5 2 Plan the installation System overview Welch Allyn Connectivity Server (WACS) Terminal server Mobile device running Clinician Notifier software within the hospital network Propaq monitors Modem Laser Printer Acuity LT Central Station Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System The Acuity LT Central Station receives, displays and analyzes information from various hardwired monitoring devices. The Acuity LT System CPU operates with Welch Allyn Acuity LT System software. Patient data, alarms and equipment alerts are presented on the display. Network components included with the system enable connections to the patient monitors and a laser printer. An external modem facilitates remote technical support. The Welch Allyn Connectivity Server (WACS) is an option to the Hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System. WACS consists of a server platform on which Welch Allyn software options are installed. Link To Acuity TM is a WACS option that delivers Acuity System patient information to mobile devices running Welch Allyn Clinician Notifier software. A hospital network can carry information to the Acuity System and carry patient data to the hospital information system (HIS/CIS). The system stores patient data and trend information for up to 96 hours, through the Full Disclosure feature. The system can be expanded to support up to 28 patients: this type of system includes a larger terminal server, a second display, and a trackball.

6 Chapter 2 Plan the installation Welch Allyn Hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System Plan equipment location The following illustration shows typical locations for installation of hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System components. Acuity System bedside jacks are installed in the walls in patient rooms. Data cables are routed from Acuity System bedside jacks to a terminal server and the Acuity Central Station CPU, typically up through the wall and overhead through ceiling access. Display and CPU are on a desk at the nurse s station. Printer is located near the CPU. UPS provides temporary power to components at the nurse s station. Modem connects to the CPU and to a dedicated analog phone line to allow remote access for technical support. Terminal server and wiring terminals are typically located in an equipment closet. UPS provides temporary power to the terminal server. Patch panel terminates data cables.

Directions for Use Chapter 2 Plan the installation 7 Installation plan example The following example shows a typical hardwired Acuity LT System layout. Room 1 Room 2 Room 3 Room 4 Equipment closet (for terminal server and a UPS) Acuity LT Central Station Acuity System bedside jacks are installed in each patient room Room 5 Room 6 Room 7 Room 8 10 feet Room 9 Room 10 Optional equipment closet Note that although the example above shows the recommended use of an equipment closet for placement of the terminal server and a UPS, the equipment closet is optional. The terminal server and UPS can be placed together in either of the following places: Near the Acuity LT Central Station at the nurse s station, if there is adequate space for the terminal server and wiring. For 28-patient systems, there is too much wiring to locate the terminal server at the nurse s station. As far as 300 feet away from the Acuity LT Central Station. 300 feet is the maximum length of wiring allowed between the terminal server and the CPU, and between the terminal server and the Acuity LT System jacks.

8 Chapter 2 Plan the installation Welch Allyn Hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System Installation worksheet Use this worksheet to identify Acuity LT System equipment locations for your facility. Be sure to consider the following: 300 feet is the maximum length of wiring between the terminal server and CPU. 300 feet is the maximum length of wiring between the terminal server and Acuity LT System bedside jacks. Although the 28-patient system only supports the connection of 28 monitors at one time, you can install wiring into 31 rooms. The Acuity LT System supports the first 28 monitors that are connected in any of those rooms. If you try to connect more than 28 monitors at the same time, the Acuity LT Central Station display indicates that connection of additional monitors is not allowed. 10 ft.

9 3 Install Acuity LT System wiring After the installation is planned, qualified personnel can install the wiring for the hardwired Acuity LT System. Power requirements The following power requirements are required at the nurses station and the equipment closet (or wherever the terminal server and UPS are located). Table 1. 14 10 Chapter 3 Install Acuity LT System wiring Welch Allyn Hardwired Acuity LT Central Monitoring System Install wiring Caution All wiring must be installed in compliance with local and state safety guidelines and the following instructions and specifications. To install serial cable Serial cabling is intended for high speed communications between the terminal server and Acuity System bedside ports. 1. Install TIA/EIA-568-compliant unshielded twisted-pair cabling (Category 5 or 5E) between the terminal server and patient rooms. The maximum allowable wiring length between the terminal server and Acuity System bedside ports is 300 feet. 2. In patient rooms at bedside, terminate cabling into plate-mounted RJ45 jacks, located as follows: 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.6 m) from the floor Within easy reach for clinicians: do not locate jacks behind the headboards of beds 3. In the equipment room (or wherever the patch panel is located), terminate cabling into a multi-port patch panel with RJ45 jacks per TIA/EIA-568 standards. To aid in troubleshooting, label all data cables that terminate at the patch panel.

Directions for Use Chapter 3 Install Acuity LT System wiring 11 To install local area network (LAN) ethernet cable LAN ethernet cabling is intended for high-speed communications between the CPU and the terminal server. Take one of the following steps: If the CPU and terminal server are located within six feet of each other, connect them with the supplied crossover data cable. If the CPU and terminal server are not located within six feet of each other, proceed as follows: a. Install a maximum of 300 feet of unshielded twisted-pair (4 pair) cabling (category 5 or 5E) between the CPU and the terminal server. A patch panel is required. b. Install a network terminal for the CPU. c. Install the supplied crossover data cable at the CPU or terminal server network port. Terminate cabling per TIA/EIA-568 standards. To install telephone/data cabling Telephone/data cabling is intended for serial communication between the CPU and the Welch Allyn Technical Support department, via an external modem. 1. Install dedicated, analog, stand-alone direct inward dial (DID) telephone line. The line must not be controlled by the local PBX or switchboard or routed through the telephone switchboard. 2. Terminate cabling with a standard telephone jack.
