IWD 1123 Mobile Technology Overview: By definition a mobility can be defined as a movement that involves changing the position of oneself or an object. Mobility means different things to different people. Some people are quite happy being able to get around town. Others view the world in terms of time distance-four hours from one city to another by bus, perhaps. p Obviously, range of motion is an important aspect of mobility. A more pertinent example of mobility is the ever decreasing size of cellular telephones. What was once considered a "mobile phone" had to be transported in a vehicle. Copyrights 2007/2008 S.R Sulaiman Overview: Continue.. A major step forward was the "transportable transportable" phone, which freed the user from their vehicle but weighed in at about twenty pounds, still huge by today's standards. With the advent of "brick" phones in the mid-1980's came the era of "portable" phones. This continuing decrease in size and weight of handsets has greatly increased the mobility of cellular subscribers. In the field of mobile data communications, Mobility is defined as: The ability to send and receive communications anytime anywhere. Mobility means that both source and destination devices, applications and people are free of the constraints imposed by physical location. Overview: Continue.. Access to an Ethernet port, for example, need not limit one's ability to send and receive data in a mobile WAN environment any more than access to a landline phone currently limits one's ability to place a voice call in an area covered by cellular service. Overview: Continue.. Mobility is NOT Wireless ness Mobility is the ability to communicate anytime anywhere. This is a topological capability-always always being able to "connect with" another party. Ideally, this connectivity can be maintained regardless of the location or motion of the mobile entity. Obviously, wireless ness enables greater mobility than is possible with wired media, especially in-motion correspondence. Device Mobility Devices Included A mobile device (also known as converged device, handheld device, handheld computer,, "Palmtop" or simply handheld) ) is a pocket-sized computing device, typically having a display screen with touch input or a miniature keyboard. In the case of the personal digital it assistant t (PDA) the input and output are combined into a touch-screen interface. Smart phones and PDA s are popular amongst those who require the assistance and convenience of a conventional computer, in environments where carrying one would not be practical. 1
Device Mobility: Enterprise digital assistants can further extend the available functionality for the business user by offering integrated data capture devices like Bar Code, RFID and Smart Card readers. Type of Mobile Device Smart Phones A smart phone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities beyond a typical mobile phone, often with PC-like functionality. There is no industry standard definition of a smart phone. For some, a smart phone is a phone that runs complete operating system software providing a standardized interface and platform for application developers. For others, a smart phone is simply a phone with advanced features like and internet capabilities, and/or a full keyboard. Laptops A laptop computer or laptop (also notebook computer, notebook and notepad) is a small mobile computer, typically weighing 3 to 12 pounds. Laptops usually run on a single main battery or from an external AC/DC adapter that charges the battery while it also supplies power to the computer itself, even in the event of a power failure. Laptops contain components that are similar to their desktop counterparts and perform the same functions, but are miniaturized and optimized for mobile use and efficient power consumption, although typically less powerful for the same price. Ultra Mobile PC The term Ultra-Mobile PC (abbreviated UMPC), or Project Origami,, is a specification for a small form factor tablet PC. It was developed as a joint development exercise by Microsoft, Intel, and Samsung, among others. Intel is also responsible for the Mobile Internet Device, a variation on the UMPC concept. UMPC s run on Windows OS including Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Vista and Windows XP. Others run on specially adapted versions Linux and low-voltage Intel Pentium or VIA C7-M processors in the 1 GHz range. Personal Digital Assistance (PDA) A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a handheld computer also known as small or palmtop computers. Newer PDA s also have both color screens and audio capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones, (smart phones), web browsers, or portable media players. Many PDAs can access the Internet, intranets or extranets via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWANs) Many PDAs employ touch screen technology. Currently, a typical PDA has a touch screen for entering data, a memory card slot for data storage and at least one of the following for connectivity: IrDA, Bluetooth and/or WiFi. Handheld Game Console A handheld game console is a lightweight, portable electronic machine for playing video games. Unlike video game consoles, the controls, screen and speakers are all part of a single unit. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, several companies-- including Coleco and Milton-Bradley--made lightweight table-top top or handheld electronic game devices. Today, these machines are not considered strictly consoles, since they often would only play a single game. The first true handheld game console with interchangeable cartridges was the Milton Bradley Microvision in

The console features a clamshell design, similar to the Game Boy Advance SP, with two LCD screens inside with the bottom one being a touch screen. The Nintendo DS also features a built-in in microphone and supports wireless IEEE (Wi-Fi) standards, allowing players to interact with each other within short range (10 30 m, depending on conditions) or online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service which launched later in the console's lifespan. This was the first Nintendo console to be released in North America prior to Japan. GAME BOY,GAME BOY COLOR The Game Boy Color ( ゲームボーイカラー, Gēmu Bōi Karā?, shortened to GBC) is Nintendo's successor to the Game Boy and was released on October 21, 1998 in Japan and in November 19, 1998 in North America and November 23, 1998 in Europe. It features a color screen and is slightly thicker and taller than the Game Boy Pocket, but smaller than the original i i l Game Boy, and has an 8-bit CPU as did the original Game Boy. