1 How to Setup & Use the Direct Traffic Features in CPV Lab
2 Tracking Direct Traffic (Organic, Links, etc.) Direct Traffic are visitors that arrive at your landing pages without going through the campaign url. For example by a search engine result, press release link, forum post, etc. Or directly typing in the landing page url. These types of visitors that don t go through the campaign url won t have the tracking cookie set and the redirects to next level LPs or offer pages won t work. This is intentional and CPV Lab was designed for this to help prevent prying eyes (usually other marketers and competing affiliates) from finding your landing pages and going through your entire campaign. However, this is very useful for paid traffic but if you have organic traffic hitting your landing page/s the same applies to them as well. So, to allow organic visitors through your landing pages and offers In version 2.11, we introduced the ability to handle direct traffic in campaigns. Direct traffic appears in the Stats with the referrer shown in the Target column. To Enable the Direct Traffic feature within a Campaign, you only need to add a piece of code to all the of the Web Pages you want to support. This is optional and only used if you want to allow direct traffic to go through the campaign. After Setting Up a Campaign, you ll see in the code section at the bottom of the Add/Edit Campaign Page In the above code ccc should be replaced with the CampaignID and xxx should be replaced with the Landing Page ID defined for each LP in your campaign.
3 Use the PHP version only on pages saved as.php If you have.htm or.html pages, use the Javascript Version of the code. Only one version needs to be used! When the Step 2b code is used (in addition to adding Step 2 code in LPs), CPV Lab will track both the traffic that comes through the Campaign URL and direct traffic (from search engines results or direct links to the LPs). This piece of code checks if the tracking cookie exists in the users browser and if it doesn t (direct traffic), it creates a tracking cookie from the landing page. Then Stats and Conversions from direct traffic will be registered and displayed in Stats. For Example You have 2 pages ranking in Google and receiving Organic Traffic. ( for the keyword Career Workshop ( for the keyword Career Training You would then simply setup these landing pages in your Campaign and Assign a unique ID to each page. ID 2 = ID 3 = Then the code placed on these pages would be unique to that specific landing page so you could see what page was performing. Since these are.htm pages in the example above, we ll use the Javascript Version of the Direct Traffic Code. Let s say the Campaign ID is 192. Your Javascript Code would be setup on each page as ID 2 = <script type="text/javascript">checkdirect(192,2)</script> ID 3 = <script type="text/javascript">checkdirect(192,3)</script> Then you ll have your base.php links to either other landing pages you are tracking or linking them directly to offers.
4 In other words let s say you have the following outbound links on this page Direct Link to Offer 1: LP for Presell Offer 2: Direct Link to Offer 2: So, if a visitor comes from a search on Google in this example, and lands on CPV Lab will assign the tracking cookie. Then if that visitor clicks a banner or link to the Offers or to the Presell page and then to the offer. All Metrics will be recorded as usual except with Direct Traffic, the referrer is shown in the Target column within the Stats.
5 Site Wide Direct Traffic Examples Let s say you have a multi-page website or wordpress blog Instead of going through and adding all these pages to your campaign with a unique Landing page ID for each you can simply setup just the home page, and then place the same direct traffic code snippet on every page or if using WordPress, just add the code to your Template so it will appear on all pages. You can add just the home page, and in this example we ll say it s Campaign 384 and the Home Page is setup with ID 6 within the Campaign Setup Page. So the code would be one of the following depending on what version you need to use Use the PHP version on.php pages and the Javascript version on.htm or.html pages. Remember, you only need to use one version of the code, NOT both on the same page! In this example, we would then add 1 of the code snippets below to all of our pages, where we want the Direct Traffic feature to function: PHP version: <img src=" echo(base64_encode($_server['http_referer']))?>" /> Javascript version: <script type="text/javascript">checkdirect(384,6)</script> You ll notice in Red above, the Campaign ID and Landing Page ID in the Code. Now, simply place one of these code versions on all pages where you want the direct traffic feature to function.
6 In this example below, we re using a Landing Page Sequence Campaign but any Campaign Type can be used with the Direct Traffic feature. As show below, in pages in the Gray outline are your pages with organic traffic and search engine rankings. These can be regular web pages or a WordPress Blog. Home Page setup within CPV Lab Campaign. Then Add the Same Direct Traffic Code to every web page or if using WordPress, Add the Code to your Template.
7 In the Example Below, we have a very similar setup but tracking visitors across 3 different types of Actions: 1. Opt-Ins 2. Multiple Direct Links to Different Offer Options 3. Multiple Links to Landing Pages clicking through to Offer Options
8 Testing Your Direct Traffic Code Setup Please review this carefully, if not followed correctly you will encounter a problem when testing this feature. It s not a bug or an issue. Continue reading to understand the tracking cookie and how it works. Some users may test a new campaign like this: 1. Create the campaign in CPV Lab 2. Test using the Test link to see that everything works well this means the tracking cookie is created in their browser 3. Test the new feature with Direct Traffic by going directly to the landing page url in their browser they will get to the landing page but they have the tracking cookie (from the Test link), so it s not Direct Traffic. If you test this feature as mentioned above, you will not see new clicks registered in this case, because your browser already have the cookie present from clicking the Test Link. Clear the cookies in your browser before going directly to your landing page when trying to simulate Direct Traffic. You also have the ability to remove cookies from your browser by accessing a page in your CPV Lab installation. This page ( from CPV Lab) clears the tracking cookie from your browser. Access this page before going to the landing page to simulate Direct Traffic in your tests. This is required only in users tests of the campaign, real Direct Traffic works without this page because this traffic doesn t have the tracking cookie. 1. First access 2. Then navigate directly to the landing page you want to test.
9 See How the Referrer is Registered in the Stats If you want to see how the referrer is registered as the target, then use another page that will link to the resetcookie.php page and specify the landing page URL to redirect to. Download the Referrer Test Page: Direct_Traffic_Referrer_Test_Page.zip Open in your HTML Editor and Edit the 2 Lines in this file as shown below and resave and referrer_test.php Remember, this is just for your own testing of the direct traffic feature, in a real environment traffic won t access the resetcookie.php page first. Direct traffic will come from search engines, press releases, videos, comments and other links on the net.
