Outline Mobile Clouds: Definition Some applications Santa Cloud Project Brief project description Current development Visions
Mobile Clouds We define a mobile cloud as a collaborative arrangement between closely located wireless devices (e.g., through short-range links) which can also be connected to a cellular access simultaneously. A mobile cloud is a very flexible platform for sharing, exchanging and moving resources efficiently, and in novel ways. We can establish resource pools within the mobile cloud Capabilities and functionalities of wireless devices can be augmented
Mobile Clouds Mobile clouds exploit the fact that wireless devices have multiple air interfaces onboard
Mobile Clouds: Resources Radio Resources Time, Space, Frequency (spectrum), Energy/Power Built-in Active Resources Processing power (CPU, DSP), mass memory, batteries Built-in Passive Resources Sensors: position, orientation, microphone, imaging devices (CCD), temperature, radiation, pollution, etc. Actuators: loudspeakers, displays, etc. Social Resources Individual behind (i.e., controlling) the mobile device and its behavior Groups and their social strategy/behavior Connectivity Resources Air interfaces onboard providing local and wide area connectivity Apps Resources
Mobile Clouds Mobile Cloud: The collaborating wireless devices (or nodes) are portable battery driven devices (mobile phones, portable computers, tablets, etc.) - Wireless devices clearly are energy-limited devices Wireless Grid: The collaborating wireless devices are, in addition, home/office appliances, cars, repeaters, etc. - Devices have larger energy sources or be connected to the power network. Energy limitation is not an issue in these devices
Mobile Clouds Mobile clouds have a composite architecture, Distributed Centralized Types of cooperation in the cloud: Forced, Altruistic, Egoistic. Depends strongly on the scenarios By design mobile clouds are conceived to provide gains to every participating node
Mobile Clouds: Applications Efficient distribution of multimedia contents Cooperative video services exploiting mobile clouds Video transfer and distribution Broadcast, multicast, unicast Improvements in energy efficiency of wireless devices, QoS, etc. 9
Mobile Clouds: Applications Mobile Internet Accessing Internet through the cloud, idle devices help the one currently accessing Internet, parallel pipes of information. Each user is interested in accessing a different content Improvements in accessing time 10
Mobile Clouds: Applications 11 Cloud-2-Cloud A mobile cloud is an efficient and flexible way to connect users to a cloud computing platform The MC can be seen as an interface between users and the cloud computing platform, improving robustness/reliability/qos in the connection. x-as a service concept, x = software, apps, platform, Infrastructure, processing power, resources, etc.
Mobile Clouds: Applications Virtual devices Many users can afford simple terminals, several uses can tie up together their wireless devices to form a virtual device or virtual smart-phone with augmented capabilities Virtual device could support much higher data rates Attractive approach foremerging economies 12
Mobile Clouds: Applications Cloud Sensing/Massive sensing Creating 2D real-time maps of distribution of certain parameters such a temperature, pollution kevels, radiation levels, pollen levels traffic, etc. 13
14 Santa Clouds Project SANTA CLOUDS Services and ApplicatioNs oriented cooperative and cognitive networking: Mobile CLOUDS)
SANTA CLOUDS Project 15
Santa Clouds Planned duration: 8/2011 8/2013 Joint effort between VTT and CWC from the University of Oulu Joint volume over the three years: 180 person months Strategic research funded by Tekes, CWC and VTT Steering group members: Elektrobit, Finnish Defence Forces, Nethawk, Nokia Research Center, Nokia Siemens Networks, Renesas, Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, SaagaTech. International cooperation with Virginia Tech, USA, Aalborg University, Denmark,Trinity College, Ireland, Tecnalia, Spain, BWRC, USA. 16
Project Organization (1/2) 17
Project Organization (2/2) 18
SANTA CLOUDS Cloud Formation Architecture, Topologies and Protocols: The main overall goals include: The skeleton for developing Mobile Clouds. The Architecture of Clouds, for both short range and cellular network. Investigate cloud formation Protocols based on architecture for both uplink and down link Topologies for transporting and distribution of information in the cloud. Cooperative interaction between mobile stations to support operation of mobile clouds.
20 Energy Efficiency of cooperative multicast methods using mobile clouds Simple: Split, Transmit and Share Load reduction: Good for the network Time varying data rates Selection of links (M out of N) Split equal or proportional How much gain can you get? How it varies with M and N? Battery status Knowledge: How to use it?
21 Two-user cloud results Lowest energy strategy at different points of rate region Average energy per bit for the mobile cloud
22 N-user cloud Percent reduction in average energy bit wrt to no cooperation for increasing cloud sizes
SANTA CLOUDS Future Plan Mobile Clouds Dynamics and Maintenance Network Coding for Mobile Clouds Mobile video Mobile Cloud sensing Cognitive Engine for Mobile Clouds Location Awareness in Mobile Clouds Interference Suppression Techniques for Mobile Clouds Mobile Clouds as interfaces to Cloud Computing Approaches for content distribution
