5 1. APPLICATION The PD51 converter is a digital device destined to convert the RS-232 interface into the industrial interface. It enables the increase of the bus range and the number of devices in the network with a bus. It ensures the automatic steering of the data flow direction. The RS-232 interface is commonly accepted but since it has a limited range and restricted working possibilities, it is not used in industrial data transmission systems. In almost automation systems and advanced control systems, the interface is used because it has not such limitations and utilises the differential procedure for data transmission, what is its main feature. The PD51 converter is produced in two versions: PD51-A - to be assembled on a rail, with opto-isolation, PD51-B - as portable, without opto-isolation. 2. INSTALLATION OF PD51-A CONVERTER The converter is designed to be fixed on a 35 mm rail ( EN 60715:2002), acc. to the fig.1. 5

Note: Special attention must be paid to the correct connection of external signals (see table 1).! There are three diodes on the frontal plate: l l l yellow (TxD) - signalling the data transmission through RS-232 ( in the converter configuration) or (in the repeater configuration), red (RXD) - signalling the data reception through RS-232 (in the converter configuration) or (in the repeater configuration), green - signalling the supply connection. 7

9 RS INSTALLATION OF THE PD51-B CONVERTER The converter is a portable device supplied from an external feeder. 10 External signals should be connected in accordance with tables 2 and 3, in which the assignment of individual outlets of the PD51-B converter are described. DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION The standard enables the exchange of data of half duplex type. This means that data can be transmitted or received in the same time. The design of the internal system in the converter enables the automatic steering of the data flow direction. It is not necessary to apply additional handshake signals such as RTS. The converter cannot make possible a classical steering of the interface transmitter through the additional RTS signal of the RS-232 interface. The PD51 converter can work with a maximal baud rate up to kb/s, in lines up to 400 m long. When the line length exceeds 800 m, the converter works with a baud rate up to 19.2 kb/s. Between A and B lines of the interface, on bus ends, one should use terminators (resistors). The terminator value should be readjusted to the application. In the environment with unknown interference level it is recommended to observe following principles:! l do not supply the converter/repeater from the network near devices generating high impulse interference, l use network filters for the converter/repeater group servicing the same object, l use metallic screens in the shape of tubes or braids to conduct supplying wires. In these screens, one can also lead the earth conductor, and if need be, network conductors, 10

11 l l one should connect circuits of the communication interface individually in a screen as above, by means of twisted wires, apply the general principle that wires (groups of wires) leading different signals should be led in the farthest distance between them (not less than 50 cm), and crossings of such wires or groups of wires made at right angle. 6. 13 EXAMPLE OF ORDER Code PD51- A means: PD51 - converter/repeater type, A1 - supply voltage: V a.c./d.c., 00 - standard execution, 1 - delivered with an extra quality inspection certificate. 8. MAINTENANCE AND GUARANTEE The PD51-A converter/repeater or PD51-B converter does not require any periodical maintenance. In case of some incorrect operation: 1. From the shipping date, during the period given in the annexed guarantee card One should take the instrument down from the installation and return it to the LUMEL s Quality Control Dept. If the instrument has been used in compliance with the given instructions, LUMEL S.A. guarantees to repair it free of charge. 2. After the guarantee period: One should turn over the instrument to repair in a certified service workshop. The disassembling of the housing causes the cancellation of the granted guarantee. Spare parts are available for the period of five years from the date of purchase.
