Open, secure, scalable, reliable UNIX for POWER5 servers AIX 5L for POWER Version 5.3 an excellent choice for building a flexible IT infrastructure. Among all UNIX alternatives, AIX 5L leverages IBM experience in building solutions that run businesses worldwide. And only one UNIX operating system leads the industry in vision and delivery of advanced support for 64-bit POWER5 platforms, IBM Virtualization Engine systems technologies and affinity for Linux. That operating system is AIX 5L. Highlights Scalable, open, standardsbased UNIX operating system with Linux affinity POWER5 and IBM Virtualization Engine enablement helps deliver power, increase utilization and ease administration Rock-solid security and availability to help protect IT assets and keep businesses running Accept no limits, make no compromises In today s on demand world, clients need a safe, secure, stable and flexible operating environment to run their organizations. That is why more and more businesses large and small are choosing AIX 5L for POWER, IBM s industrial-strength UNIX operating system (OS), for their mission-critical applications. With its proven scalability, reliability and manageability, AIX 5L is AIX 5L is open and standards-based and is designed to conform with The Open Group s Single UNIX Specification Version 3. It provides fully integrated support for 32- and 64-bit applications running concurrently, in their full range of scalability. AIX 5L supports the IBM _` p5, IBM _` pseries, IBM _` i5 and IBM RS/6000 server product lines, as well as IntelliStation POWER and RS/6000 workstations.

And now, AIX 5L Version 5.3 offers new levels of innovative self-management technologies. It continues to exploit current 64-bit system and software architecture to support advanced virtualization options, as well as POWER5 processors with simultaneous multithreading capability for improved performance and system utilization. AIX 5L V5.3 is enhanced to support the optional IBM Virtualization Engine systems technology innovations available on POWER5 systems including Micro- Partitioning and virtual I/O support. It offers data management capabilities including NFSv4 support, improved system security, enhanced performance analysis and tuning tools and added system management tools. This AIX 5L release underscores IBM s firm commitment to long term UNIX innovations that deliver business value. IBM Virtualization Engine The AIX 5L operating system is a leader in its ability to share expensive systems resources and communication services in order to achieve greater utilization and lower cost. Building on the impressive virtualization features introduced with AIX 5L Version 5.2, AIX 5L Version 5.3 enables even greater physical system utilization for POWER5 processor-based systems through Micro- Partitioning and virtualization of processors, memory, disk, and network adapters. With the introduction of dynamic logical partitioning (LPAR) in AIX 5L V5.2, IBM delivered advanced flexibility and scalability to POWER4 processor-based pseries systems. Using dynamic LPAR, clients can create virtual servers within a server and dynamically add and remove processors, memory and I/O slots from active partitions each securely isolated from other partitions and running its own instance of the AIX 5L operating system without the need to reboot. Now, with AIX 5L V5.3 and IBM Virtualization Engine systems technology, Micro-Partitioning on POWER5 processor-based systems brings virtualization to a whole new level. Through the activation of partitions as small as 1/10th of a processor with increments as small as 1/100th of a processor, Micro-Partitioning technology allows administrators to fine-tune system resource allocations to meet changing business requirements. By allowing POWER5 processors to be pooled or shared between LPARs, Micro- Partitioning technology promotes flexible and efficient use of system resources. Assigning processors to resource pools, allows the system s hypervisor to automatically and nondisruptively balance the available processing power between the LPARs sharing the pool. This feature is particularly useful in environments where multiple system images exist, each with low processor cycle requirements that may occasionally spike. Instead of running these images on separate hardware systems that go underutilized, clients can use micro-partitions to consolidate the multiple images allowing more efficient use of hardware resources. Accounting and chargeback AIX 5L V5.3 introduces advanced accounting capabilities to enable clients to measure and record resource utilization of multiple workloads on a shared infrastructure and conduct chargeback and capacity planning activities based on that information. System administrators can collect usage-based information on processes, file systems and transactions, as well as hardware resources like processors, memory, disks and network adapters. Advanced accounting supports a business model in which a partition is allocated to a single account, and the account is charged only for the resources that are actually used an effective business model for today s on demand businesses.

