Creating a Race e-row allows you to hold races among several Ergometers. These must be equipped with the PM2+ performance monitor. See the owner s manual for connecting the Ergometers for racing. To create a race, use the New Race command in the File menu. The Modify Race dialog box will be displayed so that you can define the race. Modify Race Dialog Box The Modify Race dialog box is used to create and edit races. In this dialog box, you will set the race parameters and supply the teams and or rowers names. At the bottom of the window is a scrollbar that lets you edit beyond the first 16 rowers (or teams). Depending on whether you are creating a singles race or a team race, the name fields will be for rowers or teams. For singles races the fields will contain the names of the rowers. For team races they will contain the team names. For team races, individual rower s names can be entered for each team by clicking on the Rowers button next to the team s name. Race Name: This is the name of the race. It will be displayed in the program title bar and it is used as a default name for the race file where this data is stored. It is also used as the name for the result files. However, if you change the race file name, the result files will be named using that filename. e-row creates result files at the end of a race or workout. This dialog box forces you to save the race setting in a file when closing the dialog box. This is necessary because e-row needs to know what to name the result files. The result files will have exactly the same name as the race file except for the extension. The result files are also stored in the Results directory. Distance: Selecting this button creates a distance race. The race distance is entered in the edit box next to this field. Time: Selecting this button creates a time race. The duration is entered in the edit box next to this field. Grouping: Choose between Singles, Doubles, Fours or Eights. Save Stroke Data: Checking this button causes e-row to save stroke data at the end of a race or workout. The file is stored in the Results directory. See Preferences for more explanation of the results Directory. Splits: Click this button to display the Splits dialog box. This allows you to set the split interval. Lanes/Teams: At the bottom of the dialog box are the edit fields for entering the names of rower or teams depending on your choice of Grouping. Preferences Dialog Box This dialog box allows you to select options and set certain parameters that affect the general operation of e-row. Maximized: This option causes e-row to run maximized by default when it is launched. Normal: This option causes e-row to run in a normal window by default when it is launched. This is a typical sizeable window. Races: If you wish to save races someplace other than the default directory, you can enter the path here. The default directory is a subdirectory of the main application directory called Races. Workouts: If you wish to save workouts someplace other than the default directory, you can enter the path here. The default directory is a subdirectory of the main application directory called Workouts. Results: If you wish to save workout and race results someplace other than the default directory, you can enter the path here. The default directory is a subdirectory of the main application directory called Results. Page 1
Preferences Dialog Box continued Web Browser: This is a full pathname of the Web browser on your computer. e-row can launch the browser so that is it more convenient to run the Race Administration Web Page. It is also used to display help files. Click the Browse button to browse for the web browser program. Show Hints: If checked, hints will be displayed where available. Disable error messages: If checked, disables the display of communication errors. Enable Countdown: If checked, races and workouts start with a 5 second countdown. If not checked, the countdown is skipped. Enable Workout Views: If checked, workout views are available, otherwise they are disabled. Generate comma delimited reports: If checked report files are comma delimited. Otherwise they are tab delimited. Generate tab delimited reports: If checked report files are tab delimited. Otherwise they are comma delimited. Splits Dialog Box Use the dialog box to set the splits interval. For a distance race or workout, set the Distance field. For a time race or workout set the Time field. For workouts with both time and distance sets, set both the Distance and Time fields. If you set this value greater than the duration of the race, e-row will automatically set the splits interval to match the full duration of the race. Creating a Workout e-row allows you to do interval workouts with one or more Ergometers. These must be equipped with the PM2+ performance monitor. See the owner s manual for connecting the Ergometers for workouts. To create a workout, use the New Workout command in the File menu. The Modify Workout dialog box will be displayed so that you can define the workout. Modify Workout Dialog Box The Modify Workout dialog box is used to create and edit workouts. In this dialog box, you will set the workout parameters and supply the rowers names. The main part of this dialog box is a table for entering a programmed workout. Each row in the table is called a set. Each set can be repeated any number of times. Each set can be a distance or time workout. Click on the Duration field to display a dropdown selection box and pick Meters or Time. You can also just type M or T. Enter the actual duration in the next field. In the Target field define the target pace for the workout. Click in the left column of the Target to select a target unit. You can choose from /500 M (pace), Cals/Hr, Watts, or HR (heart rate). It the next field, enter the value for the target pace. In the Rest column enter the duration of the rest period to follow the workout. At least a 10-second rest period is required. The bottom of the window displays a summary of the workout. Times and distance may be estimated since workout time will be dependent on the target pace. The button on the left lets you enter more information related to the workout. Click the Rowers button to enter the rowers names. Click the Setup button to set the workout name and select the Save Stroke Data option. Click the Splits button to set the split intervals. See Splits Dialog Box. Page 2
