Chapter 1 : Deploy Folder Redirection with Offline Files Microsoft Docs From your description, it sounds as if you cannot access the redirection path in Windows Explorer, is that correct? before folder redirection works successfully, the target path must be reachable from the computer with the user credentials. Before I get into how to redirect the data, I am going to discuss the two main reasons that people may choose to move their user data to another location. One of the biggest reasons I have seen people choose to redirect their user data for is to protect their data in the event of hard drive failure or operating system corruption. The other major reason is because of data storage concerns resulting from lack of space on the hard drive. For example, on my desktop and laptop computers I use solid state drives SSDs as the boot drive where the operating system is installed. Because the storage capacities of SSDs have not caught up to standard hard drives capacities yet and because the price for the larger capacity SSDs is too expensive, I choose to use my SSDs as my boot drive where the operating system is installed. SSDs provide faster boot and response times. I use my SSDs as the installation location for some of my games as those games need the faster response times an SSD is capable of. As such, I used the method I am going to describe below to redirect most of the folders from my user profile to a different hard drive. This has the added bonus of helping protect me from losing my data if the SSDs have issues or if the operating system gets corrupted. When redirecting user profile folders, the folders can be redirected to a server location or to another location on the same computer. Redirecting user profiles folders cannot be done for the entire user profile folder. The majority of the folders within the profile can be redirected to the new location but each folder within the user profile has to be done separately. Some third-party applications will add folders to the user profile folder. From what I have seen so far, these folders usually cannot be moved to the new location. Other users, even administrator accounts, are unable to move folders other than their own profiles. System created profiles such as the Public profile cannot have their folders relocated. Depending on how much data is in the user profile folder being moved, the process can either be quick or it may take as long time if there is a lot of data in the folder. My recommendation is to redirect the folders within the user profile immediately after creating the user account or immediately after installing Windows but before copying user data back into the folders so that the time needed can be minimized. Redirecting Folders Within a User Profile to a New Location To redirect or move the folders in the user profile folder, please use the following steps: Open File Explorer using the icon in the taskbar as shown below. Double-click on the Users Folder. Double-click on the user account that that will have its folders redirected. After double-clicking the user account, another set of folders will open in the next screen. These are the folders we will be moving. There might be folders that cannot be moved but that depends on what folders are in the folder. Right-click on one of the folders and click on Properties. If the folder can be moved, there will be a tab called Location. If there is not a Location tab, you will need to try the next folder in the list. Click on the Location tab to show the window in the image below. In the image above, the current folder location is listed as C: Beneath that path are 3 buttons. The first button will restore the default path from another location back to the system default location on the C: The Find Target button will load a File Explorer window showing the location using the folder path in the text field above it. We want the Move button in this case as we will be moving the folder to a new location. Click on the Move button and a File Explorer window will open. After File Explorer is open, browse to the location where the folder from the user profile will be moved. In this case, I am going to use D: After creating the folder, click on the Select Folder button in the window. After selecting the folder location, the Properties window should show the new path such as the path in the image below. Click on Apply to perform the move of the folder and the data in it. After clicking Apply, the following window will appear. Click on the Yes button to allow all of the files from the old location to be moved to the new location. Click the OK button to close the Properties window. To move the remaining folders to the new location, repeat steps 5 â 11 above. Restoring Folders back to the Default Location To restore folders back to the original location, go to the new location and right-click on the folder to get to the Properties as we did above to move them initially. Instead of clicking on the Move button, click on Restore Page 1

