Nowadays, NFC implementation usually concern in business transaction to replace conventional ways, such as cash and card transaction. But, NFC can be a good opportunity in education industry to support automated several education activities. Nowadays, most of Indonesian people already used Smartphone and familiar with NFC technology, but still don t have opportunity to use NFC because there is no industry or transaction already use NFC tag in Indonesia. This paper discussed NFC design for education industry, especially for attendance system that can be one of university s competitive advantages. NFC can support universities attendance system to make it simple and faster that can replaced conventional way. This study conducted by interview and observation at several universities in Jakarta to know about current attendance system mechanism, thus come up with new mechanism by using NFC technology. The conclusion is that NFC technology could be used to automate attendance system, make it faster and easy to use that can improve university s academic operation performance. Keywords: NFC, Attendance System, Universities Cite this Article: Marisa Karsen, Yohannes Kurniawan, Cadelina Cassandra and Hanny Juwitasary, NFC Design for Attendance System in the University, International Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, 9(6), 2018, pp INTRODUCTION Every industry needs technology to support business process. People want to try new technology to improve quality of business process. Information technology (IT) is all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use information [1]. Nowadays, people are aware for new technology and willing to try to improve business process. This condition also occurs in education industry, as the important industry to improve quality of people. Many universities already use IT to support teaching and learning process, but only few universities already use integrated system for students attendance, such as smart card and finger print. This condition can make attendance system more efficient and computerized, the attendance editor@iaeme.com
NFC Design for Attendance System in the University record will easily managed, monitored, and reduce communication gap between parents and university authorities [2]. It will be more beneficial than we do conventional way by using paper, but raise other problem such as card broken, forget to bring card, and ask friend to tapping other students card. To solve that problem, we need device that always brought by the students to perform attendance system. In this case, our recommendation is Near Field Communication (NFC). Why NFC? NFC is a form of wireless communication technology enabling data transfer by putting two devices close to each other. NFC is a technology that could build communication between your Smartphone and NFC chip without touch the object. To connect two devices together, we only need to bring devices very close together or makes them touch physically. NFC protocol can automatically configure them for communication in a peer-to-peer network [3]. NFC applications include contactless transactions, data exchange, and simplified setup of more complex communications, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Communication is also possible between an NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip, called a "tag" [4]. Here is the comparison among NFC, Infrared, and Bluetooth [5]. Table 1 Comparison among NFC, Infrared, and Bluetooth Features NFC Infrared Bluetooth Active-active Mode Activepassive Active-active Active-active Network Point-topoinmultipoint Point-to- Point-point Type Compatible with RFID Yes No No Less than 0.1 Set-up time sec 0.5 sec 6 sec Costs Low Low Moderate Range Less than 0.1 m 1 m 10 m Speed 424 kbps 115 kbps 721 kbps Based on above table, we can see that NFC has more advantages than infrared and Bluetooth because NFC faster than Bluetooth and infrared, thus with low cost. Commonly NFC has been used to improve business process in terms of payment transaction that can make transaction became faster and efficient, because customer doesn t need to bring wallet for payment. This condition already happen in USA and South Korea and success creates new business process and became people s lifestyle. NFC is compatible with RFID infrastructure. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification which consists of a reader, transporter, and IT system. The difference between NFC and RFID is the store device. RFID is integrated into a carrier object such as a card, while NFC used smart phone as device to store and retrieve data and information. Figure 1 explains how NFC enabled device make transactions using RFID technology. [6] Figure 1 NFC using RFID infrastructure editor@iaeme.com
Marisa Karsen, Yohannes Kurniawan, Cadelina Cassandra and Hanny Juwitasary NFC technology has a number of applications, such as ticketing and payment, retrieving information between devices (device pairing), and supporting both communication from device to device and also a device and a passive tag (read/write mode) [7]. Nowadays, majority of android Smart phone already embedded with NFC feature, but the problem is Indonesia still doesn t have vendor or company that introduces NFC technology. This situation cause Indonesian people don t really familiar with this technology. Because many people in Indonesia still comfortable make payment using cash or card, so to implement NFC technology in Indonesia, we need to use different strategy, such as using NFC as attendance system in Universities. Most of Indonesian people familiar to use Smartphone and willing to try new technology. If we implement NFC technology for attendance system, we will get positive feedback from students and lecturers. Students will be happy because no need to bring card and just bring their Smartphone that they always bring everyday. It also can reduce student cards cost for University. The NFC-based applications simplify various human day-to-day activities by simply touching an object fixed or integrated with NFC tag. Ahmad M.A design web based attendance system that can utilize NFC technology. The system has two main units as shown in Figure 2. The units are reader unit and web server unit. Each of these units has hardware and software components. Essentially, the hardware components for the reader units are NFCenabled mobile devices and tags, while for the web server unit is a computer that can host web services. For those students that already tap their smart phone at NFC tag, the `system will connect to web server and notify the students for attendance verification. We can see the details in figure 2as follows:[8] Figure 2 NFC Attendance System Overview Reader unit can read student information, like Student ID from NFC-enabled mobile device or a tag. After that, web server unit will process attendance verification to the University s server. In this case, NFC used as reader/writer mode, which mode enables mobile devices to read data stored in passive RFID tags embedded in public posters, displays, and products. The security of NFC implementation can be applied as confirmation from users. The user should be given the opportunity to confirm the request (e.g., Do you really want to accept the file? )[9]. Anyway, NFC is a more secure technology than RFID and Bluetooth due to its frequency and short distance specifications [10].It sounds possible to implement NFC technology as attendance system in university but still there are some pre-requisites for this NFC attendance system if we want to implement it successfully such as [2]: (1) university must allow all of the students and lecturers to carry their cell phone and activate their cell phone every time class start; (2) the university has to ensure the connectivity is strong, maybe university must have wifi and server that can handle for about clients; (3) Server data must be always accessible and the integration between subject, schedule, class, lecturer, and student editor@iaeme.com
