1 Wanos on Hyper-V Complete Lab Setup Guide This guide explains how to deploy a complete Wanos lab on Hyper-V. The step-by-step guide includes steps to create Head Office and Branch Wanos VM instances on the same Hypervisor system as well as virtual networks to simulate the Server LAN, WAN Link and Branch LAN. Physical Interfaces can be used to connect the lab to the physical network. Additional Workstation VM s are added to simulate end to end testing. The lab setup uses bridge mode and hence the X/24 address space is used on both Head Office and Branch sides. The lab design is illustrated in the following network diagram:

3 Set up Virtual Switches This section tackles the creation and configuration of Virtual Switches. It is important to configure this before deploying any Virtual Machines. Three Virtual Switches are needed WAN-Link, Branch-LAN and PhyNIC. Launch Hyper-V manager and click Virtual Switch Manager under Actions pane.

4 PhyNIC Select External and click Create Virtual Switch button.

5 Rename the virtual switch to PhyNIC under Virtual Switch Properties. Select the LAN adapter from the drop down list under Connection Type > External network. Click Apply to complete the process.

6 The wizard may prompt a window Pending changes may disrupt network connectivity. Click Yes button to continue. The user may tick / mark the check box, Please don't ask me again, to avoid similar reminders in the future.

7 WAN-Link Select New virtual network switch, choose Internal, then click the Create Virtual Switch button and click the Apply button.

8 Change the Name of the virtual switch to WAN-Link and ensure Internal Network is selected under Connection Type. Click the Apply button.

9 Branch-LAN Create another New virtual network switch, select Internal as the type of virtual switch.

10 Change the Name to Branch-LAN and ensure Internal network is selected under Connection type. Click the Apply button.

11 Deploy and Configure Virtual Machines This section tackles the deployment of Wanos and Windows Appliances. Download Virtual Appliance VHD from Wanos Downloads section and uncompress the zip file to extract the VHD file into a directory of preference (e.g. Downloads). Two Wanos VMs will be deployed to simulate two offices that will be explained in a later chapter. The VMs are named Wanos-HQ and Wanos-Branch. This guide assumes that the user has a Windows-based virtual machine, in VHD format, available for deployment.

12 Deploy Wanos-HQ Appliance On the Hyper-V Manager, click New > Virtual Machine under Actions pane.

13 Optionally, the user can tick on the check box Do not show this page again to prevent the window from showing this page in the future. Click the Next button to continue.

14 Set the Name to Wanos-HQ. Click Next to continue.

15 Select Generation 1 and click the Next button.

16 Set the Startup memory to 1024 MB. Click the Next button to continue. If available Memory is an issue. User may decrease accordingly. Refer to the articles Sizing Guide, Hardware Guide and Performance Guide on Wanos website.

17 Nothing is configured in this page. Click the Next button to continue.

18 Select Use an existing virtual hard disk, click the Browse button, navigate to the extracted wanos VHD image, click the Open button then Next to continue.

19 Review the settings and click Finish to complete the deployment of Wanos-HQ appliance.

20 Configure Wanos-HQ On the Hyper-V Manager, select Wanos-HQ and click Settings under Actions pane.

21 Click Network Adapter, select WAN-Link under Virtual Switch and click the Apply button.

22 Click Advanced Features, tick on Enable MAC address spoofing and click the Add button.

23 Click Add Hardware under Hardware pane, select Network Adapter and click the Add button.

24 Select PhyNIC from the drop down box under Virtual switch and click the Apply button.

25 Click Advanced Features under PhyNIC Network Adapter, tick Enable MAC address spoofing and click the Apply button to add the second Network Adapter.

26 Deploy Wanos-Branch Appliance On the Hyper-V Manager, click New > Virtual Machine under Actions pane.

27 Use Wanos-Branch as the Name of this Virtual Machine. Click the Next button to continue.

28 Select Generation 1 and click the Next button.

29 Set the Startup memory to 1024 MB. Click the Next button to continue.

30 Nothing is configured in this page. Click the Next button to continue.

31 Select Use an existing virtual hard disk, click the Browse button, select wanos-branch, click the Open button then the Next button to continue.

32 Review your settings and click the Finish button to complete setting up Wanos-Branch appliance.

33 Configure Wanos-Branch On the Hyper-V Manager, select Wanos-Branch and click Settings under the Actions pane.

34 Click Network Adapter, select WAN-Link under Virtual Switch then click the Apply button.

35 Select Advanced Features, tick on Enable MAC address spoofing and click the Apply button.

36 Click Add Hardware under Hardware pane, select Network Adapter and click the Add button.

37 Select Branch-LAN from the drop down box under Virtual switch and click the Apply button.

38 Click Advanced Features under Branch-LAN Network Adapter, tick Enable MAC address spoofing and click the Apply button to add the second Network Adapter.

39 Deploy HQ-PC Appliance On the Hyper-V Manager, click New > Virtual Machine under Actions pane.

40 Use HQ-PC as the Name of this Virtual Machine. Click the Next button to continue.

41 Select Generation 1 and click the Next button.

42 Set the Startup memory to 2048 MB. Click the Next button to continue.

43 Nothing is configured in this page. Click the Next button to continue.

44 Select Use an existing virtual hard disk, click the Browse button, select wanos-hq, click the Open button then the Next button to continue.

45 Review your settings and click the Finish button to complete setting up HQ-PC appliance.

46 Configure HQ-PC On the Hyper-V Manager, select HQ-PC and click Settings under the Actions pane.

47 Click Network Adapter, select PhyNIC under Virtual Switch then click the Apply button.

49 Deploy Branch-PC Appliance On the Hyper-V Manager, click New > Virtual Machine under Actions pane.

50 Use Branch-PC as the Name of this Virtual Machine. Click the Next button to continue.

51 Select Generation 1 and click the Next button.

52 Set the Startup memory to 2048 MB. Click the Next button to continue.

54 Select Use an existing virtual hard disk, click the Browse button, select branch-pc, click the Open button then the Next button to continue.

55 Review your settings and click the Finish button to complete setting up Branch-PC appliance.

56 Configure Branch-PC On the Hyper-V Manager, select Branch-PC and click Settings under the Actions pane.

57 Click Network Adapter, select Branch-LAN under Virtual Switch then click the Apply button.

58 Select Advanced Features, tick on Enable MAC address spoofing and click the Apply button.

61 Testing Wan Optimization The user needs to ensure that a file share, Website or FTP site is available on the HQ-PC for testing purposes. A Silesia Corpus test file can be downloaded on the Wanos Wiki site. When using a file share, from HQ-PC, open Windows Explorer and connect to \\ (Wanos-Branch). Copy the file and paste it to a preferred directory within HQ-PC (e.g. Downloads directory). Open a web browser and access Wanos-Branch Web UI at Enter the default username and password: wanos. During the file copy process, a stream of data from Optimized Mbps: Wan Tx and Optimized Mbps: Wan Rx graphs can be seen indicating that WAN Optimization is working.