Default and a window like in step 10 above will appear. Click on the Yes button again to restore the folder to its original location. Again, this process has to be done for each folder that was moved. Moving or redirecting folders within the user profile can be a life saver if the boot drive fails or the operating system becomes corrupted. Moving user data like this is not a replacement for backing up data but it can help in protecting the data from being lost because of boot drive or operating system problems. As always, I hope this information helps. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to post them below or me using the link in my bio. 3 Chapter 2 : How to redirect 'My Documents' Windows How to redirect 'My Documents' Windows 7. Your user folder should be a mapped network drive inside racedaydvl.com that you have a U: drive inside Computer, it will be among your mapped network drives. The server admins configure an http to https redirect. Today I will be discussing few ways of doing this. I will keep updating this document as I find more ways to do so. Here is the structuring of the Web Site: There are few articles out there on this. Here are few to list: As specified in the above links add the below section in the web. You can find the complete list of IIS Server variables here: If the request is being handled on the secure port, then this is 1. Otherwise, it is 0. Due to inheritance, the rule will cause the requests to end up in infinite loop calling itself repeatedly. Alternatively you could use the port numbers in the above code to achieve the same ensure to change the port numbers as per the website configuration. Here is how we do it: Launch the IIS Manager. Fill the details as per the requirement as shown below: This may not be ideal for all the scenarios as the user is redirected to a specified URL. Due to inheritance, the requests will end up in an endless loop, redirecting to itself repeatedly. It can be enforced at the application level. There is another way using custom error pages which has been documented here: Once I have tested I will add it up here. Page 3

Chapter 3 : Folder Redirection â Part 4: Group Policy configuration â 4sysops Hello, We are running a Windows Server enviorment with local user policies and folder redirection. All of the XP machines work fine but the Windows 7 machines do not apply the folder redirection policies completely. Always Offline mode New Provides faster access to files and lower bandwidth usage by always working offline, even when connected through a high-speed network connection. Always Offline mode Starting with Windows 8 and Windows Server, administrators can configure the experience for users of Offline Files to always work offline, even when they are connected through a high-speed network connection. Windows updates files in the Offline Files cache by synchronizing hourly in the background, by default. What value does Always Offline mode add? The Always Offline mode provides the following benefits: Users experience faster access to files in redirected folders, such as the Documents folder. Network bandwidth is reduced, decreasing costs on expensive WAN connections or metered connections such as a 4G mobile network. How has Always Offline mode changed things? Prior to Windows 8, Windows Server, users would transition between the Online and Offline modes, depending on network availability and conditions, even when the Slow-Link mode also known as the Slow Connection mode was enabled and set to a 1 millisecond latency threshold. With Always Offline mode, computers never transition to Online mode when the Configure slow-link mode Group Policy setting is configured and the Latency threshold parameter is set to 1 millisecond. Changes are synced in the background every minutes, by default, but synchronization is configurable by using the Configure Background Sync Group Policy setting. Note Metered network connections usually have round-trip network latencies that are slower than the default 35 millisecond latency value for transitioning to Offline Slow Connection mode in Windows 8, Windows Server, and Windows Server Therefore, these connections usually transition to Offline Slow Connection mode automatically. What value does cost-aware synchronization add? How has cost-aware synchronization changed things? Prior to Windows 8 and Windows Server, users who wanted to minimize fees while using Offline Files on metered network connections had to track their data usage by using tools from the mobile network provider. The users could then manually switch to Offline mode when they were roaming, near their bandwidth limit, or over their limit. With cost-aware sync, Windows automatically tracks roaming and bandwidth usage limits while on metered connections. When the user is roaming, near their bandwidth limit, or over their limit, Windows switches to Offline mode and prevents all synchronization. Users can still manually initiate synchronization, and administrators can override cost-aware synchronization for specific users, such as executives. Primary computers for Folder Redirection and Roaming User Profiles You can now designate a set of computers, known as primary computers, for each domain user, which enables you to control which computers use Folder Redirection, Roaming User Profiles, or both. Designating primary computers is a simple and powerful method to associate user data and settings with particular computers or devices, simplify administrator oversight, improve data security, and help protect user profiles from corruption. What value do primary computers add? There are four major benefits to designating primary computers for users: The administrator can specify which computers users can use to access their redirected data and settings. Designating primary computers reduces the security and privacy risk of leaving residual personal or corporate data on computers where the user has logged on. Primary computers enable the administrator to mitigate the risk of an improperly configured or otherwise corrupt