T WWW Applications The 's goal is to make browsing the Web from mobile devices a reality. The W3C and mobile industry leaders are working together to improve Web content production and access for mobile users and the greater Web. -Tim Berners-Lee Carlos Martinez Greg Leidy
Why an initiative? No foreseen development of any new technology Development of Guidelines and Best Practices Development of "MobileOK" Trustmark Marketing and Outreach activities Training 2
Who is involved? 19 sponsors Nokia Ericsson HP DoCoMo More 3
Problems For content authors Device diversity Type of application, functionality, and complexity Rich media Navigation 4
Problems (cont.) For network operators Affordability to customers Provide access to content quickly Customers demand higher quality because of price High content at a low bandwith 5
Problems (cont.) For web-users Price Relevance of search results 6
Hardware Screen size and resolution Doesn t support certain types of applications and programming languages Bandwidth 7
Working groups Best Practices Device Description Test Suites 8
Best Practices The best practices workgroup was created to decide the best way for mobile users to experience the web. They have created guidelines by which content authors can create good effective mobile web pages. Objectives The Mobile Web Best Practices Basic Guidelines The MobileOK Basic document 9
Device Description The goal of the device description working group is to provide a way for device descriptions to be made available for web adaptation technology. Objectives The Device Description Repository which will be used to provide device information to content/service providers. 10
Test Suites To develop a foundation for the mobile web by creating test suites for browsers. Objectives a survey of conformance test suites authoring practices for the Mobile Web 11
MobileOK Trust The MobileOK Basic document which defines machine tests based on the Best Practices to help identify Web content developed with mobile devices in mind; these tests fits in the larger mobileok marks scheme 12
Possibilities of Bridge the digital divide Allow access to internet for people who do not have access to a computer 13
Current Status of the MWI The Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group: The group is working on two main documents, Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0, W3C mobileok Scheme 1.0 as well as W3C mobileok Basic Tests 1.0 The Best Practices document has reached Proposed Recommendation, and mobileok Basic Tests is in Last Call. The MWI Device Description Working Group: The group has recently been rechartered and its work items include developing an API for accessing information in a Device Description Repository. The MWI Test Suites Working Group has been newly created recently. The group is chartered to help create a strong foundation for the mobile Web through the development of a set of test suites targeted at Web Client software. The test suites should be more extensive than those typically produced by W3C Working Groups as exit criterion from Candidate Recommendation, and could be suitable for checking conformance of user agents to specifications in the mobile Web space. 14
Available Tools A generic test harness to wrap existing test suites: it allows to navigate among test cases, while recording the results (pass or fail) for each test case. A mobile-friendly version for the DOM Level 1 test suite; the existing DOM Test Suites rely on frames and heavy use of javascript, that can't easily be run on mobile devices. Mobile Web Best Practices Basic Guidelines document MobileOK Basic document W3C Mobile Web Best Practices checker 15
