This slide identifies the EPC network elements and their primary function. Section 1 Module 2 Page 2
The primary signaling and control functions of the MME are identified on this slide. Section 1 Module 2 Page 3
9471 MME hardware and management. The Alcatel-Lucent 9471 MME currently supports a single-shelf or two-shelf configuration. Available local GUIs include MI-Agent GUI 8950 ID GUI IG: Instructors can get the LM5.0 release customer documentation posted on the internal review site: MME Technical Description ( ) Section 1 Module 2 Page 4
This slide identifies the subcomponents of the MME: the OAM server, the MME Application Function (MAF), the MME Interface Function (MIF); the MME Packet Handler (MPH) service; and, illustrates the interfaces between them. The MIF decides which MAF will perform the application function. The OAM server communicates with the 5620 SAM and communicates with both the MIF and MAF. The MPH service terminates the external signaling SCTP, UDP and TCP stacks to offload the MIF from this function. This slide also shows the interfaces from external components that terminate towards the MME subcomponents. Details about specific interfaces are addressed in Module 2. MME subcomponents: OAM Server: Supports OA&M functions and graphical user interfaces MME Interface Function (MIF): Provides paging broadcast and link management services Selects appropriate MME Application Function (MAF) to handle UE session Distributes messages to the appropriate MAF MME Application Function (MAF): Provide mobility and session/bearer management for user sessions and procedures Store UE Contexts in memory Responsible for selecting the SGW MME Packet Handler (MPH) service Terminates the external signaling SCTP, UDP and TCP stacks to offload the MIF from this function. Lawful Intercept (LI) as mandated under the Communication Assistance For Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) enhances the ability of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to conduct electronic surveillance to monitor a person's telephone, broadband internet, and VoIP traffic in real-time. IMC (Interception management center)/ LIG (Lawful Interception Gateway) Section 1 Module 2 Page 5
This slide identifies the primary functions of the SGW. ECM: EPS Connection Management NAS: Non-Access Stratum Section 1 Module 2 Page 6
This slide identifies the primary functions of the PGW. SDF Service Data Flow An aggregate set of packet flows that matches a service data flow template. QCI - QoS Class Index Section 1 Module 2 Page 7
This slide identifies the SGW and PGW hardware and management (Configuration and OAM) The Alcatel-Lucent LTE solution leverages service router technology by using the 7750 SR-12 (12-slot) service router in the network SR - broadly deployed, full-featured Service Routing platform Field-proven as fixed edge/core in with % availability with non-stop services Full set of IPv4/IPv6 routing capabilities to tie directly to IP aggregation and backbone Integrated and virtualized L2 and L3 services to manage mobile network overlays 7750 SR product website: A!!?LMSG_CABINET=Solution_Product_Catalog&LMSG_CONTENT_FILE=Products/Product_Detail_ xml Instructor Guide: Mobile Gateway - Integrated Service Module (MG-ISM) integrated card consists of an MG-ISM base card and two MS-ISA. The card type is configured as ism-mg One MS-ISA MDA is auto-configured as a control plane ISA. The other MS-ISA MDA is configurable based on the application. Recommended that MG-ISM, IOM3 and SF/CPM be equipped for 1:1 redundancy 7750 SR documentation website (Login required): VzW is using the Cisco ST-40 for their PGW Section 1 Module 2 Page 8
This slide identifies the subcomponents of the SGW: MS-ISA, ISM-MG, (collectively the MG-ISM), and the CPM; and, illustrates the interfaces between them. This slide also shows the interfaces from external components that terminate towards the SGW subcomponents. Details about specific interfaces are addressed in Module 2. SGW subcomponents: CPM - Control Processor Module - Provides the mgmt interface to the EMS and downloads the routing and switching tables to the ISM-MGs when they boot. MG-ISM (Mobile Gateway-Integrated Services Module) - The software load and configuration of the MG card bundle determines if the MG-ISM performs as a PGW or an SGW. ISM-MG (Integrated Services Module-Mobile Gateway) Contains bays for two MS-ISAs Makes the routing decisions and performs QoS enforcement. It also communicates with the CPM for management purposes via the 7750 SR s backplane. MS-ISA (Multi-Service-Integrated Services Adapter) Provides key functionality of the SGW - provides identification of applications to enable dynamic per-service, per-site, and perapplication QoS policy control. IOM3-XP (Inpout/Output module base board) with 2 MDA (Media Dependent Adapter where the data is formatted) Section 1 Module 2 Page 9
This slide identifies the subcomponents of the PGW: the MS-ISA, ISM-MG, and CPM; and, illustrates the interfaces between them. This slide also shows the interfaces from external components that terminate towards the PGW subcomponents. Details about specific interfaces are addressed in Module 2. PGW subcomponents: CPM - Control Processor Module - Provides the mgmt interface to the EMS and downloads the routing and switching tables to the ISM-MGs when they boot. 11 This slide identifies the primary functions of the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) The PCRF is the policy management entity. PCRF is a control plane device designed to manage the policies for user traffic. PCEF Policy and Charging Enforcement Function IG only: Note: Verizon's choice is a Camiant PCRF product, which they use in IMS. More details about functionality: Rx RESTful API on the DSC for on-demand EPS network policy management. Content service providers can develop applications to interface with the DSC for EPC network policy management Subscriber management on the DSC via web services allows users to import and export subscriber records between their HSS and DSC easily via web services Usage management for actively managing subscriber traffic in addition to the policy rules Section 1 Module 2 Page 11
This slide identifies the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) hardware and management The PCRF is hosted on an ATCA platform from Alcatel-Lucent or a SUN X4170 platform DSC supports ALU ATCA platform, or SUN rack-mount server Selecting the platform depends on the environment of the deployment, and is assessed per customer The 5780 DSC software is identical between the ATCA and SUN platforms Instructor Guide Only: From HW point of view, the ATCA platform 5780 DSC uses common ATCA blade types [same used by MME and other products]... the blades become "DSC" blades after loading the software. Section 1 Module 2 Page 12
This slide identifies the subcomponents of the PCRF: OAM servers, PCRF PM, and PCRF DPA; and, illustrates the interfaces between them. This slide also shows the interfaces from external components that terminate towards the PCRF subcomponents. Details about specific interfaces are addressed in Module 2. PCRF subcomponents: OAM server NBI to 5620 SAM, Web Console, provisioning interface, shelf management, SU/Patch Control, Policy Management Co-located with DPA Policy processing module (Policy PM) Maintains IP-CAN session state Application Session Bindings Event Forwarding HR and LBO Handling Policy Decision Function Diameter proxy agent (PCRF DPA) Provides the interface to external entities (PGW, SPR, and PCRF Processing Module, etc.) Load balances request over PCRF Processing Modules Co-located with OAM Server SPR Subscriber Profile Repository - Responsible for storing the subscriber profiles including all details required for determining the QoS SPR database can be connected to the PCRF or the HSS. Application function 5450 ISC (IP Session Control) Section 1 Module 2 Page 13