profile, which could result from roaming between differently configured systems, such as between xbased and xbased computers. Sign-out times are also reduced, because changes to the user profile do not need to be uploaded to the file share. How have primary computers changed things? To limit downloading private user data to primary computers, the Folder Redirection and Roaming User Profiles technologies perform the following logic checks when a user signs in to a computer: If it does, Windows determines if the computer that the user is logging on to is designated as a primary computer for the user as follows: Windows also removes any existing redirected folders according to the removal action that was specified by the previously applied Group Policy setting, which is retained in the local Folder Redirection configuration. Software requirements To designate primary computers, your environment must meet the following requirements: Client computers Page 4

must run Windows 10, Windows 8. More information For additional related information, see the following resources. Page 5

Chapter 4 : Folder Redirection, Offline Files, and Roaming User Profiles overview Microsoft Docs Thanks to a tip off from fellow MVP Darren Mar-Elia about fairly common issues with Folder Redirection in Windows 7. In short there is a pretty significant issue in Folder Redirection if configured incorrectly that could result in a loss of data for users. However, before you try to stop Folder Redirection, you must first enable the Redirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when policy is removed Group Policy setting. Important After you modify a GPO and enable the Redirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when policy is removed Group Policy setting, all users who you want to stop Folder Redirection must log off and then log on again. To stop Folder Redirection, follow these steps: Enable the Redirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when policy is removed Group Policy setting. To do this, follow these steps: In the Active Directory Users and Computers console tree, locate the site, domain, or organizational unit that contains the users who you want to apply the updated GPO to. Right-click the object, such as the organizational unit, and then click Properties. Click the Group Policy tab. Right-click Application Data, and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab. In the Policy Removal box, click to select the Redirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when policy is removed policy setting, and then click OK. Close the Group Policy dialog box, and then close the Properties dialog box for the object that you selected in step c. Important All users who are affected by your GPO modification must log off and back on to any computers where they have logged on before the changes are applied. When all users have logged off and then logged back on, and the updated GPO for Folder Redirection has been applied, use one of the following methods to stop Folder Redirection: Remove the user from the organizational unit where the folder redirection GPO is applied to a different organizational unit that does not redirect folders. Important Move the user accounts, do not delete the GPO. Click Users, Contacts, and Groups in the Find box. Type the name of the user account, and then click Find Now. In the Search results box, right-click the user account, and then click Move. In the Container to move object to box, locate a security group that does not have Folder Redirection policy enabled, and then click OK. In the Active Directory Users and Computers console tree, right-click the organizational unit object or domain object that has the Group Policy Object whose security properties that you want to change, and then click Properties. In the Properties dialog box for the object, click the Group Policy tab, select the GPO that you want to change from the list, and then click Properties. In the GPO Properties dialog box, click the Security tab, and then change the permissions so that only the required users have the Read and Apply Group Policy permissions. Click OK two times. After you use one of these methods, Folder Redirection will be stopped the next time that the user processes this GPO. To force an update, you must follow these additional steps: Create or modify a GPO that applies to the computers on which users who are affected by folder redirection policies log on. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates. Under Administrative Templates, expand System. Under System, select Group Policy. Double-click the Folder Redirection policy processing setting Select the Enabled option, and then click to select the second check box. Process even if the Group Policy objects have not changed. Exit the Group Policy Object Editor. Make sure that this new GPO applies to computer accounts for which users are using folder redirection. After you apply this policy change, the computers can detect the updated folder redirection policy and will honor the changes that have been made to stop using folder redirection. Group Policy settings are changed only when a new or modified GPO is applied to the user or computer. For additional information about Folder Redirection, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. 