NFC Design for Attendance System in the University The benefits of this paper are: (1) Provide empirical evidence regarding the potential use of Near Field Communication (NFC) system to support attendance system in university; (2) Provide NFC design and analysis to support attendance system with respect to improve university s operational performance. The research in this paper is limited to only a few private universities in Jakarta as a representative Universities in big city, while universities in remote areas are not included in the scope of this paper. 2. RESEARCH METHOD Writing method for this paper is qualitative by using interview and discussion method with respondents, which are lecturers and students from several private universities in Jakarta to gain more details information about possibility of NFC implementation to support attendance system. Reference sources used are a variety of books, journals, and articles obtained from the library, and also other resources from internet which include electronic book and other supporting sites. Using information or data by quoting the contents of the books or from the internet and using the available data to be used as supporting evidence the authors put forward of a statement. 3. RELATED RESEARCH Based on previous research about NFC implementation as attendance systems, the difficulties of attendance registration process in university can be reduced by using NFC technology. Students can be verified with their device ID, and then system will send real time notifications about their attendance [8]. Other research stated that NFC attendance systems also can be embedded by using mobile camera. NFC reader will read NFC tags, identify the students identity, and send the data to university s server. After that, server will read the data and update students attendance status.[11]by using NFC for attendance systems, there is no manipulation of students attendance data, faster, and easy access [12]. Another research tried to build NFC framework using Google Android and found it as a suitable use for educational purpose. The research extended the android platform and implement gamified activity to increase the usage of the application [13].NFC system in android device can also designed by virtual android elements such as NFC tag and NFC reader as the emulator [14].While user experience of using NFC System as attendance system is also obtained by one of the research and analysed from three points of view, they are teachers, parents, and also from the students. The result shows that using this kind of attendance system, it will give the supervision and reducing doubt from parents because they can receive real time information regarding to their attendance, non-attendance, even if their children late to school [15]. 4. RESULT AND ANALYSIS Based on the previous research about NFC supported attendance system in a university, which concern on NFC attendance system design for universities [7], this research is quite different because we focus on using NFC not only for attendance system, but also to improve universities operational performance. Based on the interview that we conducted the dean's and head of programs in University, the results showed the university needs to consider the network infrastructure before they want to implementation this technology in university. From the students interview result showed that most of students already know about NFC and ever use it for transaction payment. We asked about NFC for attendance systems and students felt suitable because by using NFC it means students can use smart phone to record their attendance in the classroom, which is they will bring their smart phone every time they go to the campus editor@iaeme.com
Marisa Karsen, Yohannes Kurniawan, Cadelina Cassandra and Hanny Juwitasary From the research that has been done, then we design and build attendance system using NFC technology. NFC technology is more advanced rather than the other identification technologies, such as fingerprint technology, barcode, because in reading or rewriting the data on NFC tags does not require direct contact between the NFC tags with the reader. In practice, each student has a student ID card with NFC tags. When lecturers enter the lecture room, the lecturer login to the system using android phone to open the student presenter session, then students can do presence by closer student ID card to android phone lecturer who has NFC connectivity in turn. NFC is a set of technology-based wireless connectivity technology Radio Frequency Identity (RFID) that uses magnetic field induction to communicate between electronic devices in close proximity. The maximum distance required to communicate is 4 cm. NFC technology also allows the exchange of data between gadgets and tools with a close touch. The time required for data exchange is less than a tenth of a second. NFC does not use manual connection settings such as Bluetooth connectivity, NFC already automatically connect both devices quickly as needed. NFC works at MHz frequency with average transfer speed above 424 Kbps. The main target of NFC users is mobile phones. While the operation of the NFC is divided into two modes, namely open (active) and closed (passive). With the current mode the user performs data exchange by utilizing 2 NFC devices. While passive mode only supports one of two devices for sending and receiving data, other devices only function as data recipients. The method that we can used to develop the system is SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle). SDLC consists of several stages including: plan, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. The system designed and created is a system that runs on android based operating systems. The system can scan the information stored in the student NFC tags. The system is written using java android programming language. As a presence record store, the system can be built using SQLite and MariaDB databases. The system will store the student presence records into the local database first, then if the phone there is internet network will automatically synchronized with the database server. Presence system provides report presenting each course with the weekly or semester period in the form of mobile view or web view. On the system that made it there are several menus, namely login, import class data, meeting set, scan, validation, database synchronization, presence report and pre / posttest. Admin and lecturer to setup master data through web. Near Field Communication is an efficient technology for communications with short ranges. It offers an intuitive and simple way to transfer data between electronic devices. A significant advantage of this technique is the compatibility with existing RFID infrastructures [16]. 5. CONCLUSIONS In this paper, we analyze possibility of NFC implementation to support attendance system from lecturers and students perspective, and also provide NFC Attendance System Design for Universities. Most of lecturers and students already know about NFC technology. Further, mostly Smartphone that launched in 2011, such as blackberry, android, and windows already embedded with NFC inside. This condition makes more possibility to implement NFC as attendance system for the universities. For several smart phone that still not embedded with NFC, the University must think about systems backup if the students forget to bring smart phone to campus or their smart phone doesn t have NFC technology. Smart card with RFID reader can be the backup for editor@iaeme.com
