Nikolay Lobachevsky Academic Library Instructions for Readers
General information Nikolay Lobachevsky Academic Library offers access to a vast collection of print and electronic publications in English and other European languages. Print publications. In the reading hall number 1 (35 Kremlevskaya str., 4th floor), you can access more than 2500 publications covering all fields of knowledge, primarily philosophy, sociology, culture, jurisprudence, economics, and other areas of social and humanitarian sciences. Electronic resources. You can find electronic resources (e-resources) from the world s leading scientific publishers and search aggregators. These resources are available as collections of journals and books, namely: Journal collections on natural sciences: American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), Institute of Physics (IОP), Royal Society of Chemistry, as well as the multidisciplinary e-collections of Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Springer Nature, Elsevier, and others. Book collections: Ebook Central, Springer books, Cambridge University Press (Mathematics books), ORF econtent library. Access to international scientific citation databases (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science, Inspec (EBSCO), MathSciNet, and Zentralblatt MATH) is also possible as part of the Library's subscription. Who can access KFU s e-resources? Current students and employees of Kazan Federal University can access e resources for academic purposes only. Where can KFU's e-resources be accessed from? Resources covered by the Library s subscription are freely available from any computer connected to KFU network. To access the above-mentioned resources from a computer that is not connected to KFU network (remote access), you should follow the instructions given below to set up your browser or a VPN service. 2
How do I find out which e-resources KFU has access to? Start your search on the Library web page at Click on Network Resources ( on the right and then Foreign network resources ( for a list of all foreign e-resources that KFU has access to. 3
You can also use the Journals and Books (A-Z) search service at Journals and Books (A-Z) You can search for resources available through KFU s subscription as well as open-access resources using the buttons All, Only journals, and Only books. You can search for books and journals by title, words in the title, or ISSN and ISBN identifiers. The journals and books can be ordered alphabetically. By selecting one of the 14 subject areas given on the page, you can refine your search. These 14 subject areas are divided into smaller categories. The number in parentheses given for each category is the number of journals found under this category. The result of both the title search and the alphabetic search is a list of journals and books with links to the corresponding web pages. 4
Searching for information for research or educational purpose What is Summon? Summon is a fast library search engine that helps you discover relevant, reliable information from scholarly journals, books and more in the collections of Kazan Federal University Library. Features of Summon Single search box The Summon single search box allows searching for information for research or educational purpose among the collections included in the Library's subscription (Elsevier, Springer, Cambridge University Press, and others). Search across the central unified index The unified search index includes pre-harvested content from the publisher's commercial databases, openaccess resources, own library catalog and local collections. There are more than 95 content types, 9000 publishers and 1 billion records. Relevant result Tthe relevance ranking algorithms and architecture of the Summon service ensure that the best matches to a user's query are returned at or near the top of results lists. The Summon service relevance ranking consists of scoring two sets of information about an item according to an algorithm. These two scores are called Dynamic Rank and Static Rank, and they work jointly to deliver the best results for a user's query. Search results include links to: Kazan Federal University Library Catalog records; online journals; magazine and newspaper articles; database citations; institutional repositories; conference proceedings; reports; dissertations. If you like to know more about resources activated in Summon, check List of information resources in Summon. FU pdf 5
Start your search at or follow the link given on the Library's homepage. Summon Choose the interface language in the menu on the right. Basic search equals a query over all fields, i.e. all possible search fields (author, title, year, etc.) are searched for entered keywords. As you type your query in the search box, a drop-down list automatically appears containing similar search results. Use Boolean operators to combine keywords, as well as wildcard characters and truncation. Boolean operators: AND narrows search results;or expands search results; NOT excludes unwanted records. Wildcard characters and truncation: Use the * symbol to replace zero or more characters in the middle or at the end of a word, e.g. col*r finds color and colour as well as columnar. The question mark in the middle of a search term retrieves records containing words with any character in that position, e.g. wom?n finds woman and women. To find exact phrases use quotation marks, e.g. remote sensing. 6
Advanced search If you are searching for a known item, you might want to try the Advanced Search option. Enter search terms in the Advanced Search form to create a more specific query using fielded search options and Boolean operators. It is possible to add results beyond the library collection and search among more than 1 billion records. You can jump to the full text by clicking on either the document title or the Full Text Online link. Refine using facets and filters to narrow or expand results. Options include discipline, date, content type, subject, and more. There is also a facet to refine your search by available full text, articles from scholarly journals, exclude newspaper articles. Facets may change and get more granular as you navigate your search results. 7
Perhaps you've found some articles you'd like to save. Choose the items in the results list and select the Save this item icon to the right of each result. The item's folder icon should change color when you select it. Altmetrics go beyond the traditional citation metrics to take into consideration how scholarly output such as journal articles and research datasets are being cited and shared by others on the Web in order to measure influence. They are meant to complement traditional metrics, not replace them. If available, search results will show an Altmetric score. 8
