4 Chapter 1 1 Introduction The CRIBS TETRA coverage measurement system is a complete turnkey solution for walk-test RF coverage measurement. Contained within the CRIBS package are the CatchAll-SE RF measurement receiver, a rugged tablet PC with pre-installed software, a high capacity Lithium Ion battery and a padded backpack with a purpose-designed mounting frame. Control of the unit is by means of a tablet PC, provided as part of the package and pre-installed with all the necessary software to minimize set-up time and configuration issues. As well as providing the user interface, the tablet PC drives the capture algorithm and provides on-the-fly analysis. The captured data can be further analysed in the TRAMPS data analysis package that is provided on an installation disk for installation on a PC of your choosing. The CatchAll-SE has been verified to meet the requirements of the EMC Directive for radiated emissions and immunity and meets the necessary standards for sale within the European Union. Warning This is a class A product. In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures. 1.1 Package Contents The CRIBS package contains the following items. CatchAll-SE receiver. Li-ion battery pack. TETRA antenna. Backpack and internal mounting frame and cables. Tablet PC. CatchAll-SE to tablet PC USB cable. TRAMPS USB dongle. 5 Optionally the package may also include some of the following items. GPS antenna. Custom distance trigger-pulse cable. Additional TRAMPS USB dongles. Additional Li-ion battery packs. 1.2 Internal Layout The internal layout of the standard CRIBS backpack is shown in Figure 1. The CRIBS package is supplied with a TETRA antenna with a TNC screw-mount for connection to the antenna socket on the top of the backpack. MAC-UMAN Page 5 of 12

6 Chapter 2 2 CatchAll-SE Receiver The CA2500 CatchAll-SE receiver is a small, low power and light weight measurement receiver for TETRA drive and walk testing. The CatchAll-SE receiver is fixed to a mounting frame in the CRIBS backpack and is ready-configured and connected for conducting walk-tests. Figure 2 CatchAll-SE receiver. 2.1 Powering the Receiver To power up the CatchAll-SE receiver, the battery should be in a charged state and connected via the power switch (on the mounting plate to the side of the receiver). In its normal configuration, the CatchAll-SE receiver will only power up when it detects that the USB cable to the tablet PC is connected and the tablet PC is turned on. This ensures that the unit is not left on accidentally in the backpack. MAC-UMAN Page 6 of 12

7 When powered up, the STATUS 1 LED will flash for a few seconds. Subsequently, the STATUS 1 LED will flash briefly every two seconds (approximately) to show that the CatchAll-SE receiver is still powered. 2.2 Connections The connections to the CatchAll-SE receiver that are used in the CRIBS package are shown in Figure 3. The pin-out is shown below Pin Purpose 1 +12V DC nominal, range: +10V to +18V DC 2 Ground 3 Power supply ON/OFF control Warning Under no circumstances should the CatchAll-SE unit be connected to a mains supply or to a voltage greater than 18 V. Doing so may irrevocably damage the CatchAll-SE unit and will invalidate the warranty. MAC-UMAN Page 7 of 12

8 Pin 3 is usually left unconnected, so that the unit powers on when the USB cable to the tablet PC is connected. Connecting Pin 3 to +12V DC (nominal) forces the unit to be on, regardless of the state of the USB connection PC The PC connector provides the USB connection to the tablet PC. The pin-out is shown below Pin 1 VSS 2 VDD 3 DP 4 DN Purpose RF The RF connector connects to the TETRA antenna and uses a standard BNC connector. Note: An internal RF cable is provided in the CRIBS package that connects to the antenna socket at the top of the backpack. The backpack antenna socket uses a TNC connector GPS An optional GPS antenna may be fitted to the GPS connector. The GPS antenna uses a standard BNC connector RS232 The RS232 connector is not currently used in the CRIBS package I/O The I/O connector can be used to connect an optional distance trigger-pulse cable. 9 Chapter 3 3 Li-ion Battery Pack The Li-ion battery pack allows the CatchAll-SE to operate for at least 6 hours before the battery needs to be recharged. A power indicator and voltage setting button can be found on the top of the battery pack and instructions for their use are included in the battery pack user guide. The battery pack is supplied with an AC charger and full charging instructions are included in the battery pack user guide. 3.1 DC Out Voltage The output voltage of the battery pack may be set to +12V, +16V or +19V. The CatchAll-SE receiver should be used with the default setting of +12V. Warning Under no circumstances should the CatchAll-SE unit be operated with the battery pack set to a DC out voltage of 19V. Doing so may irrevocably damage the CatchAll-SE unit and will invalidate the warranty. MAC-UMAN Page 9 of 12

10 Chapter 4 4 Software 4.1 CDCS-2 The tablet PC supplied with the CRIBS package comes pre-loaded with the required drivers and data capture application (CDCS-2). An installation CD is also supplied. The help files installed with CDCS-2 contain full instructions on operating the software and include a quick start guide. Figure 4 CDCS-2. MAC-UMAN Page 10 of 12

11 4.1.1 Licensed Options A licence file is required to run the CDCS-2 application. Currently, there are two modes that may be enabled in the licence file. Data capture using waypoints. This mode is suitable for performing walk-test measurements where there are no GPS data, for example inside buildings. This mode is licensed in the standard CRIBS package. Data capture using GPS. This mode requires a GPS antenna to be fitted and is suitable for walk-testing or drive-testing where there are GPS signals, for example outside of buildings. Data capture using GPS is an additional licensed option, and is not included in the standard CRIBS package. An initial licence file is pre-installed on the tablet PC. A new licence file will be required for any subsequent upgrades Antenna Gain and Cable Loss The Capture Settings in CDCS-2 include values for antenna gain and cable loss. For the European 380 to 400 MHz TETRA antenna attached to the TNC antenna socket on the CRIBS backpack, these values should be as follows. 12 4.2 TRAMPS The CRIBS package includes an installation CD for the data analysis software, TRAMPS. The software can be installed on any PC with a USB port, and the supplied TRAMPS USB dongle must be plugged into the PC whilst it is being used.
