Windows has gone through many stages of development Windows 1.0 was released in 1985
Since then there has been (to name a few): Windows 1.0, Windows 2.0, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Some have been better than others!!
USB Mouse, keyboard, general accessories (USB 1, 2 and 3). HDMI Connection to a TV VGA Connection to a TV, monitor or projector Network Connection to a network or router
Audio Audio in (microphone), audio out (headset) and mini-speakers (not shown).
A typical computer will have a number of storage devices (also known as drives), eg: Hard Disk drive (main storage area) DVD / CD drive SD Card Reader (for transferring files from SD cards (from cameras, phones, tablets, etc) One or more USB slots for: Memory sticks Cables for transferring data to or from your phone or tablet An external hard disk
The touchpad is convenient......but a mouse gives you better control......and more options Use a wireless mouse if you don t want wires
You can configure the screen to suit your eyesight You can also connect to the TV or a projector Demo
Think of your computer as: An office or study......connected to A huge warehouse of films, games, music, etc When you want to watch a film, for example, you send someone out to the warehouse to fetch the film and the player to your study You watch the film in the comfort of your study When you have finished, you send the stuff back to the warehouse so your study/office stays tidy
Using this analogy, the warehouse is your main hard drive (non volatile)..
...and your office/study is your workspace memory (RAM, solid state memory, dynamic storage area, volatile storage, etc, etc)...
1 Bit 1 Byte = 8 Bits 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1024 Bytes 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1024 KB 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1024 MB 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1024 GB = TRUE or FALSE, ON or OFF, YES or NO, 0 or 1 = A single character, or a number = 230 words, or half a page of text = 500 pages of text, 1 minute of (MP3) music, a 2 megapixel photo = 1,500 books, 200 music tracks (12 CDs), a 2½ hour film (MP4), 350 highres photos = 1½ million books, 12,000 CDs, 1,000 full-length films, 350,000 high-res photos A new laptop will typically come with half a Terabyte of hard-disk storage, and 4GB of dynamic memory.

You send out for a film...say Bridget Jones
Off goes the file manager
He finds the film
Then he goes to another part of the warehouse where the applications are stored he picks out the appropriate too for the job, and brings both to your study
The file manager knows which application to use by the file ending. For example: File Ending Type of File Associated Application.jpg A compressed image Image viewer.mp3 Compressed audio Music player.mp4 Compressed video Video player.txt Text Text editor.doc, docx Document Microsoft Word.xls, xlsx Spreadsheet Microsoft Excel.pdf PDF document PDF reader (Adobe).zip An archived file Winzip.html Web page Web browser.exe An application NA
You can see a list of these file endings..... and you can change which application opens each type of file (but be careful!): (See Control Panel/Folder Options)
Shortcut keys: CTRL-A, CTRL-C, CTRL-V, CTRL-X, CTRL-Z, WIN, WIN-D, SHIFT-PRTSC, ALT-PRTSC Right click menus Use of DESKTOP: Where to find programs on your computer Shortcuts Taskbar Recent documents Control Panel
Accessible from Programs, My Documents, My Computer. My Network Places Allows you to manage the files on your computer (copy, move, delete, rename files, etc) Allows you to search for files Use it to transfer files to remote computers Create new drives See different views (list, thumbnails, details and file attributes) Sort files (Tip: Use date format to order in date order)
Simply drag and drop or use a backup application Use an external hard disk Back up to another computer Use a memory stick Use an SD card Use a DVD or CD (demo) Use the Cloud (eg. Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, Dropbox (for photos) )
Use Malwarebytes to remove malware Use of CCleaner and Registry cleaner and uninstall Defrag and Cleanup Useful free utilities: FreeOffice Irfanview Posterazor Audacity
