBook functions are not accessible when connected to a PC 3. Initial Charge and Subsequent Charges We recommend that your first three charges are up to 12 hours each. This will help optimise battery life as well as provide a longer usage time. Subsequent charges only need up to 5 hours. 4. Recharging the Battery This player is powered by a special Li-ion polymer rechargeable battery and can operate continuously for over 7-8 hours when reading an e-book. When the battery becomes weak, connect the USB cable to your device via the USB port. It normally takes about 4-5 hours for a full recharge. 5. Default folders The only default folder on the EBmulti-EB850 is.adobe-digital-editions. This folder is required to store all purchased and borrowed ebooks. Other folder for storing MUSIC, VIDEO or other files can be created as needed through the Computer Window when the reader is connected to the computer in the same manner as they are created on any other drive on the computer. 6. Using the Micro-SD Card (Not Included) This e-book supports micro-sd memory cards up to 16GB capacity for storing thousands of books, music and pictures. To begin operation, slide the micro-sd card into the slot. The contacts of the card should face down away from the screen when inserting. Push the card gently until it clicks into place. To eject the card, just push it in slightly and it will spring back out. Note1: Default folders are created on the e-book and also on the micro-sd card. In this event it is possible to see two folders with the same name during navigation. Note 2: If files are saved and used from the micro-sd card, they will still be displayed in Browser History list even if the micro-sd card is removed but they cannot be opened until the card is inserted again. 7

8 MAIN MENU The Main Menu consists of the following sections: 1) Browser History 2) ebook 3) Music 4) Video 5) Radio 6) Record 7) Photo 8) Explorer 9) Game 10) Settings 1. Browser History Browser History: This will display your recently viewed files. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to select "Browser History" and press the Enter button to enter. Then press UP/DOWN button to select the option you want and press the Power button to enter/open the document. Press the Enter button to display the management list and select the option Del: delete selected enter, Delete All: delete all entries on list or exit: exit the option list. Historical records are only deleted in this menu. Press Return button to return to the previous menu. 8

9 2. e-book EBmulti-EB850 USER MANUAL Press UP/DOWN buttons to select e-book and press the Enter button to enter. 6 options for displaying the ebook order are shown. 1. By File name: Displays all the ebook in order as per the file name for each file. 2. By Title: Displays all the ebooks stored on your reader (including the SD card in fitted) in title order. 3. By Author: Displays all the ebooks stored on your reader in by Author. Note: This selection requires the Authors details to be added in the files properties. Not all file types support this option. 4. By Dir: Displays all the directories on the ebook reader. 5. By Thumbnail: Displays the ebooks stored on your reader as Book Covers. Note: note all files support this option. 6. MediaLib Update: This option updates the files stored on your reader and the Micro SD card if fitted. Select the ebook to be viewed by one of the above methods by using the up and down buttons. Press the Enter button once the desired file is highlighted. 9

10 2.1 Viewing ebooks When view an ebook you can use the buttons to access the following features or submenus. Button Action Return Returns screen to previous menu Up & Down Selects next or previous page or section to display Left & Right Selects next or previous page or section to display Rotate Rotates the display between portrait and landscape. Press the Zoom button to display the Zoom options (Zoom options dependant on file format to be displayed) Option Scale to S Scale to M Scale to L Scale to XL Action Scales font to small Scales font to medium Scales font to large Scales font to extra large Use the up and down buttons to select the correct option and then press the enter button to confirm. Note: High resolution and graphic rich files may take a few second to resize after option is selected. Different files types may produce variations in available Options Press the Enter button to display the following options. Option Action Jump to Page Use the left, right, up and down buttons to select the page number to jump to and then press the Enter button. Save Mark* Saves the current page as bookmark. Load Mark* Jump to a previously Saved Mark. Del Mark* Deletes previously save Marks. Browser Mode Auto: Pages are turned automatically at preset intervals. Manual: Pages must be turned manually when required. Flip Time Select the time to automatically turn the pages when browser mode is set to Auto. 10, 15, 20, 25 & 30 seconds. Information Displays information about the current file you are viewing (if data is available). Table of Contents Displays the table of contents for the current ebook. (if included). Use the Up, Down, Left and Right button to highlight a chapter then press Enter to select. 10