Just Row Just Row is the simplest means of using e-row. It allows you to just hop on your indoor rower and begin a workout. You have the choice of using any of the views during your workout. This mode does not provide a target pace. You work at whatever pace you like. Unlike the races and workouts which are countdown modes, Just Row works in count-up mode. This means you just row until you wish to stop. There are no reports created at the end of a Just Row workout. You do not need to set anything on the PM2+. e-row will place the PM2+ into count-up mode for you. Note: This feature is only available when one PM2+ is connected to the computer. Internet Racing Internet Racing provides you with the ability to race against people all around the world. To use this feature simply requires a connection to the Internet. The first step will be to register. This is done in e-row using the Internet/Registration/Register command. To hold a race over the Internet, you just use the /Internet/Race Wizard... command and create a race. The designated race administrator will organize and create the race. The race administrator can be anyone including yourself, even if you are in the race. That will probably be the case most of the time. Once the race has been created and scheduled, those who wish to participate in the race join the race using the same Race Wizard command. Be sure to list all rowers at your computer at this time. e-row will do the rest at the time of the race. All you do is simply log on and use the Race Wizard command and select a race. The Race Wizard supports two kinds of races, scheduled and unscheduled. If you have arranged to meet someone at a previously agreed upon time, or just met someone in the chat box that you want to race, you should use the unscheduled race selection. This is a simpler method as opposed the scheduled race. When using Internet Racing features, be sure to use the commands in the Internet menu. Do not use the commands in the File menu. Those are only for non- Internet races. Unscheduled (Quick) Races Steps for creating an unscheduled Internet race: 1. Establish a connection to the Internet. 2. Connect to the Race Server (menu command: Internet/Log On) Before you log on for the first time, you must register. Use the Internet/Registration/Register command to register. 3. Create a race using the Internet/Race Wizard command. You will be the owner, or race administrator, for this race. In the first dialog box, select the choice labeled Create a New Race. In the next dialog box, select I want to create an unscheduled race and enter now. (Quick Race). In the next dialog box, enter the name of the race, the duration, and your name as you want it to appear in the race screen. Then click OK. 4. The Registration Status window will be displayed next. This window displays the names of all the rowers that have registered for the race. When everyone has registered. The Home computer will click Proceed to Start. The step signals everyone s computer to prepare to start the race. The Home computer will be rower number one in the list. A series of windows will be displayed when the process is occurring. Once you see the Start Window, wait for the Start button to become enabled and then click Start. This will start the countdown. The Start button will be disabled until everyone s computer is displaying the start window. Steps for entering an existing unscheduled Internet race: 1. Establish a connection to the Internet. 2. Connect to the Race Server (menu command: Internet/Log On) Before you log on for the first time, you must register. Use the Internet/Registration/Register command to register. 3. Using the Race Wizard, select I want to enter an unscheduled race. (Quick Race). 4. Same as above. Before displaying the Start window, you will see a window telling you to click the OK button when you are ready to row. This gives you a chance to get ready to row. When you re ready, click OK and you will see that Start window. Wait for the countdown to begin. Page 3
Scheduled Races Steps for creating a scheduled Internet race: 1. In the next dialog box, select I want to schedule a race and let others register.. In the next dialog box, enter the name of the race, the duration, when it will occur.. Then click OK. 4. The next window allows you to enter the names of the rowers that are connected to your computer. It possible to create a race and not have any rowers at your computer. In that case, you will still be the administrator of the race, but the first person to join the race will be the one to start it. That is, the first computer will be the home computer even though they are not the race administrator. The owner (administrator) of the race has the exclusive right to modify or cancel the race. When you have finished entering rower names, click OK 5. The next window displays a list of the computers that have registered for your race. Assuming you registered yourself, at this point you should only see your computer listed. At this point you click on Run Race Later. Now the race is ready for others to register. Once everyone has registered for a race, it is ready to run. Steps for running an existing scheduled Internet race: 1. Using the Race Wizard, select I want to enter a scheduled race. 2. Select the race from the next window. 3. The next window displays a list of the computers that are registered for the race. Assuming the race is scheduled to take place now, click on Proceed to Checkin. 4. If you are the Home computer, you will see the Check In Status window. This window displays everyone that has checked in for the race. If a particular computer fails to show up, you can click on Continue without Noshows to drop them from the race. Otherwise, when everyone has checked in, the program will automatically proceed with the process of preparing for the race. You will see a Connection Status window. Unless, there is some communication problem, this window should be displayed for a short time then disappear. Before displaying the Start window, you will see a window telling you to click the OK button when you are ready to row. This gives you a chance to get ready to row. When you re ready, click OK and you will see that Start window. If you are the Home computer, you will not see this message. Wait for the countdown to begin. 