CR3 & CR4 hardware appliances don t support V8 See for more info Concerns about hardware appliance manufacturer can t be made in China On-Demand deployment Use standard hypervisor features likes suspend / resume and snapshot 45

Virtual HMC Appliance - Overview Hardware Supported Software licensing (SWMA) for the virtual appliance HMC hardware appliance uses MCRSA vsphere 5.5 Requirements X86 64 Bit Hypervisor VMware ESXi 5.5 RHEL 6.4 Hardware Virtualization VT-x AMD-V Support document for ordering and download: How does the price compare? Prices vary significantly from region to region, as do discounts, so for this comparison I ll use my local currency GBP and IBM s Recommended Retail Price (RRP). Comparing a traditional HMC and virtual HMC with budget price based on RRP, the vhmc is approximately 50-70% less. 46

vhmc Overview Entitlement per installation - x86 or vhmc on Power vhmc is 50 70% cheaper than hardware appliance! 47

Basic requirements - Installing the HMC virtual appliance The HMC virtual appliance can be installed in your existing x86 virtualized infrastructure. Supports the following virtualization hypervisors: Kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) Vmware Xen hypervisor (new with V8.850) Minimum requirements for running the HMC virtual appliance: 8 GB of memory (recommended: 16 GB or more i.e. the CR9 can go to 192 GB) 4 processors 1 network interface (maximum of 4 allowed) 160 GB of disk space (recommended: 500 GB) The HMC virtual appliance can be used to manage any of the systems that are supported by the version 8 HMC, which includes Power Systems servers with IBM POWER6, POWER7, and POWER8 processors. Installing the HMC virtual appliance on x86 Learn how to install the Hardware Management Console (HMC) virtual appliance on a x86 environment. Installing the HMC virtual appliance on POWER new with V Learn how to install the Hardware Management Console (HMC) virtual appliance on a virtualized POWER environment. Using the Activation Engine for the HMC virtual appliance Learn how to use the Activation Engine for the Hardware Management Console (HMC) virtual appliance. 48

vhmc on POWER8 Entitlement for Product ID 5765-HMA needed Download the vhmc for PowerVM from Entitled Systems Support (ESS) site with product id 5765-HMA. You will find the install instructions here Requires HMC V8.870 using format ppc64 Requires VIOS ( is recommended) to virtualize storage and network I suggest using vfc SAN storage if possible or if using vscsi on SAN give this a hdisk (this allows for flashcopy) Min requirements: 8GB RAM Memory 4 Virtual Processors 2 Network Adapters (Max of 4 allowed) 500 GB of disk space The vhmc cannot manage the system it is running on Call home of serviceable events with a failing MTMS of the HMC itself is disabled. 49

Virtual HMC Activation Engine Prepare activation engine xml file Copy activation engine xml file to an ext2 formatted disk file. Bind the formatted disk file to the virtual floppy disk of the virtual machine. Start the virtual machine. Steps for VMXNET3 on VMWare Hypervisor Requirements X86 64 Bit Hypervisor VMware ESXi 5.5 RHEL 6.4 Hardware Virtualization VT-x AMD-V XML vhm C vhm C vhm C vsphere 5.5 Create virtual floppy. Format virtual floppy using Ext2 format. Prepare Activation Engine XML Configuration file. Copy XML file into the virtual floppy. Extract vhmc from Pre-Packaged vhmc tar file. Configure virtual floppy with vhmc VM image Configure vhmc with at least the minimum requirements. Use preferred Hypervisor. Define vhmc Instance within the Hypervisor. Start vhmc VM Activation Engine will configure vhmc based on the XML parameters in the virtual floppy. 50

Create automated vhmc installation image (optional) To create an automated HMC installation image, complete the following steps: 1. Create two directories by running the following commands: mkdir -p oldiso and mkdir -p newiso. 2. Mount the HMC installation image to the oldiso directory by running the following command: sudo mount -o loop <image_path> oldiso. 3. Copy the contents of the oldiso directory to the newiso directory by running the following command: cp -r oldiso/* newiso. 4. Edit the Grub file for the automated install by running the following command: sed -i 's/biosdevname=0/biosdevname=0 mode=auto optype=install/' newiso/boot/grub/grub.cfg. 5. Make the Grub file read-only by running the following command: sudo chown 0444 newiso/boot/grub/grub.cfg. 6. Create a new HMC installation ISO by running the following command: mkisofs -o <new_iso_name> -V <ISO label> -f -r -T -udf --allow-limited-size --netatalk -chrp-boot -iso-level 4 -part -no-desktop -quiet newiso (where ISO label must be HMC-<hmc version release number>, 7.for example HMC ). 51

