2 The Teachers College Record is one of the leading scholarly publications in the field of Education. The work published in TCR and TCRecord.org is peer-reviewed and has been continuously published since 1900 by Teachers College, Columbia University. In revamping the TCRecord.org website we set out to accomplish three primary criteria. Improve the user experience, increase security and provide a model for other academic publications to emulate. TCRecord.org aims to be known for its content, delivery and design. Below is a detailed description of the feature set and technical requirements for the new TCRecord.org PLATFORM Publishing System: Bricolage User Management System: see Key Questions, 1-2 E Commerce: see Key Questions, 1 CORE MODEL We would like to link Bricolage, our publishing engine with both an e-commerce solution and a user management system. Bricolage will push the necessary content to a separate server that will display content to the user. Access to TCRecord.org content beyond the homepage is granted two fold: 1. An Individual User a. Individual users are required to be subscribers to access any content beyond the homepage that is beyond the abstract. 2. The Institutional User (Library) a. The institutional user must be a subscriber (verified via IP address) and can access only a limited amount of content through a variant of the homepage. We plan to use the e-commerce solution as the method to register Individual Users for subscriptions. Institutional Users should be granted access with an IP range. Once the

3 subscription process has completed, all pertinent information about the user is sent to a homegrown user management system. This user management system will then give access to the appropriate TCRecord content and tools based on the user s subscription level. KEY QUESTIONS 1. Which e-commerce solution is best for talking to bricolage and providing user management features? 2. If an e-commerce solution can not provide the necessary user management system, how can we get the user information from the e-commerce solution to create our own user-management system? 3. Does bricolage recognize content that is already in a database prior to its installation. That is, if content is placed in a database and bricolage is connected to that database after the fact does bricolage import that content into its system? 4. If answer to above question is no then how do we import content into bricolage? Is there a standard format by which you can import a large set of data that bricolage recognizes? 5. We plan to port some of our other journals over to bricolage. The requirements of the other journals are exactly the same as TCRecord (in most cases less features). Is it better to include these journals within the same installation of bricolage and on the bricolage end indicate their heritage (TCRecord, NSSE, Educational Yearbook etc) or is it better to have separate installations of bricolage to deal with each of these journals? (the design of each journal will be different however we would like to pull content from one into the other) 6. If the installation is separate, would you recommend developing both installations at the same time or do one (TCRecord) and then the other? 7. We have to port over our current content into the new database. Contained within the RFP package is our current schema from a MSSQL database. What is the cost of porting this content over to our new MYSQL database? 8. We are currently using the WIND system to capture UNI from current TC students to grant them access to all TCRecord content. This has caused the following problem: we are unable to automatically determine whether they have graduated. Moving forward we would like to capture the information from WIND and save it to our own user management system to more accurately track access to students who have graduated. That is, if a user clicks on an article on the homepage, the resulting Individual Article - Logged In page displays all content and article tools. However, only users who have a subscription can comment on the article. b. Individual Article c. Logged in: If user is logged in, he/she has access to all content, article tools and the ability to comment. Subscription and get newsletter content is hidden. d. Not Logged in: If a user is not logged in, he/she can view the abstract. Purchase Article and Citation tools are active, while all other article tools are shown in inactive state with a message alerting user that he/she must log in/subscribe to access all tools. e. Comments: A list of the current comments are shown but user must log in or subscribe to be able to post a comment. 2. Individual User (Current TC Student) a. Current TC Students have free access to all content across entire site. b. Permission is currently granted using the WIND client guide ( acis/rad/authmethods/wind/index.html) Moving forward we would like to take the information gathered from WIND and keep it in our database so as to check if a student has graduated and hence deny him/her access to TCRecord. 3. Institutional User (Library): a. Homepage: Articles and book reviews are restricted to the past 10 years. b. Individual Article/Book Review: Ability to view article/book review is restricted to subscribers. Subscription is determined by verification of IP address. c. Once a year is selected, a list of months (12) is displayed (AJAX). A user selects a month from the list and the page refreshes to show Articles by Date page. 5. Volume a. Select Volume: User selects a volume. Once a volume is selected, a list of Numbers is displayed (AJAX). A user selects a Number and the page refreshes to show Articles by Volume page. 1.
