2. Click on the Launch button and select Terminal. A window will appear which looks like:

1 1. Log-in to one of the lab computers. If given a choice, select Gnome/Java Desktop (JDS) as your window manager. Don't select the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). You should then see something like the image below. Don't worry if yours looks slightly different (particularly the icons or the placement of the toolbar). 2. Click on the Launch button and select Terminal. A window will appear which looks like: 3. Type ls in the terminal. You should see something like this. The ls commands lists the files and directories. In particular, you will want to pay attention to the share and the cs155 directories. The priv directory will also be explained in class.

2 4. You will submit many of your assignments by putting them into the cs155 directory. Let's get started on HW0 so you can see how it works. 5. Type cd cs155 in the terminal window. The cd command changes directories. It moves you to a different place in the directory heirarchy. In this case, you are changing into (navigating to) a directory named cs Type ls. You won't see anything, because you haven't put anything into the cs155 directory yet. 7. Type mkdir hw0. The command mkdir makes a new directory. You should keep your files neatly organized by making a new directory for each assignment. Type ls again, and you should see the new directory. You now have a place to store your HW0 files. Your cs155 directory and all its subdirectories are only accessible to you, the instructor, and the class TA. You will need to place files in this directory for grading. The TA or instructor will also leave you comments on your assignment in this directory.

3 Now, let's get started on making an image in GIMP. Gimp stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program, and is a free, open-source competitor to Photoshop. You're free to download a copy for yourself (see the course website) or free to use your own software to complete this assignment. However, your files must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines above. 1. Select Launch Applications Graphics Image Editor. This will launch GIMP. You will need to complete the installation process which will create directories for GIMP to use in your home directory. You may use the default settings. 2. You will see something like the image below. You can safely dismiss the window titled Gimp Tip of the Day. The main window of Gimp is the middle window pictured below. The other window is for tool manipulation and can be ignored for now. 3. In the main window, select File Open and open your picture. You will now see something like: 4. Now, we're going to make a cropped picture which includes just us, and we want it to be 300x300 pixels. Select the crop tool. It's the one which looks like a small scalpel in the main GIMP window.

4 5. On your picture, click and drag to draw a square. You will see guidelines appear on your picture and a popup window with pixel dimensions will appear. 6. In the popup window (titled Crop and Resize ) change the width and height values to 300. The square over your picture will automatically resize. The area that is inside that square will be all that is retained when you crop your image. You may find this is the perfect size for your picture. (If you started with a very large original picture, you may find that the 300x300 square is too small and your face does not fit in it. If this is the case, click cancel on the Crop and Resize dialog. Then go to Image Scale Image. Instead of px in the dropdown menu, select %. Enter 50 in the New Width box and hit Enter. Then click the OK button. This will rescale your image to 50% of it's original size. Then reselect the crop tool and continue as before.) 7. Now you need to center that 300x300 area over your face. If you hover over the small boxes in the corner of the square, you will notice that the lower left and upper right corner have a small 4-directional arrow which appears when you hover over the solid squares in the corners. This means that you can grab those two corners to move the 300x300 pixel square around. Recenter the square to include just your face by clicking and dragging one of those two corners. 8. Click the Crop button in the Crop and Resize dialog. Your new headshot will appear.

5 9. Click File Save As. Navigate to the cs155/hw0 directory you created earlier. Save the file according to the naming conventions specified in the assignment. Gimp is smart enough to figure out what type of file you want to save based on the extension. When you save a jpg file, you can accept the defaults. 10. If you want to check, you can change into the hw0 directory and type ls. You should see your jpg file there.