11 *Note: Marks are saved for each book. Up to 5 marks can be saved for each book. When the limit is reached, the oldest mark will be deleted in favour of the new Mark. 3. Music Player Use the Up/Down Left/Right button to select the Music icon in the main menu. Press the Enter button to confirm the selection. 3.1 Media Library options Use the Up/Down button to select the option and then press the Enter button to confirm the selection. Option Description Resume Play Resumes the playback of the last selected track All Music Displays all music files stored on the reader and SD card (if fitted). Artist* Displays all tracks in order By Artist Album* Displays all music files in order By Album Genre* Displays all music files in order By Genre My Favourite** Displays all music files tagged as Favourite Record Displays all files recorded by the ebook reader Dir List Use the Up/Down & Left/Back button to navigate through all the folders on the reader (and Micro SD card if fitted) to display music files. Press the Enter button to play the selected file. Hold Recollection Displays the breakpoint for the last 3 songs. MediaLib Update Use this option to update the Media Library list. Recommended after adding new files to reader or inserting new Micro SD card. * These fields require information to be included in the files ID3 tag. Files that do not have this information included may not be displayed in some option. Please use DIR List option to view folder containing untagged files. ** File can be tagged as Favourites in any listing by tapping the ON/OFF button briefly and the pressing the enter button to confirm adding file as Favourite. Note: Copy protected files will be displayed but will report Play Error when playback is attempted. DRM protected music files cannot be played on this reader. 11

EG: MUSIC_FILE.MP3 must be accompanied by the file MUSIC_FILE.LRC for the lyrics to be displayed. 3.3 Music Playback Options The following buttons can be used during music playback. 13 By pressing the enter button during music playback you will get the following options. Use the Up/Down and Left/Right button to navigate through and select options. Press the Enter button to confirm selection or press the Return button to cancel and exit menu. Play Mode In Order Plays the Music files in order as per folder/list Shuffle MS EQ 3D Audio is played in 3D Bass LEQ Randomises the player order of folder/list Audio is played with the bass emphasised Equivalent Continuous Noise Level EQ Sel Select a preset or create your own equaliser setting for music playback. Select from the following options. NORMAL MS EQ ROCK POP CLASSIC BASS JAZZ USER EQ User EQ Setup Use the Left/Right button to select the EQ band to adjust and then use the Up/Down button to change the frequency response. When complete, use the Left/Right button to select the YES icon and then press the Enter Button to confirm the changes or the NO to cancel and return to the music playback screen. Display Lyric Displays lyric files for current track if available Closed Turns Lyric files display OFF. 13

14 5. Video EBmulti i-eb850 USER MANUAL Use the Up/Down Left/Right button to select the Video icon in the main menu. Press the Enter button to confirm the selection. Use the Up/Down button to navigate to the folder that contains the video to be viewed and then press the Enter button to select. All video files are played in landscape mode automatically. 5.1 Video Playback Options By pressing the Enter button during Video playback you will get the following options. Use the Up/Down and Left/Right button to navigate through and select options. Press the Enter button to confirm selection or press the Return button to cancel and exit menu. Option Description Select Time Play Use the Left/Right button to select the value to adjust and then use the Up/Down button to change the hour/hour minute/minute. When complete, use the Left/Right button to select the YES icon and then press the Enter Button to confirm. Player will screen. Playback Size Normal Original Size Full Screen Displays file in native ratio but zooms to size of screen Displays the video in native size. (if smaller than display) Stretches video to fill screen (Some distortion may be noticed) Brightness Set the backlight brightness fro playback 1=Bright to 5 = Low 14