7 Chapter 5 : Windows 7: Redirect folder from PowerShell? - Super User The Windows operating system checks the new Group Policy settings (Download roaming profiles on primary computers only and Redirect folders on primary computers only) to determine if the msds-primary-computer attribute in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) should influence the decision to roam the user's profile or apply Folder Redirection. Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8. For a list of recent changes to this topic, see Change history. Important Due to the security changes made in MS, we updated Step 3: Software requirements Folder Redirection has the following software requirements: To administer Folder Redirection, you must be signed in as a member of the Domain Administrators security group, the Enterprise Administrators security group, or the Group Policy Creator Owners security group. Client computers must run Windows 10, Windows 8. A file server must be available to host redirected folders. If the file share uses DFS Namespaces, the DFS folders links must have a single target to prevent users from making conflicting edits on different servers. If the file share uses DFS Replication to replicate the contents with another server, users must be able to access only the source server to prevent users from making conflicting edits on different servers. When using a clustered file share, disable continuous availability on the file share to avoid performance issues with Folder Redirection and Offline Files. Note Some newer features in Folder Redirection have additional client computer and Active Directory schema requirements. Create a folder redirection security group If your environment is not already set up with Folder Redirection, the first step is to create a security group that contains all users to which you want to apply Folder Redirection policy settings. Active Directory Administration Center appears. Right-click the appropriate domain or OU, select New, and then select Group. In the Create Group window, in the Group section, specify the following settings: In Group name, type the name of the security group, for example: In Group scope, select Security, and then select Global. In the Members section, select Add. Type the names of the users or groups to which you want to deploy Folder Redirection, select OK, and then select OK again. Create a file share for redirected folders If you do not already have a file share for redirected folders, use the following procedure to create a file share on a server running Windows Server Note Some functionality might differ or be unavailable if you create the file share on a server running another version of Windows Server. In the Shares tile, select Tasks, and then select New Share. The New Share Wizard appears. On the Share Location page, select the server and volume on which you want to create the share. This will hide the share from casual browsers. On the Other Settings page, clear the Enable continuous availability checkbox, if present, and optionally select the Enable access-based enumeration and Encrypt data access checkboxes. On the Permissions page, select Customize permissionsâ. The Advanced Security Settings dialog box appears. Select Disable inheritance, and then select Convert inherited permissions into explicit permission on this object. Set the permissions as described Table 1 and shown in Figure 1, removing permissions for unlisted groups and accounts, and adding special permissions to the Folder Redirection Users group that you created in Step 1. If you chose the SMB Share - Advanced profile, on the Quota page, optionally select a quota to apply to users of the share. On the Confirmation page, select Create. Required permissions for the file share hosting redirected folders User Account. Page 7

Sign in to vote I have a question. Sorry if this is not completely clear. Hopefully this helps someone. Here was my experience. I had users begin complaining that offline files was not working. Realizing that I had made some changes to OU structure and group policy shortly before this issue cropped up. The R2 domain is not fully in production yet, still a test environment I finally realized that through security filtering I had accidentally removed the documents redirection policy. Luckily the policy was set to the defaults which left their documents redirected to the same location, however, some of their offline file caches became corrupt and all of them no longer had their My Documents marked as Always Available Offline. The configuration was as follows. Security Filtering The settings in this GPO can only apply to the following groups, users, and computers: Follow the Documents folder Pictures Setting: Follow the Documents folder Videos Setting: Follow the Documents folder Then I proceeded to bang my head for a couple of weeks performing numerous Google searches most of which landed me in the technet forums. I just finished troubleshooting this about 30 minutes ago. Any time I had the document redirection policy targeting them home folder and changes occured. Either the policy being removed or the home folder path of the user being changed. The offline file cache in Windows 7 seems to have become corrupted. I was able to reproduce this over and over again. I changed my policy from Target folder location: This no longer caused offline file cache corruption or the My Documents folder to fail being redirected. So hopefully it all continues to work when I make those changes. Unfortunately I have not seen this stated anywhere on the Interwebs. What a headache it caused Wednesday, December 22, Chapter 7 : How to Redirect Your Personal Folders in Windows 7 How to verify DNS for redirect in Windows 7.
