1 AIRGO THE FUTURE OF HANDHELD DEMOLITION AIRGO is a new type of handheld jackhammer or breaker, offering an effortless demolition experience through an ergonomic design. The unique, supportive wheel-arm makes AIRGO easy to lift out of concrete even when the chisel is jammed and roll it to a new location. By avoiding heavy loads, awkward body positions and repetitive lifting, AIRGO takes the strain off the worker, preventing various musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. With its ergonomic wheelarm, anti-dust water spray system, anti-vibration handles and vibration monitoring app, AIRGO keeps construction workers safe, healthy and productive. 1
2 USER RESEARCH IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS & INSIGHTS Interviews Observations User interviews were conducted with construction workers and managers working with demolition, as well as industry professionals who have developed some of the current handheld breakers on the market today. Different work situations and handheld tools were documented with video footage and photos for further workflow analysis. This helped to communicate the identified problems and insights. Testing Comparative testing of different types of handheld breakers (pneumatic, hydraulic, gasoline, and electric), with and without anti-vibration handles, revealed a huge difference in the tool experience and performance. 3 USER RESEARCH ERGONOMICS & INJURY MECHANISMS OVEREXERTION FROM HEAVY LIFTING reportedly causes 38% of musculoskeletal disorders among construction workers in the USA. The repetitive motion of lifting or pulling a heavy breaker out of concrete for extended periods of time makes working with these tools extremely strenuous, especially when the chisel gets jammed. The breaker, which can weigh between kgs, cannot simply be made lighter, since a specific amount of weight is needed to maintain the breaking power and to effectively hold the tool down against the concrete. 4 IDEATION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Sketching Mockups Different sketching methods (thumbnail sketching, marker renderings, and Wacom tablet) were used throughout the project to explore and communicate various ideas. Many levels of physical mockups were created to explore different concepts, which were evaluated by the users. The playful hands-on testing was engaging for the users, who were able to give valuable and detailed feedback. CAD 3D modelling was mainly used in the end of the project to define the shape and details of product. 5 PRODUCT DESIGN SIMPLE & ICONIC AIRGO HAS A SIMPLE and iconic appearance. The rounded parts gives it a friendly touch making it easy to approach, while the sharp cuts maintain a professional feel of precision and efficiency. The slim top and narrow width of the handle, gives AIRGO a light and agile expression and makes it easy to operate in tight spaces. The main volume is placed low and provides good product stability. The yellow color is used to highlight selected parts and key features of the product, bringing the attention away from the more technical parts. 6 ERGONOMIC WHEEL SUPPORT HANDLE, WHEEL-ARM & WHEEL FUNCTIONALITY THE INTUITIVE HANDLE CONTROLS enable the user to manoeuvre the breaker as an extension of the body s natural movements. Push them down and the wheel-arm retracts as the chisel penetrates the surface, pull them up and the wheel-arm lifts the breaker out of the surface. 7 ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS & CONTROLS ANTI-DUST SPRAY, WORK LIGHT & WHEEL-AWAY A SPRAY OF WATER and bright LEDs are directed towards the breaking zone to effectively tie down hazardous concrete and increase visibility during breaking. When working in very narrow spaces/holes AIRGO provides the possibility of manually retracting the wheel getting it out of the way. The Wheel-Away and Anti-Dust Spray functions can be controlled by a simple twist on the handle scroll-wheels, and a light sensor automatically turns on the LEDs when needed. 8 HOSE CONNECTION COMBINING ELECTRICITY, WATER & AIR AS A RESULT of the new functionality including the Anti- Dust Spray, electric sensory controls, and LED work light, AIRGO needs water and electricity besides the pressurized air that pneumatic breakers use today. AIRGO has a new type of combined multi-hose, transporting air, water and electricity from a compressor to the breaker.