15 6 Radio EBmulti IMPORTANT: EARPHONES MUST BE CONNECTED WHILE THE RADIO FUNCTION IS BEING USED. RADIO CAN NOT BE TUNED IF EARPHONES ARE NOT PLUGGED IN. The reader will automatically find the next available station. Use the Up/Down Button to adjust the volume as required. Press the return button to save the file or exit. Press the Enter button to change the recording rate or the recording volume. Recordings will be named automatically starting with FMRC and then numbered sequentially for each recording. Playback of recorded files is done through the Music playback feature Record files are saved in the WAV format and are compatible with most music playback devices. 7 Record The feature is as explained above except that it record from the inbuilt microphone on the base of the reader. All files are saved with the prefix VREC and then numbered sequentially for each recording. 17 8 Photo EBmulti-EB850 USER MANUAL Use the Up/Down Left/Right button to select the Photo icon in the main menu. Press the Enter button to confirm the selection. Use the Up/Down button to navigate to the folder that contains the pictures to be viewed and then press the Enter button to select. Use the Up/Down button to select the picture to be viewed and then press the Enter button. Press the Zoom button to cycle through the zoom options for the viewer. Press the Enter button to select the Slideshow settings for the images. Available times are 5, 10 or 20 seconds or OFF. Note: Pictures are displayed in their native orientation. Landscape pictures will be displayed across the centre screen. To make best use of the screen, the orientation of the image can be changed on a person computer. 17

18 6. Explorer EBmulti-EB850 USER MANUAL Use the Up/Down Left/Right button to select the Explorer icon in the main menu. Press the Enter button to confirm the selection. Use the Up/Down button to navigate to the folder you wish to view the content of and then press the Enter button to select. Use the Up/Down buttons to locate the file and then press the Enter button. Use the Left/Right buttons to scroll through the file list a page at a time. The Explorer will automatically launch the correct viewer for the type of file you have selected. Press the Return button in any view to return to the Explorer window. Files can be deleted through the Explorer by using the Up/Down buttons to select the file and then press the Play/Pause button. Press the Enter button confirm deletion or press the Left/Right button to highlight the NO option and then press the Enter button. IMPORTANT: Files deleted from the ebook reader cannot be recovered please delete files with care. 18

19 8. Settings EBmulti-EB850 USER MANUAL Press UP/DOWN buttons to select "Setting" icon and press the enter button to select. Press UP/DOWN button to select the option and press the Enter button to confirm. Please see below for the settings details. Option Description Display Settings Set the time for the backlight to turn off after last button Light Time press. Options are 5, 10, 15, 20 & 30 seconds or Always on. Brightness Sets the backlight brightness. Options are level One, Two, Three, Four or Five. System Settings Restorable Restores the ebook Reader to factory Defaults. Language System information AutoShut time Time Calender Calculate Font Set Key Lock Time Erase Activation Record Sets the time from last button press that the keys are locked to prevent accidental operation. Press Play to unlock the buttons when locked Erase the Activation record stored on the device after it has been connected to Adobe Digital Editions. Re Activation will be required for any PC that the reader is attached to. Support multi-language such as Chinese, English, and German and so on. Displays System information. Sets the Auto Shut off time. 3, 5 and 20 minute options or no Auto shutdown. Set Time and Date. Display the Calender. A basic Calculator. Use the Left/Right/Up/Down buttons and the enter button to select and use the buttons as required. Change the font used in the system menus. (does not alter fonts used in ebooks) 19

20 8.1 Setting the time and date Use the navigation buttons to highlight the Settings Icon on the main menu and then press the Enter button. Use the down button to highlight the Time option in the settings menu and then press the Enter button. Use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the current field and the press the left/right button to progress to the next field or retreat to the previous field as required. When all field are correct move to the YES field and when it is highlighted, press the enter button to save the correct time/date. 9. File Management 9.1 Connecting e-book with The PC Connect the USB cable provided to a spare USB port on your computer and then the other end to the USB port on the e-book. The PC will automatically load the drivers and connect with the reader. The Reader will display a USB icon on its screen when connected. The reader will be displayed as 2 removable disks. The first will be the onboard storage. The second will be the Micro SD card slot on the reader. The second will only be accessible when there is a card in the slot. If the e-book reader does not connect to the PC please try to reset the reader and reconnecting. 9.2 Manage files When the reader is connected and correctly identified by the PC, you will see it in "My computer" window. You can move, copy or delete files or folders through computer. The e-book id locked during this operation. After you disconnect the equipment from PC safely, the e-book will be unlocked automatically. 20

