2 2 Times News Tracker Overview Activate your Times News Tracker service now by setting up customized alerts on the topics that are most essential to your work and life. You can now create as many as 10 customized alerts on any subject you wish. You can edit, delete and create alerts as often as you like. If you ve used Times News Tracker before, you can set up a new alert now or continue reading to learn more about how to put the enhanced Times New Tracker to work for you. previous next

3 3 Three Types of News Tracker Alerts Times Topic Alerts This type of alert is based on a pre-defined list of subject terms, personal names, organization names and geographic locations compiled and maintained by nytimes.com editors. With Times Topic Alerts, only articles primarily about your topic will be matched, not articles that might mention your topic in passing. So, if you are interested in receiving articles about specific subjects, people, organizations, or places, this is the kind of alert you will want to create. Set up a Times Topic Alert now. Keyword Alerts This type of alert is based on your own criteria, allowing you to specify the words and phrases that articles must contain. You can limit your keywords to specific fields, such as headline or byline, and you can limit your alert to capture articles that appear only in specific sections of nytimes.com. If you are interested in a very specific subject matter or would like to track news by a particular columnist or reporter, you will want to use a Keyword Alert. Remember, with Keyword Alerts, every article that includes the keywords you have specified will be matched, even those that might mention them in passing. Set up a Keyword Alert now. Ticker Symbol Alerts If you re interested in tracking publicly traded companies as covered in our Business and Technology sections you can create an alert based on stock ticker symbols. You can add up to 5 stock symbols per alert specifying that articles need to either match all the symbols or any single company symbol. Set up a Ticker Alert now. previous next

4 4 You can set up all three types of alerts from the News Tracker management page in Member Center. To get there, click on the Member Center link in the upper right corner of any nytimes.com page and then click on the tab for Times News Tracker. (continued on next page) previous next

5 5 TIMES TOPICS ALE RTS In addition to creating alerts from the Times News Tracker area in Member Center, you will find opportunities to set up alerts throughout the site. On nearly every article page of nytimes.com, you will see a Times News Tracker module listing a number of topics covered in that article. To the right of each topic you will find a Create button. If you would like to set up an alert for one of the topics listed a Times Topic Alert simply click the Create button. You will be taken to the Times News Tracker area of Member Center where all it takes to set up an alert are a few simple steps: 1. Refine your alert criteria This is an optional step to help you better define the criteria for your alert. (continued on next page) previous next

Set alert delivery options News Tracker alerts can be sent to you immediately when an article matching your topic is published or we can send you a daily or weekly digest containing links to all matching articles over the chosen period of time. 3. 7 7 Getting Started TIMES TOPICS ALERTS 4. Preview & Save Upon saving this information, you will be shown a list of recent articles that matched your criteria. This preview is designed to give you an idea of the kind of articles you would receive with this alert. If the articles don t quite meet your needs, simply go back and refine your alert criteria to more accurately pinpoint the topic of interest. When you are satisfied with your alert criteria, simply click the save button and we will begin delivering alerts to you with matching articles. Once you begin receiving alerts, if you ever decide that you would like to make changes, simply return to the Times News Tracker area of Member Center where you can edit, suspend delivery or delete any of your News Tracker alerts as often as you would like. previous next

8 8 KEYWORD ALERTS If the topics listed in the Times News Tracker module on the article page do not meet your needs, you may choose to set up a Keyword Alert from scratch using your own keywords to define the alert criteria. Simply click on the Create Your Own link at the bottom of the Times News Tracker module. Choose the Keyword Alert among the options presented. (continued on next page) previous next

9 9 KEYWORD ALERTS It s then just four simple steps to set up your custom Keyword Alert. First, you need to define your alert by telling us the specific words and /or phrases that you want to track within articles. You can do this by giving us words that must appear in matched articles. Steps Two, Three and Four for setting up a Keyword Alert are the same as they are for Times Topics Alerts. You need to set your delivery schedule, keeping in mind that alerts can be sent as they are matched on the site or in a daily or weekly digest. You need to give your alert a name that best reflects the subject you are tracking. This name is what will appear in the subject line of the . Finally, you need to preview and save your alert criteria previous next

12 12 TICKER SYMBOL ALE RTS With Ticker Alerts you can enter and track up to five ticker symbols in one alert, and decide if the alert should match articles containing all five tickers or match against articles containing any one of the five ticker symbols. (continued on next page) previous next

13 13 TICKER SYMBOL ALE RTS You can also narrow your criteria further by indicating words and phrases that must or must not appear in the article in addition to the ticker symbol. Just as with Times Topic Alerts and Keyword Alerts, you complete the set-up for Ticker Alerts by setting the delivery schedule and naming the alert. Remember, all of your Times News Tracker alerts may be edited, refined turned on or off at any time simply by visiting the News Tracker management page in Member Center. previous next

14 14 Personal Archive Feature Times News Tracker now includes your own personal 90-day archive for all articles matching your Times News Tracker alerts. Accessing these articles is simple. All of your active alerts are listed on the Times News Tracker management page in Member Center. Simply click on a Personal Archive button to reveal a list of articles from the past 90-days matching that alert criteria and click on the headline to read the article. previous next

15 15 Breaking News Alerts Breaking News Alerts are now exclusive to Times News Tracker subscribers. NYTimes.com editors will send you Breaking News Alerts when, in their judgement, significant news has occurred that is essential for you to make bettter business decisions and be more generally well informed throughout the day. See a sample. With Breaking News Alerts, there is nothing to set up. As a Times News Tracker subscriber you are automatically configured to receive these alerts. If at any time during your membership you would like to stop receiving Breaking News Alerts, simply visit the Times News Tracker management page in Member Center and change the status to off next to the line for Breaking News Alerts. If you choose to resume service, you need only return to the Times News Tracker Management page and change the status back to On. previous next
