Click cell C and complete entry: press enter, click another cell or click me Colors in formulas show cells used ( C and cell C in blue) 1 Review Copying Formulas Prepare a table of y = x + for x = 0 to 10 in steps of x = 0.5 Enter headers, initial x value, and initial equation for y at x = 0 Enter increment equation for x (A) Select equation for x = 0 (B). Click on Fill Handle (small square in lower right corner) and drag down one cell to get new formula. Is this the correct formula? Select cells A:B and drag fill handle down to complete table. (See next page.) 2 Column A: One Decimal Place In/Decreasing Decimal Places Can use arrow icons in Number group to increase or decrease number of places (next) 7 Result: Increase maximum number of decimal places by one and give all other data the same number of decimal places 8 Notation Description of commands has two kinds of information Items that must be entered exactly as shown are simply typed Items that vary are shown with a description surrounded by angle braces, <> How would you write the following for today? The date is <month> <day>, <year>. Will need additional information (e.g. <month> is a full name, <year> is four digits, etc.) The date is January 6, Fixed-cell Formulas When copying a formula a reference like =A1 will change as the formula is copied A reference like =$A$1 will not change Can also have mixed references The reference =$A1 will keep column A, but change rows when copied The reference =A$1 will keep row 1, but change columns when copied 10 Two-way Table Compute KE = mv / table m values in B1:E1 and V values in A:A11 Two-way Table Result =B$1*$A^/ What is mv / formula for cell B that can be copied to all other cells? We want the mass from row 1 and velocity from column A for all cells Use <column>$1 for mass and $A<row> for velocity 11 V values in column A and m values in row 1 shown here without formatting You will use custom formats used to combine numerical values with text in exercise 1

3 Functions Excel over 00 worksheet functions With VBA code you can write your own functions to be called from Excel Functions calls from worksheet have the form: =<Function Name>(<Argument List>) E.g.: RAND(), SIN(B10), ATAN(C1, R), Some VBA functions have different names from Excel functions Square root is SQRT in Excel, SQR in VBA 1 Plotting Data Many possible alternatives in creating plots Can be done simply using Suggested Charts with several different ways to alter the chart items Return to initial exercise Seek to plot polynomial (Ax + Bx + C) versus x from data shown at left 1 Using Recommended Charts 1. Minimum temperature; 00; K Maximum temperature; 500; K Temperature steps; ; dimensionless First Assignment Continued Next calculate the engineering gas constant, R = R u /M and T = (T max T min )/N T_Steps Use same format (description; value; units) used for input data for these results Create table with headers Temperature and Density and units in second row Create table of temperatures from T min to T max with corresponding values of = P/RT 19 0 Results of First Task Assignment One Task One =B5 =E+$B$9 =(B6 B5)/B7 =B1/B Density formula in cell F ( = P/RT) is =$B$/($B$10*E) 1 Cell Names Can assign meaningful names to cells Names are used in formulas and show in name box when cell is selected Example below shows change with names Worksheet Using Names Without Names Default cell names are absolute Getting Cell Names Select cells with names adjacent to cells to be named Choose Create from Selection in Defined Names group of Formula tab In resulting dialog box make sure name location is correct and click OK

5 Name Box The name box, to the left of the formula bar, shows the currently selected cell When range names are defined, this box becomes a pulldown menu that shows all the defined names Clicking on a name in this menu takes you to the named cell Range names may be used as names for multiple cells 5 Name Manager Main tool for managing range names Choose Name Manager in Defined Names group of Formula tab Create, delete or edit names in Manager By default names have scope of entire workbook (named range on one worksheet can be used on any worksheet) Name manager allows you to make name scope one worksheet 6 Names to Existing Formulas Click the down arrow next to Define Names and select Apply Names from the resulting submenu Select names in Apply names dialog and click OK Can leave settings for checkboxes at bottom of dialog as set by Excel 7 Quick Access Toolbar 1. Select file tab. When menu at the left appears select Options to get dialog at right. Select Quick Access Toolbar from the left side of the dialog When the Excel Options is selected, the General options are displayed by default; next slide has quick access toolbar options 8 Modify Quick Access Toolbar 1. Select desired commands from box on left and click Add>>. Use arrows to change order of icons in toolbar. Remove icons by <<Remove button 9 5