Enhanced scalability and performance For exceptional flexibility, scalability and availability, AIX 5L V5.2 introduced Capacity on Demand (CoD) enablement support is extended in AIX 5L V5.3. Selected IBM _` p5, i5 and pseries platforms leverage these features to provide some of the most scalable and rapidly adaptable servers available today. In an on demand world, having the agility to scale-up at a moment s notice can be the difference between capturing a flood of orders following a weekend advertising blitz or alienating buyers with slow system response times and poor service. Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD) is a CoD feature which allows clients to install systems with more resources (processors/memory) than are initially required, keeping those resources in reserve until business needs require their permanent or temporary activation. With AIX 5L V5.3, clients gain even more flexibility with different CoD options ranging from Trial CoD to Reserve CoD to On/Off CoD and finally, CUoD. AIX 5L V5.3 offers full 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility to enable businesses to seamlessly upgrade their processing power from previous versions of AIX 5L while continuing to use their investments in storage and networking infrastructure. Clients can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications simultaneously, and scalability has been extended to support greater than 32-way systems. AIX 5L V5.3 also enables simultaneous multi-threading on servers with POWER5 processors. Simultaneous multi-threading is a processor technology that allows the simultaneous execution of multiple threads in a single processor. By dispatching instructions from more than one instruction stream simultaneously, it provides a way to leverage the inherent parallelization of multi-threaded software to achieve a higher system utilization and throughput. The result? A significant increase in commercial application performance versus similar speed processors without symmetric multi-threading. Business continuity AIX 5L features mainframe-inspired availability features. An extensive set of reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features and advanced self-healing and self-configuring features help ensure that AIX 5L maintains high availability for mission-critical applications. AIX 5L Version 5.3 builds upon the RAS capabilities of prior versions including an enhanced FFDC (First Failure Data Capture) to more effectively capture failure data. It also improves system resilience through data capture, analysis and automated recovery. Better handling of spurious interrupts, a SNAP (System Network Application Protocol) interface to capture application data, core file compression and error log hardening are among the additional reliability enhancements. AIX 5L V5.3 also features system hang and lost I/O detection functions to provide automatic recovery options to minimize outage impacts for the system and applications. System trace enables events to be monitored for debugging and profiling and AIX 5L features built-in event (error) logging to capture comprehensive information about hardware and software events.

Another key availability feature included in AIX 5L V5.3 is Dynamic Reconfiguration which, on POWER5 processor-based systems, allows administrators to add and remove processors, memory and I/O adapters to/from LPARs on the fly without disrupting applications or business operations. Finally, AIX 5L V5.3 features an impressive new tool for systems management: the Service Update Management Assistant (SUMA). Using SUMA, administrators can define policies to automate downloads of operating system fixes and entire maintenance levels directly from the IBM _` Support Fix Central Web site and without manual intervention. SUMA frees administrators from the task of manually retrieving maintenance updates from the Web. Systems management and development tools AIX 5L V5.3 offers capabilities that help businesses take advantage of the optional IBM Virtualization Engine systems technologies and flexible resource usage to ensure that critical applications meet user expectations even during periods of heavy, unpredictable demand. For example, Workload Manager (WLM) supports the automatic switching of system resource policies based on time of day that dynamically allows processor cycles, real memory and disk I/O to be divided between jobs. System administrators can translate business needs into policies that automatically recognize both job and scheduling priorities reducing administrator workload and helping to maximize system utilization. Administrators can easily control Workload Manager through System Manager, an intuitive, Web-based console that enables administrators to efficiently conduct a full range of systems management processes. AIX 5L V5.3 features new functionality for System Manager including enhanced resource set and job scheduling capabilities. With AIX 5L V5.3, developers can now take advantage of POSIX Realtime Application Programming Interfaces (API) for easier application porting. These new POSIX Realtime interfaces include barriers, spin lock, clocks, thread options, memlock, priority scheduling, message passing, semaphores, timers and advisory information. Security Certified under the Common Criteria at Common Access Protection Profile/Evaluation Assurance Level 4+, AIX 5L V5.2 makes integral use of strong, industry-standard security and directory technologies. AIX 5L V5.3 expands these technologies with additional support for security standards and a wide range of integrated security features all designed to provide a high level of confidence in the safety of mission-critical processes and applications. AIX 5L V5.3 now supports the new NFSv4 Access Control List (ACL) security protocol for JFS2 and General Parallel File System (GPFS), offering strong security, performance and access control list enhancements. Server-based LDAP authentication and Kerberos-based LDAP client/server connection are key authentication features. Userids may now be up to 255 characters in length subject to application support. AIX 5L V5.3 also offers enhanced filtering for network security and intrusion detection.

Reflecting IBM commitment to industry standards, AIX 5L V5.3 also delivers integrated support for user-based PKI certificates, BIND V9, SNMP V3, Mobile IPv6, Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) v1.1, OpenSSH v3.4, and new cryptographic library support for: AES (Rijndael), SEAL, Mars, Twofish and other encryption algorithms. These features are in addition to continued support for IBM Network Authentication Server (NAS), IBM Directory Server and ICSA Certified IPsec/VPN secure networking. Java security technology offerings include JAAS, JCE/JCE, JSSE, JGSS, and J-PKI. Open Source flexibility AIX 5L offers a wide range of system interoperability features and Open Source tools that leverage increasingly widespread Linux applications and run them in a native AIX 5L environment. AIX 5L affinity with Linux helps enable faster and less costly deployment of multi-platform, integrated solutions across AIX 5L and Linux applications. Many solutions developed for Linux will run on AIX 5L with a simple recompilation of the source code. IBM provides at no charge AIX Toolbox for Linux Applications which is a collection of Open Source and GNU software commonly found with Linux distributions. Because the applications run on AIX 5L, businesses can combine the flexibility of Linux with the advanced features of AIX 5L, including advanced workload management, sophisticated systems management tools, scalability and security. The latest Java technology is included with base AIX 5L V5.3. The IBM 32-bit SDK for AIX 5L, Java 2 Technology Edition V1.4 ships with AIX 5L V5.3. The IBM 64-bit SDK for AIX 5L, Java 2 Technology Edition V1.4 is available on the AIX 5L V5.3 Expansion Pack and the AIX 5L Java Web site at ibm.com/developerworks/java/ jdk/aix.
