Wix Using Pages Properly and Effectively Right when you begin using Wix, you are first handed a variety of templets to choose form. What you ll notice about every single templet is that they all have a menu bar with varying titles. But where do these titles come from? menu menu menu menu
Your pages! The menu titles are the same as each of your page titles. To find the pages listed on each templet, go to the top of your page where it says Pages and select the drop down. Your pages allow you to have different content on several pages or just one. It s essentially your navigation bar for editing your website and for your viewers as it is also your menu bar. This is why they re so important! In order to have easy navigation of your website, you need clear and effective Page names. To change your page names, got your Pages and select the circle on the right with three black dots.
Once you ve selected the circle, a drop down will appear with several options. Select Rename to change page names, remember the same name will appear on your Menu bar, so make sure it s clear to both you and the viewer. Click here But what if you want to move your pages around in different orders? This part is actually very simple. Just click and drag the rectangle with the page you want to move. Manually drag the page above or below other pages to change their order. Placement change will look like this
It s also important to note that you can add or delete Pages as well. To add new Pages, select the + Add Page at the bottom of the drop down. To delete a page, select the three doted circled on whichever page you d like to delete. Then click Delete. Click to add Pages Click here to delete Contact page But what if you have all of the pages you want and they re all properly named and now you want to create subpages for your portfolio samples? This time though, you will want to select the three doted circle for the page you want to be the subhead. So here, I want my portfolio to be its own page, but I want my writing to be a subpage of my portfolio. This way the writings page won t show up in my menu bar. Click the drop down and select, subpage.
Your page will now appear like this: If you notice in your Menu bar, the Writings page is now hidden but can only be found from the portfolio page or from buttons or links that send you to that page. But what if I want to keep a page as a main page, not a subpage, but I still don t want it to be seen on my menu bar? Again, select the three doted circle on the page you don t want to be seen on your menu bar. Select Hide to hide the page from your menu screen.
It will then appear like this: Now, the menu bar is extremely important for easy navigation of your website. However, if you prefer some pages to not have a menu bar, you can always hide your menu bar from your page. To do this, select any page you wish to hide the menu bar. For our purposes, we will use our primary home page. This is the page with the small image of a house next to it, and click the circle with the three dots. Then select Page Info to see more information about your homepage, this includes advanced options about the layout of your page. After this, another menu will appear. On page info, you can change the name of the page or hide it from the menu like we did earlier. It also provides information about the page.
But we aren t using this page, to hide the menu bar completely from the page, click on Layouts. Every page is usually in standard format. This means it includes a header and footer, and whatever is put in the head or footer appears on every page with a standard format. The menu bar is typically located in the header. You can keep this feature on the other pages and turn it off for certain pages if you wish to hide it. Click here to hide header and footer So the page will begin looking like this with a header and footer:
And this is what a page looks like without a header and footer: If you do decide to hide your navigation bar, make sure you have buttons, links, or other means of ushering your viewer to the next page. It is vital that your navigation is easy to access and is clearly understandable. So always make your Page titles clear and concise and visible. It s often suggested to have your navigation bar at the top of the page in a horizontal line, so the viewer does not have to search for your work. However, you can also make drop down menus using subpages, which are still easy to find. If I want to make a drop down menu, you need to first select a drop down style menu from the Add button under the Menu section, select a vertical menu.
Once you ve selected a vertical menu. You will see all of your menu tabs listed. But all of your tabs will not fit into your menu like this. So instead, a drop down will work perfectly and to do this, we use subpages! So go back to your pages and using our knowledge of subpages we learned earlier, make every page a subpage EXCEPT for the Home page. Your pages should appear like this: This will make your vertical menu look like this on your page:
Now that your menu is small enough, you can put the menu bar in your header. And if you hover over it in Preview mode, your other pages will come up in a drop down menu. Orange box means its in header But maybe you don t want the menu bar to say Home, instead we can change your menu to just say Menu and still have a drop down option for your home page. To do this, go back to pages and select Add Page. Then, select Menu Header. Click here Like adding another page, a Menu Header page will appear.
Like any other page, Menu Header will show up on your Menu bar, so you may want to change it to just Menu. Then just like you did to make subpages for the Home page, make everything a subpage to the Menu header you just added. This way, when you Preview your menu bar, it will drop down with all of your pages.
You have now successfully created a drop down vertical menu. You can always keep horizontal menus as well. It s just important that you have a menu bar or some way of ushering the viewer to the next page. Essentially, your Pages are essential in guiding the reader where to go. Use these tips to create a great, navigable site!
