Introduction 1 Introduction The STxP70 Toolset is a cross-development system for developing and debugging C embedded application on STxP70 board devices. All STxP70-based devices provide on-chip emulation capabilities through the JTAG port of the device. These capabilities include: code and data breakpoints memory peeking and poking The STxP70 Toolset is enhanced by the STWorkbench IDE. STWorkbench is built on the Eclipse IDE, providing a state-of-the-art IDE for a wide range of STMicroelectronic s toolsets. STxP70 specific plug-ins customize STWorkbench to support the full development cycle of STxP70 target applications, including: program editing project workspace management program building program debugging advanced trace and profiling tools See the STWorkbench data brief ( ) for more information Rev 4 3/10
Introduction STXP70-TOOLSET 1.1 Toolset features The STxP70 Toolset provides an integrated set of tools to match the different stages in the development life cycle of embedded applications. Code development tools (compiler, assembler and linker) Program development is supported by: the stxp70cc compiler, based upon the Open64 compiler and the GNU C language parser (as used by GCC), the compiler therefore supports many GCC C extensions the stxp70-as assembler, based upon the GNU assembler, as the linker, stxp70-ld, based on the GNU linker, ld a complete set of GNU binary utilities A C run-time system that includes the newlib C library newlib is provided in versions with floating point support and without floating point support, in order to reduce memory footprint. Support libraries Other libraries provided, include the multi-context hardware abstraction layer library (libmch) and STxP70 system library (libsys). Code execution The binary image can be executed on an STxP70 hardware target, or on an instruction/cycle accurate simulator connected to the debugger (sxgdb) or the runner (sxrun). Performance analysis tools These tools provide profiling information and performance evaluations based on architectural description, application execution traces and source debug information. Pipeline viewer, for tracing the pipeline behavior of instructions Examples Example projects are provided with the toolset to demonstrate the capabilities of the STxP70 core, this includes an implementation of the Dhrystone 2.1 benchmark. Debug support Support is provided to use the JTAG interface of the ST Micro Connect 2 and various probes from Lauterbach. STWorkbench Integrated Development Environment (IDE) STWorkbench is built on the Eclipse IDE and incorporates the p2 provisioning system. The framework is extended using the C Development Tools (CDT) plugins and additional plugins to assist in the development of STxP70 applications. 4/ Rev 4
Toolset overview 2 Toolset overview This chapter describes the contents of the STxP70 Toolset. 2.1 Software tools The STxP70 software tools include: From the Open64 Code Generation Tools stxp70cc ANSI C compiler From the binutils GNU package stxp70-addr2line stxp70-ar stxp70-as stxp70-gprof stxp70-ld stxp70-nm stxp70-objcopy stxp70-objdump stxp70-ranlib stxp70-readelf stxp70-size stxp70-strings stxp70-strip Convert addresses into file names and line numbers Create, modify and extract files from archives Assembler Profiler Linker List symbols from object files Copy and translate object files Display information from object files Index archive files Display information from ELF files List file section sizes and total size List printable strings from files Discard symbols From the GDB GNU package sxgdb Debugger Rev 4 5/10

Java TM Platform, Standard Edition Runtime Environment (required to run various software packages on the host, including STWorkbench and the Extension IP importer tool) 2.2 Software libraries The following software libraries are provided with the STxP70 Toolset. Multi-context hardware abstraction layer library (libmch) provides a low-level C API for handling contexts. Its features include context creation, context deletion, pending on an event, signaling an event and utility routines. STxP70 system library (libsys) containing the software drivers dedicated to the configuration and control of the Interrupt Controller (ITC) and Timer Counter Unit (TCU) hardware modules. There are two levels of functions: low-level functions that provide a good compromise between performance and code size, and high-level functions that provide the ability to program the peripherals without having to go too deeply into their functionality. 2.3 Multi-Target Trace API Multi-Target Trace (MTT) is an application instrumentation library that provides a consistent way to embed instrumentation into a software application, and selectively transmit the data to a remote client for analysis. The API is portable and independent of the underlying transmission mechanisms. The library provides an abstraction layer between the user application and the actual trace mechanism. It makes no assumptions about how the trace data is made available on remote workstations. For more information see the Multi-Target Trace API reference manual (Doc ID ). 6/ Rev 4
Toolset overview 2.4 FreeRTOS The STxP70 Toolset is provided with the FreeRTOS real-time operating system (see FreeRTOS is licensed under a modified GPL (a copy of this license can be found in the documentation installed with the STxP70 Toolset). The main features of FreeRTOS are listed below, see for a complete list: a free RTOS kernel very portable source code structure, predominantly written in C support for both real time tasks and co-routines queues, semaphores and mutexes for communication and synchronization between tasks, or between real time tasks and interrupts mutexes with priority inheritance stack overflow detection options no restrictions imposed on task priority assignment 2.5 Documentation The documentation for the STxP70 Toolset includes: STxP70 compiler user manual ( ) STxP70-3 assembler user manual ( ) STxP70-4 assembler user manual ( ) STxP70 professional toolset user manual ( ) STxP70 utilities reference manual ( ) Various man pages, application notes and other documents On-line help for STWorkbench 2.6 Example files The installation delivers the following examples as gzipped tar files, ready to be unzipped and imported into an STWorkbench workspace: Dhrystone example: the Dhrystone 2.1 benchmark The installation also provides the following examples as gzipped tar files ready to be unzipped and used in a command-line environment: libmch example libsys example rlib example (using relocatable libraries) FreeRTOS example MTT example ROM patch example Rev 4 7/10
