3 Web Publishing Standards All departmental/unit Web pages are to adhere to the UT Tyler Web standards. Content owners and site owners at UT Tyler are responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of their information on all unit websites. The UT Tyler Web team has overall responsibility of the university website and home page content. Review: uttyler.edu/web/standards

4 Web Publishing Standards UT Tyler is required to comply with the W3C, Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508. Review: uttyler.edu/web/accessibility

5 Branding The official logos and the name of The University of Texas at Tyler are trademarked. Each use must be approved to ensure compliance with UT System and university policies. They are referred to as the registered marks. Learn more: uttyler.edu/logo

8 University Style When Referring to UT Tyler as the university, do not capitalize university. Correct: The university is open for classes. Incorrect: The University is open for classes.

13 What is Responsive? Responsive Web design simply means a website has been constructed to look good on any device (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone). Some elements used in responsive design allow your site to resize, hide content, shrink, enlarge or move the content to make it look good on any screen.

14 Key Features Content focused What is Responsive? Users are after relevant content, not fancy pictures SEO Friendly Google has confirmed responsive design sites improve search rankings Cross platform Users can access content from all platforms Cost effective No need to manage multiple sites. Future proof Website stays relevant

15 1. Navigate to your webpage you wish to update. Logging In 2. Click the copyright sign. Log In to Follow Along

16 Logging In 3. Login with your user id and password you use to login to your computer each day. Your OU Campus user name is your address and your password is the one you use each day for your computer. If you forget your password, please go to the IT password reset page. Don t forget to log out! Log In to Follow Along

19 Editing Content You are now taken into the Just Edit Editor. The JustEdit toolbar has everything needed to edit content within the UT Tyler Templates.

23 Adding Links When linking within the UT Tyler website, ALWAYS link to a dependency tag. 1. Highlight the text you wish to make a hyperlink.

27 Using spellcheck Proofread and test pages BEFORE you publish/send for review. Use the built-in Spellcheck within your editor. It is the responsibility of all OU Campus users to make sure all links are working, grammar is correct and spelling is accurate.

28 Updating Headings The Page Heading and Subheading on the page is editable in Page Parameters. Header and subheader is required on each page. The content in these headers should match the content in the body.

31 Site Architecture and Naming Do not delete pages or directories without working with the web team. Moving content could break links, negatively effect search engines, and cause issues with content on the UT Tyler Web server and bookmarks. The Web team will work with you to develop a plan for your change.

33 Site Architecture and Naming Naming PHP files, documents and images Use lowercase lettering Hyphens should be used to separate words. No spaces, capitals or underscores. Correct: Incorrect: Degr.php It is NOT necessary to repeat a word when naming files or directories. 34 Writing for the Web Website visitors read Web content differently than printed pieces. Summarize first. Put the main points of your document in the first paragraph so readers scanning your pages will not miss your point. What problem am I solving with the information I am adding to this page?

Readers can pick out information more easily from a list. What problem am I solving with the information I am adding to this page?

Guide the reader by using headings, subheadings, bulleted lists and periodic bold text. What problem am I solving with the information I am adding to this page?

WRITING IN ALL CAPITALS IS NEVER APPROPRIATE. It is best to avoid underlines. Users confuse underlined text with hyperlinks. What problem am I solving with the information I am adding to this page?

43 Link Check Users can check for broken links very easy using the Link Check Gadget. You will see it in Gadgets after you SAVE the page.

44 What is Accessibility? Web Accessibility is about making sure all websites work for the widest possible audience. Visual Disabilities. Mobility Disabilities Hearing Disabilities Cognitive or Mental Disabilities

45 Usability, Accessibility and Testing Pages written properly should display properly on all screen sizes, platforms and orientation. A text equivalent MUST be available for all multimedia. Images, video, audio, etc. Use general language and avoid technical jargon where possible. Build machine-readable text pages including PDF documents. Avoid publishing graphics or images with text content to Web pages.

46 Usability, Accessibility and Testing ALL PDF documents must be accessible. Avoid scanned documents. Tag the document to provide structure and support for bookmarks. Add descriptive text to images. Verify and correct the reading order. Optimize the file size when possible. Redact all personal information. PDF accessible information and tutorials are readily available on the web.

47 Updating PDF s From the UT Tyler Web Standards PDFs must have generic file names and are to be replaced. IMPORTANT: When uploading and updating PDFs to your website, ALWAYS re-name PDFs to the SAME file name given to your PDF files. Do not leave old documents on the web server and upload a new file with a different file name.

48 Updating PDF s If old PDF files are left in your site, or you continue to upload a new version: Students find the WRONG information when PDFs. Links across the web linking to your PD s BREAK when you change your file name. Old PDF files take up extra storage space on the server. EXAMPLE: Correct: committee.pdf incorrect: committee revised 2012.pdf File names should not have spaces in the name.

49 Updating PDF s Replace WORD documents with PDF documents and correct any links. This will help all documents show up on all systems.

50 Reviewing Analytics Reviewing Page Analytics will help: Streamline content not needed. Boost pages that are needed. It is important to review and compare year to year.