HMC Software appliance - vhmc on PowerVM: Some important notes on the vhmc on PowerVM : 1. vhmc on PowerVM doesn t provide support a graphics. Once installed and activated you can enable remote access and use a supported browser for accessing the UI. 2. DLPAR operations such as processor/memory add/remove for vhmcs running as a LPAR are not supported, i.e., you can t dynamically modify the resources allocated to the LPAR hosting the vhmc itself, but the vhmc can perform all DLPAR actions on the systems and LPARs it is managing. 3. You can use inactive partition migration or Simplified Remote Restart to move the vhmc Software appliance to another server 4. vhmc on PowerVM requires a POWER8 server with Little Endian support, fw830 or later, but system firmware 860 is recommended. 5. Can not assign physical resources to vhmc 52

Create the LPAR option using an existing HMC: Start with the very basic Create Partition this creates a basic profile will require further configu 53

Use the partition profile to complete the vhmc configuration the old way Note: these can not be changed using DLPAR Processor recommended 1 CPU desired with 4 vcpu Memory 16GB, recommended 32GB Storage 500GB (vscsi or NPIV) Network VLAN configuration, up to 4 54

Complete HMC LPAR configuration the old way - using Enhanced+ Double click DLPAR operation are performed through the properties task 55

Use a template would be another option I m using an existing vhmc 58

This must be a POWER8 at fw830 or later for LE support NOTE: If using IFLs, the HMC is a Linux Partition >>

No Physical I/O is allowed for vhmc, also no vnic From the Template If using SAN storage and vscsi, I suggest mapping an hdisk. This would allow for snap shots or flashcopy

Create Virtual IO Server A Virtual I/O Server partition can be created using, 1. System template Deploy System Template can be used to configure the system, create VIOS partitions specified in the system template, configure SRIOV, Physical I/O, Network Storage etc. and install the VIOS. Note: When system template deploy is being used, it would initialize the system (i.e., delete all the partitions on the system) first and then performs above mentioned configuration. Or 2. Create Virtual I/O Server wizard. Add/create new VIOS Partitions as needed by using this option outside of the System Template Deploy. Create the VIOS partition and apply the configuration or proceed with installation of OS after the creation 88 88

Create & Activate Partitions

Partition Templates How to Create Partition Templates? HMC provides Canned/Starter Templates (cannot be edited/deleted) Existing partition configuration can be captured as user defined template Starter templates can be copied and user defined templates can be created. Actions with partition templates View the Templates details Edit the partition templates to customize the resources allocated to a partition. For example, you can customize the partition template to be used for a particular workload or operating system type. You can change configurations like general settings, processor & memory, Virtual Network, Virtual Storage, Physical IO, Hardware Virtualized IO, Tagged IO. Copy a template and create a new one. For example, you can copy a starter template and create a new one to customize for the partition requirements Export the template which can later be imported on to another HMC. Deploy the template to create, configure and activate the partition. Delete the template

Create Partition using Templates Once template & managed system is selected, a validation of template against the selected managed system is performed (Validation for capabilities, available CPU/Memory etc.,) Logical Partition Configuration Summary Tab : Partition Id, Name, Shared Processor Pool Name Physical IO : Physical IO, HEA, SRIOV (Pre-selected Physical IO will be shown if Use Captured IO option is used) Network Configuration : Pre-selected Virtual Networks (Use Captured IO) or Available Virtual Networks Virtual NIC Configuration : Pre-selected Virtual NIC (Use Captured IO) or Available VNIC Virtual Storage Configuration : Virtual SCSI Physical Volumes and Shared Storage Pool Logical Units Virtual Fibre Channel IBM I Tagged IO Summary : Activate or Apply Configuration

Create Partition using Templates Virtual NIC

Create Partition using Templates Virtual Storage User needs to select only the storage or port to be assigned to the partition Deploy process creates the required client & server adapter pair and maps storage/fc port Selecting Assigned Physical Volumes option lists the Physical Volume which are already in use can be used when the same physical volume has to be shared across multiple partitions (Cluster or PowerHA or IBM DB2 Cluster Services) Edit Connections can be use to specify server adapter id or select redundancy

Create Partition using Templates - Summary Review the settings of the partition using the summary page before starting the create/activate process

Create Partition using Templates Activate/Apply Choose Create & Apply, if you want to create all the configuration and boot later. You can later activate the partition using the activate action under partition

Create Partition using Templates - Notes Create partition from template is a halt on first failure operation. After the partition template and managed system is selected, the wizard validates the configuration of partition template against the selected managed system. Validation might fail in case of, The capability selected in the template is not supported in the system Non-availability of the requested configuration. If any requested configuration is greater than available configurations. [Such as, requested memory, processor configuration is greater than the processor or memory available.] In case of failure, error message is shown and wizard waits for you to cancel the operation or navigate back to make the changes and re-attempt the operation. Not all attributes/options are editable as part of the create/deploy partition template wizard. A partition template can be edited to choose the required configuration before deploy

Activate Partition Choose activate with profile or current configuration Network boot supported for AIX/Linux Logical Partitions

2. Create Virtual I/O Server wizard. Add/create new VIOS Partitions as needed by using this option outside of the System Template Deploy. Create the VIOS partition and apply the configuration or proceed with installation of OS after the creation
