Introduction 1.1 About the document The describes the prerequisites and steps to upgrade the Honeywell qualified RSSM firmware for IBM/Lenovo Blade Center Sever Premium Virtualization Server platform. The latest version of this SCN is always available on the Honeywell Process Solutions website. 1.2 Software Upgrade This update from Lenovo to the existing version of the RSSM firmware and offers improvements for the Experion Virtualization Premium Platform based on the IBM / Lenovo BCS hardware. Problems resolved The BCS Chassis that is running on older version of RSSM firmware is unable to detect the newly replaced DSM hard drive. The RSSM firmware upgrade package includes the SAS RAID Controller Module, Drive Storage Module, Battery Backup Module, and hard drive firmware. When a new DSM hard drive is replaced in the BCS Chassis it is important to Upgrade the latest RSSM firmware so that newly added hard drive firmware is updated Known Issues NA Limitations Patch distribution [ ] Not Limited [ ] Limited for: Cumulative patch [ ] Yes. 5 1.3 Before you begin Check system health Verify the health of the BC-S chassis and the ESXi hosts. BC-S Chassis health 1. From web browser connected to AMM of BC-S chassis. 2. Review the System Status and Event logs. 3. Resolve any issues found. 4. Contact Honeywell TAC if needed. ESXi hosts health 1. Using vsphere Client in Host and Clusters View. 2. Select a host in the BC-S chassis. 3. Select the Alarms tab. Resolve any alarms reported. 4. Select the Tasks & Events tab. 5. Review the Tasks & Events for any failures 6. Select the Virtual Machines tab. 7. Verify the host is managing the desired Virtual machines. 8. Repeat steps 3 7 for all hosts in this BC-S chassis. HA Cluster health 1. Using vsphere Client in Host and Clusters View. 2. Select a HA cluster in the BC-S chassis. 3. Select the Summary tab and verify the following: a. vsphere HA is: ON b. Admission Control is: Enabled c. Configured CPU and Memory Failover is 50% d. Host Monitoring: Enabled e. VM Monitoring and Application Monitoring: Disabled f. There are no Configuration issues 5

6 2. Background This SCN provides guidance for upgrading firmware on the Honeywell Premium BC-S platform. The guidance supports upgrading the BC-S DSM6 and DSM12 systems using the Honeywell approved latest available firmware from Lenovo image. The guidance also includes installing the Honeywell approved Lenovo RSSM firmware. 3. Create an Upgrade Plan This upgrade process requires all virtual machines and ESXi hosts in the BC-S chassis to be shut down so that the RAID controller and all drive firmware can be upgraded. Plan to perform the upgrade when the virtual machines on the BC-S chassis can be shut down or moved to another ESXi host available on the other Chassis. Honeywell recommends that chassis be upgraded one at a time. 4. Pre-Conditions Support Client node exists on Management network. You have current backup of all virtual machines on all BC-S chassis to be upgraded. Backup of current configuration file for AMM and IFM. 6

7 5. Download software The following software should be downloaded at a node with appropriate access and stored in a convenient location. Java Runtime Java runtime is needed for the BC-S web interface to the AMM. At the time this document was generated Java runtime could be downloaded from the following link. JRE 6.0 update 10 is the minimum version supported. This document was developed using jre-6u29- windows-i586-s Python version Python is a scripting environment used for deploying RAID Controller Firmware updates and for configuring the Storage subsystem. Honeywell recommends using version Python is available from the following site: Use the scroll bar to find this version. Putty A telnet session to the BC-S Chassis AMM, or RAID controllers can be accomplished with the Windows telnet client or from a third party tool like Putty. Putty also supports SSH connections and an SSH connection to the VMware Hypervisor is needed. Honeywell recommends using Release 0.63 Putty is available from the following link. Experion Premium Platform Upgrade Package Contact TAC to obtain and download the Honeywell approved upgrade package. 7

8 6. Prepare the Support Client Node 6.1 Install Tools on the Support Client node. Java runtime (skip if already installed) 4. Copy the Java installable package to the client 5. Right mouse click on the install package and select run as Administrator. 6. Select Install on the Welcome display. 7. Select Close on the Successfully Installed display 8. Continue to the next tool. Python (skip if already installed) 1. Copy the Python installable package to the client. 2. Double click the.msi install package to launch the install. 3. Select Install for All users and click Next. 4. Accept the default install path c:\python27 by selecting Next on the Destination directory display. 5. Select Next on the Customize Python display to accept all features. 6. Click Finish to complete the process. 7. Configure the Windows Environment Variable Path to include Python27 a. Select Start b. Right Mouse Click Computer and select Properties c. Select Advanced System Settings d. On the Advanced tab select Environment Variables e. Find and select the Path variable in the User or System window. f. Select Edit g. Add the following text to the end of the Path variable. ;c:\python27 h. Select OK to close the Edit window i. Select OK to close the Environment Variables window j. Select OK to close the System Properties window. 8. The Path variable allows Python scripts to be run in their own directory so the Python environment is not corrupted. 9. Continue to the next tool. Putty (skip if already installed) 1. Copy the Putty executable to the client node. 2. Right-click putty.exe and pin it to the Start Menu so it is easily accessed when other windows are up. 3. Continue to the next task. 8