5. To run the race, everyone checks in and downloads race data from Internet. (menu command: Internet/ Check In) This amounts to selecting the race from a list. e-row will then automatically download the race data and begin negotiating with the server. Once everyone has done this, the Start Window will be displayed. 6. Once everyone is ready, the person at the home computer clicks Start in the Start Window to begin the race. Each computer will display the countdown. 7. Row! From this point on, its just like running a regular, non-internet, race. During the race, each computer will display the same thing. At the end of the race, the results are saved on the race server. You can view them at any time using the Internet/Recall Race Results command. If you happen to become disconnected from the Internet from some reason, you can type Alt+R to reconnect. Of course, if you have lost your Internet connection, you must re-establish your Internet connection first. Of course this is a little difficult to do while you are rowing. If you have an unreliable Internet connection, it may be a good idea to have someone with you to perform the reconnection. This person could also be your coxswain. Planning for an Internet Race After creating a race, you can leave a message on the message board (menu command: Internet/ message Page 4
board) announcing a designated time and date for the race. Its best to use GMT times here to prevent confusion. If you wish to invite a certain person or group of people to join a race, you can use the member directory to get information on other members. This information includes name, city, state, country, address, weight category, best times, and gender. You can categorize the member directory by choosing a category and clicking the search button. Also, you can arrange the members already listed into a certain order by clicking on one of the category buttons above the list. If you are trying to find a certain member, but don t know enough about them to find them, you can use the filter at the bottom ( the filter includes: equals, contains, starts with, and ends with) to narrow down the list. This should help you find the exact member you are looking for. The member directory also allows you to select a member and send him/her an announcing the race. One way to communicate with other members who are already on-line is to chat (menu command: Internet/ Chat). This feature lets you have a private conversation with anyone that is currently logged in to the race server. Chat Dialog Box The Chat dialog is used to converse with the persons at the other computers in an internet race. This eliminates the need to talk on the phone to coordinate the starting of a race. Theoretically, this window should not be needed. However, there probably will be times when you will wish to communicate with the other computers just before the race. It can be helpful in troubleshooting, making announcements, or just chatting. Message: This is where you type in the message you wish to send. Send: Click this to send the message. Dialogue: Displays all messages in the conversation, including your own. The message is prefixed with the name of the location that sent the message. Destination: Use the list to select the computers that you want to send a message to. Select Race Members: Click this button to select all computers which are currently in the Internet race which you a participating in. Clear Selections: This button deselects all computers in the Destination Listbox. Clear: This button removes all messages from the message window. Check-in Status Dialog Box During the check-in phase of starting an Internet race, this dialog box will be displayed. Its purpose is to inform you of which computers have successfully completed the check-in phase. It is helpful in knowing which computers are showing up for the race. If one or more computers fail to show up in a reasonable time frame, you can continue the race without them by clicking on the Continue without No-shows button. If for some reason you wish to restart the check-in, you can click the Cancel button and re-open the race. The window displays a list of the computers in the race. A colored indicator next to the computer name shows whether the computer is checked in or not. The indicator will be red while the computer is not checked in. After the computer has checked in, it will turn green. Dropped computers are represented by a gray indicator. Once all computers have completed the check-in phase, this dialog box will automatically close. It will be followed by the Connecting... dialog box Page 5
Communications Port Dialog Box Use this window to select which communications port you are going to use to communicate with the PM2+ units. If you don t know which serial ports on your computer correspond with COM1-COM4, just connect the PM2+ into any unused serial communication port on your computer and select Auto Detect in this dialog box. You must have the PM2+ connected to your computer before using Auto Detect. Connecting... Dialog Box During the connection phase of starting an Internet race, this dialog box will be displayed. Its purpose is to inform you which locations have successfully completed the connection phase. If a computer fails to connect in a reasonable time frame, you can continue the race without them by clicking on the Continue without No-shows button. The window displays a list of the computers in the race. A colored indicator next to the computer name shows whether the computer finished connecting or not. The indicator will be red while the computer is connecting. After the computer has finished connecting, it will turn green. Once all computers have completed the check in phase, this dialog box will automatically close. A black indicator just means that the computer is not in the race. Hardware Dialog Box This dialog box is used to configure e-row to match the actual topology of your PM2+ layout. If you are using more than one PM2+ you will at least need to use the Assign PM2+ Numbers button. Also if you wish to layout the teams differently than the default layout, you will need to configure your teams here. The most common use for this dialog box is to automatically assign numbers to the PM2 units. The operation also determines how many PM2 units are connected. To assign the numbers, click the Assign PM2+ Numbers button. You will be prompted to enter