21 9.3 File Support The player supports the following file types: ebook: TXT, HTML, EPUB, PDF, PDB, DOC, RTF. Video: RM, RMVB, 3GP, FLV, AVI, MP4, VOB, MPEG, ASF. Music: MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE. Images: JPEG (jpg), BMP. NOTE: RTF and DOC formats must be under 500KB in size. Video file resolution and bit rates should be kept as low as possible to ensure smooth playback and reduce any sound sync issues. Video resolutions should be kept to approximately the screen resolution. Some trial and error may be necessary to find the best balance between files size and quality. HOW TO DOWNLOAD DRM EBOOKS Before transferring any digital books to the e-book reader please ensure that the time and date on the EBMULTI-EB850 has been set correctly. Miss matched time/date between PC and the e-book reader may cause problems with DRM enabled files. 1. Using your computer, log on to and use the search field to find the software download Adobe Digital Editions and complete the instillation process as described. 2. After the instillation, register for an account. You can then use this account to download a test files and check you instillation if required. Further ebooks are available at 3. When downloading DRM ebooks from the above link, a progress bar will appear. Once completed the finished ebook can then be transferred to your EBMULTI-EB850 ebook reader 4. Turn your EBMULTI-EB850 ebook reader on and connect the ebook reader to the PC using the supplied USB cable and begin the U-Disk function. 5. RK BOOK will now be shown in the Bookshelves of Adobe Digital Editions. You can now drag and drop you downloaded books to the e-book Reader to begin the transfer to the EBMULTI-EB850 ebook reader. 6. The transferred ebook can now be found in the Digital editions folder for viewing. 21

22 PURCHASE EBOOKS FROM BORDERS 1. Download and installs Adobe Digital Editions as described earlier. 2. Visit Borders online and create an account to purchase you ebooks here 3. Search through the ebooks section, choose and purchase an ebook. 4. Open the My elibrary page on the Borders website to confirm your purchase. 5. Click the Download file. (Adobe Digital Edition users) link under the open book button. 6. Save the file to your computer. 7. Double click on the downloaded file and select Adobe Digital Editions from the open with window. 8. Adobe Digital Editions should now launch and download the purchased book. When the download is complete the book is displayed in the Purchased Bookshelf. 9. Connect the EBMULTI-EB850 to the PC and transfer the ebook as described earlier. Hints and tips for using Adobe 1. Once the software has been downloaded and activated it is then registered to that computer s user name. Other user names will not be able to access the account. 2. Each account can activate six (6) ebook devices only. Subsequent activations will disable the account. 3. Once an ebook device is activated with a specific account, it can-not be activated with other accounts. 4. If you need to reset your ebook activation to create another account, you will need to power off and power on the device while pressing the UP button for around 8 seconds to access the reset feature. Use the directional pad, select DRM Hard Reset and press the M button to confirm. Then input the password 8299 to clear the activation so a new account can be created. After powering off the unit one more time, it can be used normally. CHARGING THE EBMULTI-EB850 The EBMULTI-EB850 will charge when connected to a powered (live) USB port on your computer or to an AC to USB charger (not supplied). When connected to a PC for file transfer it will not be possible to see the battery status icon on the main menu screen. Once you have completed file transfers please use the USB safe removal tool to stop the connection but do not unplug the EBMULTI-EB850 from the PC. Charging the EBMULTI-EB850 should take approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete. 22

23 Problem EBmulti-EB850 USER MANUAL TROUBLE-SHOOTING Solution The ebook will turn itself off after a few seconds Check that the battery is charged. No volume is heard when playing music Adjust the volume level (Buttons 10 & 11) Video playback is not smooth Resolution of video file may be too high. Reduce resolution and video bitrates of file. Screen is hard to see in bright light. Adjust the screen brightness in the system menu. Avoid using the reader in direct sunlight. The ebook reader will not turn off while charging If the EBOOK EB850 is turned off while connected to a power supply it will restart after approximately 30 seconds. This is normal. Large files take a long time to load. Large, graphics rich PDF documents can take several seconds to load and to display the next page. If possible locate a lower resolution file. The EBOOK-850 will not connect to the computer correctly. 23
