6 2.0 Introduction The information given in this document is based on hardware, BIOS and software used during WN internal test and may change with new releases of BIOS and drivers. This description is intended only for skilled personnel. Accordingly, pre-requisite to using this description is the adequate technical expertise in software and hardware configuration in the POS field. 3.0 Contents of DOWNLOAD.ZIP.\UPDATE.DOS\*.* Update files for MS-DOS 6.22.\UPDATE.WIN\*.* Update files for Windows.\CRISIS.DOS\*.* Crisis recovery files for MS-DOS 6.22 If following BIOS updates crashes, then recover previous (this) BIOS release by CRISIS boot. Note! All files need to be copied to boot media root folder! README.PDF 4.0 General Remarks This information This is a new international BEETLE motherboard BIOS release. Since now, BEETLE systems from production line will contain this release. The BIOS is suited to run on WN motherboards type "WN G41 STD and also on later releases. 4.1 Features / improvements / highlights There is the new AMI BIOS core included instead of Wincor-Nixdorf traditional Phoenix BIOS. Therefore, lots of BIOS SETUP menus are different to previous WN mainboards. There are new onboard legacy COM (RS232) ports available. These COM5/COM6 ports are disabled by BIOS SETUP per default and can be enabled by user! BIOS resources for these onboard COM ports (RS232) changed from previous BIOS version to this current one. If you install this BIOS and boot up an previously installed operating system, you find new COM ports with different port numbers. See COM port enumeration chapter for solution New video BIOS core from Intel implemented. It solves sporadic problems concerning high interrupt load without any according activity, which caused USB ports to be disabled. We could see such behaviour in our labs, running Linux (WNLPOS). BIOS update procedure does not fit on floppy disk (like previous packages did). You must prepare a USB flash stick with MS-DOS 6.22 before. 4.2 Common problems or restrictions We tested the update files with MS-DOS 6.22! For other DOS derivates, proper function is not guaranteed! If you want to enter the BIOS SETUP by USB keyboard keystroke F2 please wait until NUM LED on such keyboard is working, next press F2. All keystrokes before get lost, even if the SETUP option is already offered on screen. It has to be done this way, because the onboard USB host is not initialized before. If you need to exchange the mainboard battery, the keys you have to press at first boot up afterwards are different to previous WN mainboards. It was F2 key to enter BIOS SETUP and F1 to set defaults and continue. Now it is F1 to enter SETUP and F2 to set defaults. Due to the new AMI BIOS core, this traditional WN feature completely disable the power button (FOLLLOW AC POWER) is NOT implemented anymore! Wincor Nixdorf International GmbH 2

7 5.0 Installation Procedure 1) Copy *DOS\*.* to a MS-DOS bootable USB flash stick and start autoexec 2) Copy all files from WIN\*.* to Windows disk and run batch. There is no need to run from boot media root folder! 5.1 Windows based BIOS update procedure If you update the BIOS on a BEETLE platform ensure to start update from appropriate WN released BIOS version or later. The AFUWIN update procedure looks for valid BIOS identifiers and will not run if they are not found a security feature! BIOS update can be performed with this package under Windows XP and Windows 7. Ensure that you have administrative rights. 6.0 Crisis disk for BIOS recovery If there is a power fail or any other error - during flash programming of actual BIOS version which causes a not bootable mainboard, use the CRISIS files to recover to previous BIOS version. These files are found in the related DOWNLOAD.ZIP file for the previous BIOS release of same motherboard! It s always good practise to check the availability of such CRISIS files and a bootable media for the existing, previous BIOS version you want to update, before start the update procedure to a newer version! The crisis detection of mainboard BIOS includes search for external USB floppy disk and USB flash sticks! Note! Running the CRISIS Recovery disk will reset parameters! The BIOS DMI data and also the UUID will be lost. To initialize a new UUID, use standard BIOS update files. DMI data can be recovered by WN technicans. The CRISIS disk is made for recovery purpose only! It should never be used for BIOS update from different releases. This would cause total malfunction, BEETLE may not start up anymore. 7.0 Windows Enumeration of COM ports The BIOS SETUP allows G41 mainboard users to enable / disable onboard COM ports 5 & 6. If this enabling is done after additional COM ports (e.g. WN PCI COM card) were already installed, these ports may not have the expected COM port number! The worst case is, if such a card was present, driver installed once and PCI COM card was removed afterwards. You will not find COM5 / COM6 at all. Since the operating systems COM port enumerator already ran and reserved COM port numbers for (possibly non present ) COM hardware, you may find COM ports with unexpected port numbers.