9 Extract contents of Honeywell upgrade package 1. Extract the package with folder structure to a location on the Support Client node. 6.2 Shutdown VMs and ESXi hosts VMs and associated hosts need to be shut down in order for RSSM firmware to be upgraded. Critical VMs that cannot be shutdown must be migrated to another ESXi host in a different chassis. Shutdown the Virtual Machines 1. Using vsphere client in the Host and Clusters view. 2. Select the target ESXi host. 3. Select the Virtual Machines Tab. 4. Shutdown the guest OS of the VM. Shutdown the ESXi Host 1. Using vsphere client in the Host and Clusters view. 2. Right click on the target ESXi Host. 3. Select Shut Down. 4. Select Yes to shutdown 6.3 Upgrade the RSSM firmware The RSSM firmware upgrade package includes the SAS RAID Controller Module, Drive Storage Module, Battery Backup Module, and hard drive firmware. Verify IP Address and status of RSSM 1. From the Client node verify that a ping is successful to both SAS switches and RAID controllers: For example: BCSC01 switches /29 and controllers /39 If ping fails, verify the IP address configuration of I/O module 3 and 4 is correct as seen from the AMM console Factory installed addresses for BCSC02 will be BCSC01 addresses Therefore, SAS Switch addresses are /49 and RAID controllers will be /59. Use Putty to open a telnet session to the RAID controller: for example: ( /39) Login: USERID Password: PASSW0RD (the 0 is a zero). Use site specific password if it has been changed. 2. Enter command: swversion 3. Record the following information that will be displayed. Name Package Build No Value 9

10 Prepare the Client node to perform the update 1. From the Client Node do the following: 2. Create the folder C:\RSSMUpdate Folder name must not have spaces 3. If the folder already exists then delete all content. Caution: The RSSMUpdate folder must be empty with only the following.txt and.bat files in it otherwise the upgrade will fail. 4. Copy the.txt and.bat files from RSSM firmware folder in support client node. 5. Open a CMD window running as administrator 6. Enter cd c:\rssmupdate Prepare the RAID controllers for the upgrade 1. Using Putty telnet connect to the RAID controller: IP address ,58, 78, 98, 2. Login to the controller: Login: USERID Password: PASSW0RD (the 0 is a zero). Use site specific password if it has been changed. 3. From the putty window enter the CLI command: list controller 4. Verify controller status is Primary/Secondary. 5. Enter the CLI command: alert get 6. Resolve any critical alerts before proceeding. Contact Honeywell TAC if unable to resolve any critical errors. 7. Before proceeding ensure that the command alert get gives no critical alerts. 8. Put the controllers in service mode with the following command: shutdown system state servicemode 9. This will cause the RAID controllers to reboot. 10. Restart putty session and log back in after the RAID controller reboots. 11. Enter the command: list controller 12. Verify status of both RAID controllers is Service. 10

11 Start the firmware upgrade 1. Perform the following from the Client node. 2. From the CMD window opened earlier execute the command to run the.bat file For example: lnvgy_fw_bcsw_s0cl _windows_noarch.bat i n f Where.bat file name is lnvgy_fw_bcsw_s0cl _windows_noarch.bat If custom passwords have been applied to the RAID controllers and SAS switches then the following syntax must be used. ibm_fw_bcsw_s0cl _windows_noarch.bat i n -f passwd {PW RAID CTLR} sas_p1 {PW SAS I/O Bay3} sas_p2 {PW SAS I/O bay 4} ftx_pwd {PW AMM} where: {PW RAID CTLR} = RAID CLI custom password {PW SAS I/O Bay3} = SAS I/O Bay 3 CLI custom password {PW SAS I/O Bay4} = SAS I/O Bay 4 CLI custom password {PW AMM} = AMM custom password 3. Press Enter 4. You should see text indicating that the package is unpacking. Process may take some time. Wait for the following completion notice: SUCCESSFUL Non-Concurrent Disk drive firmware update! If the upgrade fails remove the contents of the c:\rssmupdate folder and repeat the steps above starting with the section Prepare the Client node to perform the update Check RAID controller state and version 1. Reconnect Putty to the RAID controller 2. Verify controllers are in a Primary/Secondary status. Enter the command: list controller 3. Verify the firmware was applied. Enter the command: swversion 4. Package Build No should now match with the RSSM firmware version that has been applied. 5. Enter the command alert get to verify there are no critical alerts. 6. RSSM firmware update is complete. 11

12 Check AMM status From the AMM console on the Client node check the AMM status to make sure there are no error reported in I/O module 3 or I/O module Restart virtual machines 1. Using vsphere Client in Host and Clusters View 2. Select the host containing VMs to be started. 3. Select Virtual Machine tab. 4. Orphaned virtual machines can be resolved by moving them temporarily to another host and then back to the target. 5. Power On the required virtual machines. 12