the number of PM2+ units you have physically connected to this computer. This operation will take a few seconds. Once it s done, it will report if it was successful or not. The number of PM2 units that were detected will be displayed in the Number of PM2+s Communicating field. If this number does not match the number you specified, you will need to determine why. Either the value you entered was wrong, or there is a problem with the connection of the PM2+ units. Once the number of PM2+ units is assigned, the OK button will be enabled. Clicking OK will save the results of the Assign PM2+ Numbers. However, the number you specified must match the number reported by e-row before the OK button will be enabled. Clicking Cancel will close the dialog box without saving the number of PM2+ units you specified however, the PM2+ units themselves will keep the numbering assigned to them. The second purpose of this dialog box is to map PM2+ units to teams. Generally, teams are grouped together. In other words, for a doubles race, for example, the first two PM2 units would be for the first team, the second two would be for the second team and so on. By using the Configure Doubles button you can change the order to anything you like. Internet Setup Dialog Box The main purpose of providing this feature is to allow you configure e-row to work in conjunction with a proxy server. Most people can ignore this feature. However, there are becoming more and more families with local area networks in their home. Some of these families will use a proxy server to allow all of the computers on the network to access the internet via a single connection. If this is your case and you are running e-row from a computer other than the proxy, use will need to configure e-row and your proxy server as described on the next page. Page 6
The items in the dialog box are: Use a Proxy Server: If you are using a proxy server, check this box. Otherwise, leave it unchecked. With this box unchecked, e-row will talk directly to the Concept II servers. Web Server: This is the IP address of the proxy server and the port number which it uses for HTTP proxy. Usually this will be port 80 or Race Server: This is the IP address of the proxy server and the port number which it uses to talk to the race server. The port number will be whatever the network administrator assigns it to. Normally, this would be 9100, but it can be different. If 9100 is in use for a different protocol, the administrator can choose a different port. The proxy server must be configured to map this port number to and port That is the address and port number for the race server. Also, you may need to specify TCP Bridge Proxy in the server. Unfortunately, Concept II will not be able to give assistance with setting up the proxy server. This is up to the administrator of your network. Click in the left column of the Target to select a target Page 7
unit. Race View Options Dialog Box When the Race view is displayed, this dialog lets you set options for the Race View. The buttons in the Right Column group let you choose which value is displayed on the right side of the screen. Show Average Pace: This button selects average pace as the value to be displayed on the right side of the Race View. Show Current Pace: This button selects current pace as the value to be displayed on the right side of the Race View. Show Projected Finish Time/Meters: This button selects project finish time/meters as the value to be displayed on the right side of the Race View. Time is displayed for distance races and distance is displayed for time races. Sort Lanes Every XXX Meters: When this button is checked, the Race View will sort the lanes by current place at an interval specified in the edit box. For example, if you enter 500, it will resort every 500 meters. The Rower (or team) in first place will be in lane 1 and so on. Always display rowers names: This causes the rowers names to appear on the screen throughout the race. When not checked, the names disappear shortly after the race starts. Select PM2+ Dialog Box Use this dialog box to select which erg will be represented by the workout views. This dialog box is not available during a race or workout. It must be used before starting the race or workout. Start Window (for non-home computers in Internet Race) This window is displayed automatically at the beginning of an Internet race. It is used to synchronize the computers so that they can start the race together. It s also used to let the rowers know when to start rowing. When the window appears and you are ready to start racing, click on the Ready button. If for some reason you need extra time, click on Not Ready. When you are finally ready, click the ready button. Your readiness state will be displayed on all computers in the race. If you are holding things up, everyone will know who it is. The home team has the option of dropping locations from the race if they do not become ready in a reasonable amount of time. When all locations are ready, the home team will start the race. This window will close automatically and the countdown will begin. Page 8
If you wish to be dropped from the race, click on Cancel. This window also displays a list of ergs at your location that are in motion. It also displays the status of the other computers. Any computer that is not ready or has ergs that are in motion will appear in the list on the right. The race cannot begin until all locations are ready and not in motion. Start Window (home computer) This window is displayed automatically at the beginning of an Internet race. It is used to synchronize the computers so that they can start the race together. It s also used to let the rowers know when to start rowing. This window is only displayed on the home computer. The home computer is the first computer specified in the list of computers in the race administration web page. The race administrator ultimately determines the home computer. This window will close automatically and the countdown will begin. If you wish to cancel the race, click on Cancel. This window also displays a list of ergs at your computer that are in motion. It also displays the status of the other computers. Any computer that is not ready or has ergs that are in motion will appear in the list on the right. The race cannot begin until all computers are ready and not in motion. Page 9
