1) HotSync Port: On the bottom of the unit, mates with the cradle. This is the default and does not light the Port LED.

1 Introduction: The Koala PDA has 5 selectable I/O ports, instead of the usual single Hotsync Port. While these ports can be selected using simple software commands, the Koala Utility is designed to allow the user to manually select between the various ports, set the default port, as well as determine which port will be used for subsequent HotSync operations. In addition, it allows for functional testing of the Koala s card reader and printer. The 5 I/O Ports are described here: 1) HotSync Port: On the bottom of the unit, mates with the cradle. This is the default and does not light the Port LED. 2) Side Port DB9: Serial (9-pin) connector on the left side of the Koala. Repeated on the back of the cradle. This lights the Port LED YELLOW. This connector is configured like a PC serial port, and you can plug many devices designed to plug directly into a PC into this connector. If you use this for HotSync, you must have both a Gender Changer AND a Null Modem in the serial cable. 3) Printer/Swiper: Activates the receipt printer output and credit-card swipe input. Lights the Printer LED Green (3rd LED down). This turns on the printer unit automatically, and any other selection turns off the printer. If left on, the printer turns itself off after 5 minutes. 4) Internal Modem (OPTIONAL): 36K modem that connects through the RJ-11 on the side of the Koala or on the back of the cradle. This lights the Port LED RED. 5) PCMCIA Slot: Can be selected when you have an actual card in the slot. This lights the Port LED GREEN. Figure 1 LED Locations and Legends

2 Starting Koala Utility: Locate and tap on the Koala Utility icon as shown below. Once started, the program will give you a display, showing the available ports, with the currently active one highlighted: You can select any of the available ports to become active by tapping on it. The Koala s multiple ports act like the Standard Palm Hotsync port, connected to an RS-232 switch. Changing a port selection simply flips this switch to the device needed at the time. Programs like Koala s version of Pocket Verifier Professional use modem-style AT commands to change the settings of the switch. The Pending indicator <- informs you as to the next Port in line to be selected by default. With no card in the slot, setting it "Pending" will activate it automatically when the card is inserted, and return to the default port when the card is ejected.

3 Battery Monitor: The battery indicator at the top of the screen displays actual battery pack voltage, and can be refreshed by tapping on the battery image. The Koala s Ni-MH battery pack is rated for a nominal 4.8 Volts at full charge, but the Koala, when not actually transmitting or printing consumes so little power that the battery voltage can float at up to 5.85 Volts. The Koala can operate with the pack at any voltage above 4.25 Volts. Printer / Card Reader Test: Tap on the Koala Utility title, and then on the Printer / Card Swipe option.

4 You will see the screen shown below: This option will automatically select the Printer / Reader port. Power is intelligently provided to the printer / reader only while it is selected. Remember, the printer and card reader will shut down after 5 minutes in order to conserve power. When the printer turns on, you will hear the 5 rising tones and you will be alerted to it s shut-down by the 5 falling tones. Pressing the Printer Send will send the text on the line below the button to the printer. This text is initially set to This is the Koala Printer Test, but you can change it to any string of characters you like. Clear Port Stack: This selection is intended for Koala Software Developers. The Koala has the ability to take the current I/O port setting, and store it in memory. This memory storage is known as a stack and operates on a last-in first-out basis. This allows a program to store the current I/O port setting, change the port for use, and restore the old setting when finished. The Clear Port Stack selection allows the user to manually empty the contents of the stack.

5 HotSync Preferences: The Koala has the ability to perform it s HotSync through any one of three I/O ports: The cradle connector (HotSync Port), the Side Port (DB9), and the optional Internal Modem. In order to set the default port for the next and subsequent HotSync operations, tap on the Koala Utility title, and then on HotSync Preferences: You will see the screen shown below: Remember, if you use the Side Port (DB9) for HotSync, you must have both a Gender Changer AND a Null Modem in the serial cable. Using the Optional Internal Modem will require additional setup. NOTE: For normal operation, set and leave the HotSync Preferences in the HotSync Port setting.

6 Battery Meter: This setting is applicable only to the first-generation prototype Koala s. This option will disappear in the production version of the Koala. The purpose of this setting is to properly calibrate the battery meter scale to the Koala: Since each Koala is upgraded to the highest version, as they return from various evaluations, you will probably have Version 1.1. If your battery indicator reads either 2.5 V or V (approx) on a full charge, you have the wrong setting. If your battery reads around 5 volts on a full charge, you have the proper setting. Help: This option will display help text for each available option, and will be updated regularly to reflect common problems and settings. About: This option will display the Version of the Koala Utility, as well as the Firmware Version of the Koala itself.
