About this document This document contains hardware and software specifications for Smart Wireless Headset pro, describing its capabilities and characteristics. It is intended for developers who want to develop extension apps for Smart Wireless Headset pro. To make the best of this document, you should be familiar with the concepts described in the Specification for Smart Extension APIs document. We also recommended you to look at the code examples described in the Tutorial for Smart Extension code examples document. User interface guidelines can be found in UI guidelines for use of the Smart Extension APIs document. All these documents are included in this documentation kit. 6 Smart Wireless Headset pro The Smart Wireless Headset pro is a Smart Accessory that uses Bluetooth to communicate with the phone. Smart Extension app developers can use the Control API to get access to and gain full control of the screen and keys. The application level shows all Smart Extensions that use the control API. The Smart Wireless Headset pro also supports the Notification API and can display incoming events and read out event texts in the headphones. Figure 1. Smart Wireless Headset pro. The accessory is equipped with: 6

7 API compatibility The Smart Wireless Headset pro is compatible with the following Smart Extension APIs: Registration and capabilities API Notification API Control API Some features are not available when you are developing Smart Extension apps for Smart Wireless Headset pro, but they are accessible through the phone. The following list shows the unsupported features: Widgets Browse notification history Actions in notifications LED Touch screen Vibrator Sensors Display The Smart Wireless Headset pro s display is 128 pixels wide, 36 pixels high and has two colours; black and white. A control Smart Extension app is in control of the entire display. This Smart Extension app sends its images to the host application that converts the images to a format that is supported by the Smart Wireless Headset pro. Images sent to the host application should be in.png format. For text rendering, the recommended typeface is DEFAULT_BOLD. We do not recommended using anti-aliasing when drawing text, since grey pixels will be shown as white on the monochrome display and the text would look strange. Unfortunately you cannot disable anti-aliasing in Android s TextView. Use the drawtext function in the Canvas class instead, see Tutorial for Smart Extension code examples document for examples. For a control extension the Smart Wireless Headset pro supports key events through CONTROL_KEY_EVENT_INTENT or ControlExtension.onKey().Control extensions can use all keys except the power key and the back key. When an Smart Extension app is visible on the display the back key is used to close the Smart Extension app. Each display update must update the entire screen. Images that are smaller or larger than the screen are scaled to fit the screen. Any x or y offset is ignored. 7

8 Battery Smart Wireless Headset pro is a high performance Smart Accessory. It is therefore important to use the battery power wisely. The host application and the Sony Add-on SDK include some functionality to preserve the battery. It is also important that the Smart Extension apps follows these recommendations: Don not use too much white colour in your images. Control Extension: avoid sending full screen images when it isn t necessary (send partial screen-updates instead). Control Extension: avoid using Control.SCREEN_STATE_ON. Background process All Smart Extension apps are run in a service. Android treats services as background processes. Android has a limitation on the number of background processes that can be run simultaneously. When this limit is exceeded the Android system stops the least recently used process. This might happen even if the Smart Extension app is currently showing on the display, since the Android system is not aware of this. Normally this is not a problem for Smart Extensions apps that are only shown for a short while and that the user is directly interacting with. The helper classes in SmartExtensionUtils also contain some functionality to help an extension recover if it was stopped when the user was interacting with an event. For Smart Extension apps that run for a longer time and that should not be interrupted, you can use Service.startForeground() to make the system consider it to be something the user is actively aware of. The side effect is that a notification is shown in the status bar as long as the service is in foreground state. Google Play description The Sony Add-on SDK does not only mean you can create new exciting use cases that might give you the extra edge on competition. It will also give you extra visibility as Smart Wireless headset pro users will be able to filter out your apps on Google Play through Smart Connect. Smart Connect can be installed by all phones (including other brands) running Android, which gives you as a developer a huge potential user base. Users can search for compatible Smart Extension apps via the host application. Your Google Play description should end with \n\nliveware extension for Smart Wireless Headset pro to ensure that your Smart Extension apps are found. 8