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color combined have sold million units worldwide. The Game Boy Color also featured an infrared communications port for wireless linking. However, the feature was only supported in a few games, and the infrared port was dropped for the Game Boy Advance and later releases. The console was capable of showing up to 56 different colors simultaneously on screen from its palette of 32,768, and could add basic four-color shading to games that had been developed for the original Game Boy. GAME BOY ADVANCE The Game Boy Advance ( ゲームボーイアドバンス, Gēmu Bōi Adobansu?, often shortened to GBA) is a 32-bit handheld video game console developed, manufactured and marketed by Nintendo. It is the successor to the Game Boy Color. It was released in Japan on March 21, 2001; in North America on June 11, 2001; in Australia and Europe on June 22, 2001; and in the People's Republic of China on June 8, In early 2003, Nintendo introduced a new Game Boy Advance (model AGS-001) that looks like a pocket-size laptop, with an internal front-light that can be turned on or off, a rechargeable lithium ion battery, as well as a folding case approximately half the original size. In September 2005, Nintendo released a second redesign of the Game Boy Advance. This model, dubbed the Game Boy Micro, is similar in style to the original Game Boy Advance's horizontal orientation, Play station Portable (PSP) The PlayStation Portable (officially abbreviated PSP) is a handheld game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Development of the console was first announced during E3 2003, and it was unveiled on May 11, 2004 at a Sony yp press conference before E The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005,[11] and in the PAL region on September 1, The PlayStation Portable is the first handheld video game console to use an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its primary storage medium. Other distinguishing features of the console include its large viewing screen, robust multi-media media capabilities, and connectivity with the PlayStation 3, other PSPs, and the Internet. Handheld Media Console Media recorders: A digital camera is a camera that takes video or still photographs, or both, digitally by recording images on a light-sensitive sensor. Many compact digital still cameras can record sound and moving video as well as still photographs. Digital cameras can include features that are not found in film cameras, such as displaying an image on the camera's screen immediately after it is recorded, the capacity to take thousands of images on a single small memory device, the ability to record video with sound, the ability to edit images, and deletion of images allowing re-use of the storage they occupied. 3
Handheld Media Console Portable Media Player: sometimes referred to as a portable video player (PVP), is a consumer electronics device that is capable of storing and playing digital media. Digital audio players (DAP) that can also display images and play videos are PMP s. Like DAPs, the data is typically stored on a hard drive, microdrive, or flash memory. Other types of electronic devices like cellphones are sometimes referred as PMPs due to their playback capabilities. Communication Devices Mobile Phones: : also called a wireless phone or cellular phone is a short-range, range, portable electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, current mobile phones may support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, , packet switching for access to the Internet, gaming, bluetooth, infrared, camera with video recorder and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (the exception is satellite phones). Communication Devices Cordless Phones: : or portable telephone is a telephone with a wireless handset that communicates via radio waves with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line, usually within a limited range of its base station (which has the handset cradle). The base station is on the subscriber premises, and attaches to the telephone network the same way a corded telephone does. Unlike a corded telephone, a cordless telephone needs mains electricity to power the base station. The cordless handset is powered by a rechargeable battery, which is charged when the handset sits in its cradle. Communication Devices Pager: : sometimes called a beeper is a simple personal telecommunications device for short messages. A one-way numeric pager can only receive a message consisting of a few digits, typically a phone number that the user is then expected to call. Alphanumeric pagers are available, as well as two-way way pagers that have the ability to send and receive , numeric pages, and SMS messages. Until the popular adoption of mobile phones in the late 1990s, pagers fulfilled the role of common personal and mobile communications. As of 2008, pagers have fallen into obsolescence and are preserved only by niche markets consisting largely of emergency service personnel, medical personnel, and information technology support staff. Future Technology Mobile devices have become a pocket-size mobile multimedia computer with various applications and capabilities to access networked services. Mobile phones have already become an enabling platform for several digital services and applications. Mobile phones are now mobile computers with a wide range of multimedia functionality, e.g., imaging, navigation, music, content management, internet browsing, , and time management. Mobile phones are developing towards being trusted personal intelligent devices that have new fundamental capabilities. Future Technology 4
Future Technology: Navigation Scenario #1 After having breakfast Professor Xi decides to use the remaining hour before her meeting with Professor Williams to take a walk through a London park. It is a beautiful morning. Walking through the city, Professor Xi relies on her mobile device. Her thoughts return to her lectures. She opens her Morph device which shows her a map of the city, her location, and the route. She lifts the device, looks through it, and the device displays the street and the local information on services around her Future Technology: Navigation Future Technology: Transformable Devices A transformation is defined in mathematics as a process by which a figure, an expression, or a function is converted into another that is equivalent in some important respect but is differently expressed or represented. (Nanotechnologies for Future Mobile Devices) Morph has some new capabilities that are not possible with existing technologies: it is a flexible and stretchable device made of transparent materials with embedded optical and electronic functions. Future Technology: Transformable Devices Future Technology: Transformable Devices Buying clothes is easier with the help of a computer aided design (CAD) model of the body. It can be used while visiting virtual stores, but it can also be helpful while shopping in a real store, e.g., it can be used to study how clothes might fit without putting the clothes on! A mobile personal device is a natural gateway between the physical and digital worlds and a user interface that combines them into one experience an augmented reality. 5
